Musical is a Swashbuckling Success
Half Day School's musical, "Pirates," hit the stage this week, starring 115 talented students who have been rehearsing since spring break. The performance is a swashbuckling adventure filled with pirates, stowaways, and mates, brought to life in the photos featured here.
A big shoutout goes to the 23 students in our after-school set design club, whose props and backdrops truly transformed the stage. Thank you to our dedicated staff — Mrs. McLelland, Mrs. Richter, Sra. De La Paz, Sra. Barnabee, Mr. Turini, and Mrs. Smidt — for guiding and inspiring our young performers every step of the way!

5th-Grade Summer Reading
Over the summer, incoming sixth-grade students are being asked to read a book that they will discuss in class when they start at Daniel Wright in August. Please take a moment to review the summer reading lists created by the English Language Arts teachers.
Why does Summer Reading matter? Research shows that students who read consistently over the summer are stronger students during the school year. District 103 is committed to developing strong reading, writing, and thinking skills. We also recommend that students read a variety of material during the summer.
What's Your Family's Favorite Dessert?
At school we learn that culture can both make each of us unique and, at the same time, connect us to one another. While we often think of culture as country of origin, language, ancestry, etc., culture is also made up of all of the small routines and traditions that we practice. This week students examined one of these small bits of culture, dessert! Ask your child if they can find their dessert represented in our Half Day word cloud. (see photo to the left!)
We invite you to share a family photo enjoying your favorite dessert, and/or create a short (under 2 minutes) video talking as a family about how dessert relates to your culture. Send it to us at communications@d103.org!
Tick Season
With the warmer weather upon us, we want to alert you that tick season has arrived.
Please take a moment to:
- Check your child's clothing after outdoor activities.
- Conduct regular tick checks of your child's hair and skin.
- Common symptoms include redness, swelling, and a hard bump at the bite site.
- Consider appropriate insect repellent for outdoor play.
- If you find a tick, remove it promptly with tweezers, avoiding squeezing or twisting.
Thank you for your help in keeping our students healthy and tick-free!
Library Book Checkout
The last week students may check books out of the school library is the week of May 19. Books are due back to the library no later than Tuesday, May 27.
Register Now: Returning Students
Returning student registration is now open for grades early childhood through seventh.
- Please reach out to your child's school if you have questions about registration or email PowerSchool@d103.org.
- If your family is moving and not planning to return to District 103, kindly let your child’s school office know about your plans so that we do not bother you about registration and place your child in a 2025-2026 classroom.
- The thermometer shows 960 students registered.
