Principals' Message
Dear SCS Families and Caregivers,
You may have heard your child mention that we have had more “Clear the Halls” situations at school this year, and we thought it would be helpful to share a little more detail about what this looks like for our students and staff members.
Our recent PreK-8 full faculty and staff meeting this week was a safety tabletop discussion focused on this crisis command and our responses. Please note that we use this command only when absolutely necessary, and we do so to protect the safety of all of our students and families.
What is “clear the halls”?
Schools in CVSD practice four Universal Crisis Commands, which are posted in each classroom throughout our building. They guide the adult responses when situations involving student safety come up. “Clear the Halls” is one of these commands, and it’s one that we’ve used more frequently this year.
Why we would use the “clear the halls” crisis command?
This crisis command indicates to students and staff members that something is happening in our hallways that requires a clear path for adults to respond. This practice provides privacy for anyone who is in crisis, whether it’s a student in crisis being picked up from school, a staff member with a health issue being taken by an ambulance, or even a building maintenance need (ie plumbing issue), etc.
What do we do during a “clear the halls” situation?
The crisis command is stated on our P.A. system (overhead speakers throughout the building) and on our radios. The student is instructed to follow the adult’s directions and get to the nearest room with an adult, if they are not already in a classroom. Teaching continues during this time. Most clear the halls situations only last a short time - it’s often less than a minute.
Here is an example of a Social Story that can be reviewed with students to help explain the process and why we might be telling people to “Clear the Halls”.
Our school teams are working hard to support all students, and reduce the frequency of using this crisis command. We also appreciate everyone's continued responsiveness during these situations to ensure everyone's safety.
This was a pretty heavy, yet timely and relevant topic to share with all of you. Now, we hope you all enjoy a safe and serene fall weekend in Vermont.
Take care,
Alison, Brett, & Emily

Congratulations to our 3rd and 4th grade volunteers! Check Your Shelf is a program that Ms. Lucia, our Librarian, brought to SCS. She invites students in grades 3 and 4 to 'adopt a shelf', and they help maintain and take care of that bookshelf in the library. The kids are amazing at helping us maintain such an awesome library!
