THE LEGACY TOUR COMES TO NORTH MIDDLE
DO YOUR DAILY DECISIONS MOVE YOU TO BE GREAT? This just one of the questions that the Legacy Tour asked our student to reflect upon.
Last Friday, North Middle kicked off the school year with an inspiring assembly led by Rousawn Dozier and Ryan Baker, known for their impactful "Legacy Tour." Students spent the afternoon engaging in meaningful discussions about the importance of character, the power of turning obstacles into opportunities, and how having the right attitude can shape their lives and goals. The assembly wasn't just about listening—it was about participation, too. Students danced, played games, and actively engaged in lessons that will resonate with them throughout the year.
The energy and enthusiasm in the room were palpable, setting a positive tone for the months ahead. We want to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who helped bring the Legacy Tour to North Middle. With this powerful start, we're excited for the great things to come this school year!
2024-2025 AT A GLANCE - MARK YOUR CALENDARS NOW!
UPDATE EMERGENCY CARD INFORMATION
It is important that we have current, updated parent contact information in case of emergency. Students will receive a written emergency card on the first day of school or parents can complete one by scanning the QR code or clicking the button below.
NEW iPADS & ACCEPTABLE USE POLICY
Student Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) forms should have been returned already or completed online. If that has not been done by THIS FRIDAY, AUGUST 30th, students will have their devices locked until that form is brought back to school.
STUDENT DROP OFF / PICK UP
If you plan to bring your student to school in the morning or pick them up in the afternoon, please use the access road between the Rec center on Woodbury Ave and North Middle School. NO PARENTS SHOULD ENTER THE MAIN ENTRANCE AT THE FRONT OF THE BUILDING. We also ask you not to park in the side parking lots in the morning due to limited parking. Teachers need to be able to park and get to class in the mornings. If you need to park for some reason, please do so in the Rec center parking lot and have your child walk across the field. Please see the aerial photo below for directions.
Remember, students are not to enter the building until 7:15am. Please do not drop off your child earlier than 7:15am.
THE ROLE OF PARENTS IN DRESS CODE & CELL PHONE POLICIES
Parental involvement is crucial in helping students adhere to school dress code and cell phone policies, ensuring a focused and respectful learning environment. By taking a few minutes each morning to check that your child’s attire meets school guidelines, you help reinforce the importance of following rules and promote a sense of discipline. Additionally, avoiding unnecessary calls or texts during school hours—except during lunch, when phone use is permitted—minimizes distractions and allows students to concentrate fully on their studies. Your support in these areas not only aids in your child’s success but also contributes to a positive school community. Thank you for partnering with NMS in enforcing school rules and policies.

COUNSELING & COMMUNITY NEWS
COUNSELING SEMINARS TO BEGIN NEXT WEEK
As required by Jamie’s Law (HB 2535), all public middle and high schools MUST provide suicide prevention awareness information by September 1. Our school counselors will be visiting classrooms during PBL time during the second week of school to introduce themselves and share this information. The presentation follows a pamphlet created by BCS that students will bring home. We will discuss warning signs, resources available, and how to access prevention resources for yourself or someone else should you need to.
In addition, counsleors will be going over certain topics including, but not limited to, sexual harassment, body safety, and eating disorder education, etc. throughout the school year per West Virigina State Requirements. If you do not wish for your child to particpate in these seminars, please email Ms. Sigler, brianna.sigler@k12.wv.us, or Ms. Poe, lauren.lewis@k12.wv.us to let them know.
The student pamphlet for the suicide prevention seminar is attached below.

THE VITAL ROLE OF PARENTS DURING MIDDLE SCHOOL
"For someone to do well in school, somebody needs to make him go to bed on time and get a good 10 hours of sleep. Someone must make him do his homework. Somebody must feed him breakfast in the morning and somebody must make him mind the teacher. If those things are not done, I don't care how much money you put in the school system, education will not occur." - Walter Edward Williams, American Economist & Commentator
Many times as our children age and are able to do more for themselves, parents wonder if they are still needed. Middle school is a critical period in your child’s development, and your role as a parent is becomes even more essential in guiding them through these transformative years. Your involvement can make all the difference in their academic success and overall well-being.
Partnering with the School
Collaboration with the school is key to supporting your child during the middle school years. Start by maintaining open communication with teachers and staying informed about school policies and expectations (if you are reading this newsletter, you are off to a great start!). Understanding the rules helps you guide your child in adhering to them, reinforcing the importance of discipline and respect.
Participating in school activities and showing interest in your child's academic and extracurricular pursuits strengthens your connection to the school community and demonstrates to your child that you value their education. Additionally, respectfully advocating for your child ensures they receive the necessary support to overcome any challenges they may face.
Reinforcing Academics at Home
At home, you play a crucial role in emphasizing the value of education. Establish a dedicated study space, set clear expectations for schoolwork, and monitor your child’s progress regularly through Schoology. These practices show your child that their academic success is a priority. After all, their current, full time employment is that of "Student". They must master that job before obtaining an adult one.
Establishing Routines for Success
Family routines provide the structure that middle schoolers need. Set a consistent schedule for waking up, meals, homework, and bedtime. Prioritize family meals, limit screen time, and encourage physical activity to promote a balanced lifestyle. Your daily involvement—ensuring proper rest, a nutritious breakfast, and consistent homework routines—lays the foundation for your child’s success.
Most importantly, parents should foster an environment of emotional support where children feel comfortable sharing their thoughts and feelings. One of our parents told us she recently began writing notes to her child as the school year began and hiding them around the house for them to find. This parent wrote to her child about her dreams for them, funniest memories together, & the child's best characterisitics and begin using these notes as a way of communicating with her middle schooler on a more mature level. As our kids grow, our relationships with them must evolve as well. Never forget how parental guidance and reassurance during this time are invaluable as they navigate the challenges of adolescence. Mom & Dad --- THEY STILL NEED YOU!
WHO IS YOUR TRUSTED ADULT?
As you navigate middle school, you'll start facing big changes and important questions. Your body is changing, friendships are evolving, and you're beginning to think about more complex topics. During this time, it's crucial to have trusted adults in your life—people you can turn to for advice, support, and answers. Asking questions or seeking help from them isn't a sign of weakness; it's a smart and brave move.
Your trusted adult could be anyone who has your best interests at heart—like a parent, teacher, grandparent, coach, pastor, or even a family friend. These are the people who care deeply about you and want to help guide you through the challenges you're facing. To figure out who your trusted adults are, think about who listens to you, gives good advice, and makes you feel safe and understood.
Remember, these adults are there because they care about you and want the best for you. Don't hesitate to reach out to them when you're feeling uncertain, confused, or just need someone to talk to. They're here to help you grow, learn, and succeed in every part of your life.
If you think about your life and realize you don't have a trusted adult, don't worry. There is a building FULL of adults at North Middle School who want to help you learn and grow. Find one of your teachers, counselors, administrators, or coaches and talk to them. You might find that they are the trusted adult you need in your life!

A COOL THING HAPPENED IN CLASS...
*To build a positive classroom environment, 7th grade Social Studies teacher Mr. Peters had his students working to solve a problem in class together. In teams, students had to use legos to make the largest structure they could that would FLOAT in a bowl of water. There was a lot of trial and error, but also a lot of fun and problem-solving!
*A HUGE THANK YOU to Family Bible Church! They provided all of the notebooks Ms. Simmons needed for her 8th graders this school year! We are so grateful for community partnerships like this!
