Supporting Our Students through the Deaf Support Department (DSD)
Supporting Our Students through the Deaf Support Department (DSD)
We would like to remind parents of the ongoing support available through our Deaf Support Department (DSD). The DSD is an established part of our school, dedicated to providing tailored support for children who are deaf.
What is the DSD?
The DSD is designed to meet the educational, social, and communication needs of students who are deaf. Our team includes a Qualified Teacher of the Deaf (QTOD), specialist support staff, and speech and language therapists, all working together to ensure that each child’s individual needs are fully supported.
Audiological Support
Students accessing the DSD benefit from a wide range of audiological services, including:
Access to hearing aids and cochlear implant support: Our staff, alongside the QTOD, are trained in the use and maintenance of hearing devices, ensuring students’ equipment is functioning optimally.
Regular audiological assessments: Students' hearing is regularly monitored in partnership with audiologists, ensuring that any changes in their hearing needs are addressed promptly.
Radio aids and personal amplification devices are provided for all of the deaf children and staff are trained on how to use them in class.
Hearing aid troubleshooting and maintenance: We provide support in troubleshooting hearing aids, ensuring that students remain engaged in their learning without interruptions caused by equipment issues.
Specialist Educational Support
In addition to audiological care, our DSD offers:
Small group and one-to-one sessions: Designed to reinforce classroom learning and provide targeted support.
Speech and Language Therapy: Deaf children have access to speech and language therapy, focusing on developing communication skills, including spoken language, lip-reading, and auditory processing.
Targeted Interventions and Assessments: We offer specialised assessments, often overseen by the QTOD, to evaluate the needs of deaf children and identify key areas for intervention. Targeted interventions are implemented to support language development, literacy, and social communication, ensuring every child reaches their full potential.
We encourage any parents whose children may benefit from the Deaf Support Department to get in touch to learn more. We are committed to ensuring every child in our school community has access to the tools and support they need to succeed.
For more information or to discuss your child’s needs, please contact Mr Nur Uddin, Assistant Headteacher for Inclusion and Lead QTOD.
Careers
We are pleased to share an update on the exciting careers and guidance activities we’ve been working on this term. Our Year 11 students are benefiting from weekly careers-related assemblies, designed to provide insights into a wide range of career paths, apprenticeships, and further education opportunities. These sessions aim to inspire and inform students as they approach key decision-making moments.
In addition, we’ve begun our 1:1 careers meetings with all Year 11 students this week. These individual sessions allow us to offer personalised advice and guidance, helping each student to explore their aspirations and the best routes to achieve their goals.
Looking ahead, we are excited to present our annual Post-16 Pathways Assembly for Year 10 students, giving them an early opportunity to explore the various options available after secondary school, including sixth form, college, apprenticeships, and vocational courses.
It was a pleasure meeting many of you at the Year 10 and 11 Parent Information Events over the last few weeks. Your involvement is crucial in supporting students through this important phase, and we look forward to working closely with you to ensure the best outcomes for your children. However, our careers curriculum is not aimed at KS4 alone. We also have forthcoming events aimed at students in KS3. We look forward events such as Dragons' Den, Financial Awareness and further workshops aimed to educate students in KS3 on future careers.
We are also delighted to announce that our partnership with the IntoUniversity charity is in full swing once again this year. This annual programme offers students from all year groups a fantastic opportunity to participate in a range of workshops and university visits designed to broaden their understanding of post-16 pathways.
Last week, the class of Year 11 students took part in their first workshop of the year, where they explored different post-16 options and began developing key skills to support their future ambitions.
We look forward to sharing more updates as the year progresses!

Parenting Advice from Newham
We have been running this article for the last couple of weeks and it remains as part of our newsletter as we know, at the Lister News Desk, that it is helpful to have advice on being a parent. There are still a couple of workshops in next couple of days and it might be that it is the ideal advice you need to give you support. As a community school, we see our ties to Newham as central to our development. If you need support, you can reach out to us as a school and out to the wider Newham community. Newham are running a new online parenting course, Strengthening Families, Strengthening Communities (SFSC), which has been developed by the Race Equality Foundation . Information and how to register can be found below and on the attached poster.
To book a course or explore our other parenting programmes, please visit Newham's Parenting Offer Page on Newham Families Advice and Support.

London Parent Childcare Survey
The London Borough of Newham would like to hear from parents and carers about
their childcare needs. Your views are important in helping us decide how to shape services that will be useful for you.
We are asking parents and carers in Newham whether they use childcare, how they use it, what they think about it and whether they would like to use more.
The questionnaire will take around 10 minutes to complete. The closing date to submit your survey is Sunday 8 December 2024. We are very keen to ensure your views are taken into account. Anyone completing the survey can opt in to be entered into a free prize draw for a chance to win £100 of shopping vouchers.
At the end of the questionnaire, there is an opportunity for you to request further information about funded early education, the new extension to funded childcare, wraparound childcare, help with childcare costs and childcare providers in Newham.
