UPCOMING PRODUCTION
Wizard of Oz will begin official rehearsals on November 5th! Last weekend we hosted auditions for our elementary munchkin chorus. We ended up casting 17 wonderful 2nd-5th graders from Prairie Center, Forest View, Rolling Ridge, and Cedar Creek. We are very excited to get to know these munchkins!
EURYDICE RECAP
We had a fantastic experience performing Eurydice. The students really enjoyed working on this beautiful show. We have taken down the set and put all props, costumes, lumber, etc. into storage so that we can pop it back out if we make it to state! We will know around Thanksgiving time!
Scenic design by Art Winter

Fundraising
- Kids had a great time running the concession stand for the OW Soccer game on 10/18 and OE vs. OS Soccer game on 10/19. Thanks for helping the department! See Oz Powell's cool dance moves below that kept everyone entertained!
- Next fundraiser is Selling Pizza Street Cards. This fundraiser will roll out on the first day of Musical Rehearsals (Nov. 5). We will be giving them to Musical cast and crew, but all are welcome to participate. The pizza street cards are $10.00 and you get 10 FREE BUFFETS! If that isn't an amazing enough deal, OW gets to keep 70% of the profit. It's unreal!!

Advocacy
- Westview Elementary 4th and 5th graders came this week for a PBL collaboration workshop. High school students taught workshops on acting, stage basics, and stage presence. They were a blast to host! So much creativity! And a great learning experience for our HS kids to get a chance to teach.
- We are heading to Forest View Elementary on Thursday, Oct. 25 to teach a stage makeup and acting workshop to the 4th graders. We will be theming it around Halloween face makeup, but throwing in some theatrical terms as well! Another great experience and opportunity to collaborate with the young ones!
THEATRE PRODUCTION I HIGHLIGHTS
- DRAMATIC CRITICISM UNIT
We learned how to critique live theatre more positively through a concept called "joaning." Ask your kids about it! We watched Shrek the Musical and then wrote a reflection on the show. The students then used that process as practice for their large Theatre Evaluation Paper that is due by the end of the semester. - HAIR/MAKEUP UNIT
We learned about hygiene and sanitation when working with wigs and makeup products. Students also got to experiment with gore makeup -- burns, cuts, scars, etc. Some of them have shown me the awesome work they've done with their own gore makeup at home. Just in time for Halloween! - LIGHTING UNIT
Our current unit. We are exploring the Basic Functions of Lighting, the Controllable Properties of Light, Lighting Positions, and the color spectrum of light. We learned how to hang and focus a light and will soon be creating a lighting journal by taking pictures of interesting light we see in our surroundings. We will also complete a practical summative assignment where the students program their own light cues on our light board.
ACTING I HIGHLIGHTS
- COMMEDIA DELL'ARTE
An ancient form of Italian Improvisational theatre. Characters were incredibly silly and were often portrayed similarly by different actors. We played around with the body movements and sounds that these actors used while performing this hilarious comedic genre. - SHAKESPEARE
We are currently reading Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. Check out our improv recap video of Act I below! Students will complete a Shakespeare scene assignment following the reading of this play.

REPERTORY THEATRE HIGHLIGHTS
- REP SHOW REHEARSALS & CHOREOGRAPHY
We have been working with two new choreographers. Sisters Maggie and Mollie Stephens. The students have really enjoyed working with these two choreographers. We are lucky to have these two hired professionals funded through an in-district Fine Arts grant. Be sure to check out our free show in the Flex Theater on Saturday, November 3 at 7:00pm! - REP TECH
The Rep tech students, Mayson Bales and Nora Bishop, have been working hard to restore our Flex Theater to a natural lighting plot. They've been up in the grid re-cabling, re-hanging, and re-focusing. A lighting technician's job never ends!
TECHNICAL THEATRE I HIGHLIGHTS
- FLAT BUILDING PROJECT COMPLETION
We finished building Olathe West Band's flats that they will use in future marching shows! See pictures below! - SPOOKY CRIME SCENE COLLABORATION
Public Safety and the Science Department have asked us to collaborate with them by creating a Haunted House crime scene. Students in the class designed the "maze" for the haunted house and are currently implementing it. They are having fun creating some spooky stuff!
