If your student is bringing lunch from home, please keep in mind we do not have microwaves available to heat student meals. Please do not send student with Ramen Noodles and Easy Mac.

We continue to have people not using the crosswalk in the west parking lot.

We are also having a lot of problems with adults being disrespectful to staff when asked to use the crosswalk. Please understand that our staff is following the directives they are being given by administration. We are not trying to argue. We are simply trying to keep students, parents, and staff safe in the parking lots. We ask for your assistance in modeling safe procedures in the parking lots.

If you have questions or concerns about these procedures, please contact Heather MacDonald or E'lyse Benson at 231-760-1700.

Please send students dressed appropriately for winter weather. As we are experiencing cold, snowy weather, it is important that students are properly dressed for outdoor temperatures, snow, and slush. Boots, snowpants, hats and mittens are helpful. Students will not be permitted to stay indoors unless the temperature "feels like" less than 10 degrees.

We recommend labeling all winter wear so it is easy to identify when lost or when items get mixed up between students.

Finally, please use extra caution in the drop off and pick up lanes. Icy conditions can lead to accidents and we don't want students, parents, or staff to be hurt!

Please do not allow students out of vehicles until 8:00. There is not staff available to supervise students and it is not safe to have children standing outside unsupervised.

School begins at 8:10 and your student is tardy at 8:10.

Our staff stands outdoors from 8:00-8:10 each morning. At 8:10, we start walking towards the doors and once we are inside, your student will need to be signed in tardy at the office window in order for us to maintain accurate attendance records. If an adult signs the student in, it is an excused tardy. If there is no adult to sign in the student, it is an unexcused tardy.

While we understand that this may be frustrating, this can be avoided by ensuring that your student arrives to school prior to 8:10.

At Cardinal Elementary, we believe that when our students work hard all day, they should not come home with hours of homework. When they come home, they should have time to play, participate in activities, and have quality time with family.

We DO prioritize reading at home for 20 minutes daily. This can be done through reading to self or being read to. Research shows that children who read at home daily achieve higher literacy outcomes. Here is a link from What Works Clearinghouse on Tips for Supporting Reading Skills At Home

The only other homework sent home will be work that has not been completed during time provided at school and occasional study guides for unit assessments.

This year, we have been seeing waves of inappropriate, disruptive, and mean behaviors suddenly appear here at school. As we investigate and talk to kids about where they are learning/seeing these things, we are discovering Tik Tok is often the source.

This week alone, 2 major behaviors have been emerging at school with Tik Tok as the root cause.

1) Students knocking down items in the classroom or belonging to peers while saying "meow" repeatedly.

2) Kids asking peers about family members who have passed away or about other personal struggles. They are later getting into "roasting battles" and telling their peers hurtful things like, "That's why your grandma died", or "That's why your dad left you".

Behaviors such as these, and others we can attribute to Tik Tok and Youtube, cause a disruption to the learning environment and more importantly lead to hurt feelings, damaged relationships, and kids not feeling safe at school.

We are sharing a link to an article about Tik Tok use with children. We are sharing this because we believe we need to work together to ensure each child feels safe at school each day and has the opportunity to be a part of a positive, productive learning environment.
