Modeling Kindness & Appropriate Language
Principal's Message
Among the most common and concerning things we are seeing is harsh language. This goes beyond just swearing, and is not just about specific words that should not be used in school. Our staff and students have made note that the way in which people are talking to each other seems to be disrespectful, insensitive, and even inappropriate far too much of the time. This is especially noticeable when students encounter frustration and disappointment, or when being directed to comply with school rules. As the adults in our students' lives, we need to model for our students how to appropriately and kindly deal with setbacks, what language is appropriate to use when interacting with others, and generally show respect for others and ourselves.
In just the last few days, I've heard reports that:
- teachers have been disrespected when enforcing the cell phone policy, being told "what are you going to do to me"
- paraprofessional staff members have been disrespected by students when asked to clear hallways so that others can get through
- in the parent drop-off line a staff member was told to "f-off" while trying to direct traffic safely by a parent
- students are calling each other names that are vulgar and worse
These are just a handful of examples, and clearly not all of our students and parents would engage in this type of behavior. It is, however, important to know that our students look to us for an example of how to behave, and reminders about expectations are always important to review.
I encourage everyone to take a moment to become reacquainted with the opening pages of our Code of Responsibility and Respect, which applies to all of us: students, parents/guardians, staff members, and administrators.
We need to all work together to make sure that NFHS is a place where all students and staff feel respected and accepted, and everyone feels like they are a part of our REBEL Pride!

Together In Wellness: Gambling & Gaming
For most adults in the U.S., gambling is a harmless form of fun and entertainment. But for some, it can lead to addiction. Casino gaming (both in-person and online), and sports betting are restricted to those age 21 or older. You must be 18 in CT to purchase Lottery tickets and play Keno.
Risk factors for problem gambling include an early big win, exposure to gambling (family members who gamble or from advertising), and a lack of financial literacy. Microtransactions and loot boxes within some video games can be considered gambling because the individual is purchasing something that may or may not enhance their game (it’s a risk).
Most NFHS students do not engage in this risky behavior, however, 16% reported gambling one or more times in the last 12 months and 5% reported gambling 3 or more times in the last 12 months*. Gambling is defined in this survey as buying lottery tickets, or betting money on sports teams or card games.
Talk to your kids about the risks related to gambling. Monitor their screen time and any online purchases within their video gaming.
