MISSION, VISION AND VALUES
Our BPS Mission: "Empower every learner to thrive."
Our BPS Vision: "Together, our strong relationships build inclusive, collaborative, and innovative environments that create agency and inspire a passion for learning, excellence, and discovery."
Our BPS Values: Inclusion, Excellence, Innovation and LeadershipMessage from Dr. Herman
What is Title 1? Title 1 is a federal program in the United States that provides financial assistance to schools based on need determined by the free and reduced lunch applications.
It is important for parents for several reasons:
1. Educational Support: Title I funds are often used to provide additional academic support and resources to students who are struggling in school. This can include tutoring, after-school programs, and resources like textbooks and technology.
2. Parental Involvement: Title I encourages parental involvement in their child's education. Schools receiving Title I funds are required to develop a parent and family engagement policy, which can help parents stay informed and engaged in their child's learning.
3. Equity in Education: Title I aims to level the playing field by providing extra resources to schools. This helps ensure that all students, regardless of their socioeconomic background, have access to a quality education.
4. Improved Student Achievement: The additional support and resources provided through Title I can lead to improved student achievement. When parents are actively involved, students are more likely to succeed academically.
5. Accountability and Transparency: Title I requires schools to report on how funds are used and the progress of students receiving services. This transparency helps parents hold schools accountable for their children's education.
In summary, Title I is important for parents because it helps bridge educational gaps, encourages parental involvement, and strives for equity in education, ultimately leading to improved educational outcomes for students.
We will have our Fall Title 1 presentation on Monday, October 16, to review our Title Plan.
Dress for the Weather!
As the weather turns colder, we want to emphasize the importance of dressing your child appropriately to keep them comfortable and safe. Cold temperatures can be challenging for young ones, but with the right clothing, we can ensure they stay warm and healthy during the winter months. Please remember jackets, gloves, and hats for your child.

Attendance
DID YOU KNOW...
Missing just 1 or 2 days a month makes it hard for students to:
Gain and retain reading and math skills
Build meaningful relationships
Develop life and work habits
Feel positively about school and themselves
What you can do...
- Set a regular bedtime and morning routine
- Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before
- Use the school calendar in your family planning
- Talk about and celebrate school everyday
- Keep up to date with school communication
- Create a routine for practice and learning at home
Start the school year off right!
Generate excitement by doing a countdown until the 1st day of school.
Attend open house with your child to meet teachers and classmates.
Read the school handbook for health and safety procedures.
Ask for resources to continue learning at home when needed.
Have a backup plan for getting to school such as family members, neighbors or another parent.
If your child seems anxious about school talk to your teacher, doctor or other parents for advice.
Below you will find a 23-24 school calendar to support you in planning vacations and appointments. You will have access to receive a hard copy during our Open House on August 22nd.
Parent Resources
PowerSchool
Parents and guardians can create their own PowerSchool username/password and view all children's information from one account. This account will remain the same from year to year to access their children's academic progress, attendance, and meal account information in PowerSchool. All parents will need to create a new login by entering an email address and choosing your own password.
Here's how to create a new account:
1. Go to https://bismarck.ps.state.nd.us.
2. Click the "Create Account" button.
3. Enter your information at the top.
4. Link your students to the account by entering: student name, ID, and password in the bottom section. The Access ID and Password are the same ones you used before! If you don't remember them, call or email your school secretary.
5. Once the account has been created you can sign in to the parent portal using the username and password created and see all of your students!

Standard Based Grading
Standards-based grading is an educational approach that focuses on assessing students' mastery of specific learning objectives or standards, rather than just assigning traditional letter grades. It provides a clearer picture of students' strengths and areas that need improvement. Teachers use detailed feedback and multiple assessments to track progress towards these standards. This approach aims to enhance learning and better inform both students and parents about the specific skills and knowledge being developed. Want to learn more? Click below.

As of 2010, 10.2% of the students in US public schools were ELL (English Language Learners). That means about 5 million parents do not speak English as their native language. Harnessing the power of translation is an essential step in helping ELL families to feel connected and included (Smore’s, 2023). You can translate this newsletter into multiple languages.
