A NOTE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear SHS Parents and Guardians,
Today I am pleased to share some exciting news. Thursday evening, six of our 8th graders participated in the Knights of Columbus Council 1436 Spelling Bee and achieved a fantastic outcome!
While they didn't take home the top prize, several students demonstrated exceptional skills and made it quite far in the contest. One student, Max Villareal, earned 4th place and was awarded Honorable Mention for his impressive spelling abilities. This is a significant accomplishment, considering there were over 40 participants from middle schools throughout Burlington County.
Kudos to Mrs. Latham who helped prepare our students. We are immensely proud of our 8th graders who participated, as they each played a valuable role in representing our school. Their commitment to learning and perseverance throughout the competition is truly commendable.
Many Blessings
Mrs. Joanna Barlow
Principal

CHEERFULNESS AWARD WINNERS
Congratulations to the following students for practicing the virtue of Cheerfulness throughout the month of February: Sophia Carnivale, Nathan Mays, Logan Soo, Lydia Kuruvilla, Cristian Malm, Molly Murray, Faith Davis, Gannon Leonard, Evelyn Hubbell, Arya Smith, Eli Hall, Leanna Reed, and Logan Garinger.
VIRTUES IN PRACTICE
The March virtue of the month is Temperance: enjoying things in a proper balanced way. The Virtues in practice Curriculum describes Temperance as the virtue of moderation and balance.
Temperance is all about knowing your limit and making good choices about how much of something is good for you. Temperance does not mean avoiding your favorite or pleasant things, instead, using pleasant things in a way that is healthy, balanced, and consistent with what is good. Temperance allows us to have neither too much or too little of what we need and desire. Lent, it is an appropriate time to dwell upon this particular virtue as we participate in Lenten fasts and devotions in an effort to rid ourselves of worldly attachments and draw closer to God. Those students who exemplify Temperance will be honored at our April 12 First Friday Mass.

READ ACROSS AMERICA WEEK MARCH 4 - 8
Read Across America week begins Monday! The week and month of March will be filled with fun activities. Along with our themed dress days, students will create their own Dr. Seuss Character, participate in Reading Buddies, Reading Theatre and our Tournament of Books. Teachers in grades Pre K- grade 4 will be reaching out regarding a Classroom Mystery Reader. Throughout the Month of March we will run our Booksmiles Service Project. Families are asked to donate gently used books (no writing in the books) and we will deliver them to BookSmiles. Booksmiles.org helps to promote literacy and the joy of reading by giving books to Philadelphia and New Jersey children who need them most. See below for our themed dress down days.
As always dress and costumes must be appropriate for a Catholic School. Dress down guidelines can be found in the Student/Parent Handbook.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH - CLASSROOM HIGHLIGHTS
This week for Black History Month our students in 1st grade learned about the children who helped to protest during the Civil Rights Movement. They read The Youngest Marcher, a book about the youngest known child to be arrested for a civil rights protest in Birmingham, Alabama, 1963. The story emphasizes you are never too young, or too little to make a difference. To celebrate Black History Month, second graders recently performed two skits; Rosa Parks Rides the Bus and George Washington Carver Saves the Day.
Our 4th grade students learned about Timbuctoo, a very interesting local community. Timbuctoo was a free black settlement 35 years before the Civil War. The community was first settled in September of 1926 when a Quaker man, William Hilyard, sold parcels of land to Ezekiel Parker, David Parker, Wardell Parker, and Hezekiah Hall. Timbuctoo was part of the underground railroad whose history was not discovered until the 1990's when Guy Weston's family received a land inheritance. Many documents have established the historical value of Timbuctoo. Timbuctoo is a mere 1.9 miles from Sacred Heart School.
Additionally, they learned about Pittsburgh Pirate, Roberto Clemente, one of very few black men playing baseball in 1955. During this time there were still many places of segregation. Roberto spoke up against segregation. His actions on and off the field won over the hearts of Pittsburgh fans. He won the MVP award in 1971, and was the first Latino to be elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
During Mrs. Krieger's lesson's this month students learned about Diversity and Inclusion. We read books like "We're Different, We're the Same", "Strictly No Elephants", and "What if We Were All the Same?". Students made "All are Welcome" signs, Diversity Trees, and reflected on why having a diverse world is good for everyone and how best to ensure our classroom is a place of inclusion. Older students focused on practicing habits of acceptance/tolerance rather than judgment and how to make connections across differences.
Each day during Black History Month 2024, African Americans and the Arts, I shared information about prominent Black artists, artistry, dancers, photographers, musicians, actors, etc. As a way to wrap up the month, ask your children what they learned or found interesting during Black History Month 2024.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR CONTINUED SUPPORT
Giving Tuesday is a global day of generosity, when people make donations to all kinds of organizations. Tuesday, November 28 marked the 5th year SHS participated in this global day of giving. Giving Tuesday is not just about money, people can donate time, food and even parts of themselves. With this in mind, we saw Giving Tuesday as a teachable moment for our students. On Giving Tuesday our students pledged to give back by doing something good for others. We reinforced the idea that giving and kindness isn't about a day, it is a way to live our lives.
Sacred Heart School would like to thank all of those people who participated in our Giving Tuesday Campaign. If you missed out and would still like to participate in Giving Tuesday please click here or scan the QR code. Our Campaign runs throughout the school year. Your contribution, no matter how small, will make a difference. Your financial gift will directly contribute to offering the students of Sacred Heart School a dynamic, faith-filled, values centered curriculum that fosters creative thinkers and problem solvers. Thank you for being a part of the Giving Tuesday movement with us!
