Parent/Teacher Conferences - October 22nd & 24th
Parent/Teacher Conference Format Details:
Conference dates will be October 22nd and October 24th from 3:00 - 6:30 each evening. If you are unable to schedule a conference on one of those evenings, teachers will work with you to arrange an alternate time.
In-person Conferences and Virtual Conferences will be offered each night. Please do your best to start and end each conference on time. Teachers have been encouraged to set a timer to proactively stay on pace.
In the past we have held half the conferences in person and half virtual. Based on last year’s conferences, approximately 70% preferred in-person conferences. To better meet your needs, our time slots will reflect 70% in person and 30% virtual each night. We will begin with virtual conferences on Tuesday and in person conferences on Thursday.
Virtual Conferences will be held through Google Meet video conferencing. You are welcome to use your child’s device to access Google Meet.
Prior to the conference, the teacher will send you a Google Meet link or code to use for the virtual conference.
When it is your time to meet, just click on the link or enter the access code and you will be able to talk with your child’s teacher(s) regarding his/her progress and how you can continue to support learning at home.
We will use SignUp Genius to schedule conferences. Please click here to access the SignUp Genius. SignUp Genius will be live from October 14th through October 18th.
If you are unable to find a conference time, please contact the teacher directly to make arrangements for a mutually convenient date/time to conference. Please don’t feel the need to meet with each teacher but rather schedule with those you feel that you need to connect with. We strongly recommend signing up for your student’s advisory teacher /one core teacher, as space is limited for each teacher.
Parent/Teacher Conference Meal Sign Up!
Please click on the below link if you would like to contribute towards teacher meals during the Parent/Teacher Conferences.

The Power of Asking Questions: Your Key to Understanding What You Read
Have you ever been reading a book or an article, and suddenly, your mind starts to wander? Or maybe you hit a part of the story that just doesn’t make sense. Guess what? You’re not alone! Asking questions while you read is one of the best ways to clear up confusion, and it's a skill that will help you become a stronger reader.
Why Ask Questions?
When you read, you might come across words, phrases, or ideas that seem unclear or puzzling. Asking questions can help you dig deeper and figure out what’s really going on. Think of it like being a detective. If something doesn’t make sense, ask yourself questions like:
What does this word mean?
Why did the character do that?
What is the author trying to tell me?
When you ask these kinds of questions, you keep your brain active, which helps you stay focused and learn more from what you’re reading.
Types of Questions to Ask
There are different types of questions you can ask while you read. Here are a few to get you started:
Clarifying Questions – These help you understand what something means. Example: "What does the word ‘mysterious’ mean in this sentence?"
Predicting Questions – These let you guess what might happen next in the story. Example: "What do I think will happen to the main character?"
Connection Questions – These help you relate what you’re reading to something you already know. Example: "How is this similar to something I’ve read or experienced before?"
Big Idea Questions – These focus on understanding the overall message or lesson of the text. Example: "What is the author trying to say through this story?"
What to Do When You’re Confused
It's normal to feel confused sometimes. When you do, stop and ask yourself questions about the part that’s confusing. Here are a few tips:
Reread: Go back a few sentences or paragraphs and read again. Sometimes, you’ll catch something you missed the first time.
Break It Down: Try to figure out what exactly is confusing you. Is it a word, a character's actions, or a new idea? Once you know what’s confusing, you can focus on solving that specific part.
Ask for Help: If you’re still stuck, don’t be afraid to ask a teacher, a parent, or a friend for help. Sometimes, talking about the problem with someone else makes it easier to understand.
The Benefits of Asking Questions
By asking questions while you read, you are training your brain to think critically. This skill will help you not only in school but in everyday life as well. You'll become a more thoughtful reader and a better learner overall.
So the next time you're stuck or confused, remember that asking questions is your secret weapon. Keep questioning, keep thinking, and keep growing as a reader!

PREVIOUS NEWS
Parking Pick-Up/Drop-Off Reminder
We have designated 12 visitor parking spots near the main entrance. Please utilize these during the school day instead of using the circle driveway. In the event of an emergency, we need first responders to have unobstructed access. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
A Message from our Bay View Student Services Team
Due to the increase in virtual counseling appointments scheduled during the school day, we want to make sure we can provide adequate private space. If your child will be having scheduled virtual sessions with an outside provider, we would like your partnership in obtaining a signed Release of Information in order to assist your child with any technology or connection issues that may occur during their appointments.
We ask that you provide at least a 3 day notice per each virtual appointment in order to ensure that we have adequate and private space available to your child. If you notify the school the day of an appointment, we cannot guarantee an adequate space or that the message will be received in time to call your child out of class. We know that many appointments are already scheduled, but if you are planning on scheduling future appointments during the school day, we would appreciate it, if possible, avoiding Monday appointments. We do not have the same spaces available as we do on other days. If you need help finding the best time for your child to have scheduled appointments, please don't hesitate to reach out. Thank you for your help and partnership.

The Giving Tree
The Giving Tree will be starting to register families for our December Holiday Store. Please reach out to your school social worker if you think your student may benefit from assistance with The Giving Tree. For our generous community, look for information in future district communications about donating to our Holiday Store and volunteering!
This month we are collecting canned soup. Please feel free to send donations with your students to put in the collections bins/carts near the main office of school. Items can also be dropped off during school hours. The Giving Tree appreciates the community support in helping ensure food is not a barrier to a student’s education

STUDENT PICK-UP PROTOCOL
If you are picking a student up during the school day, you must come into the main office and sign the student out with your Driver's License. If someone other than you or your emergency contacts is picking up your student, please contact the office to let them know who is picking your student up. Students are not allowed to leave during school hours via bike or walking without prior approval from the main office and Principal.
HEALTH ROOM PROTOCOL
If your student is not feeling well, they need to follow protocol and come to the health room to report their illness prior to contacting home. Students should not be using their iPad to email a parent or texting a parent to pick them up. This will eliminate the spread of illnesses to other students and will make the office aware of students being picked up prior to parent arrival.
