GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS
New: National Teacher of the Year - Mia Battistone
National Teacher of the Year for Family and Consumer Sciences
Mia Battistone, a Family and Consumer Sciences teacher at Eastview High School, earned the National Teacher of the Year title from the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (AAFCS). Family and Consumer Sciences equips students with real-world skills in financial literacy, nutrition, child development, housing and interior design, and consumer education.
On Wednesday, February 12, Eastview staff, students, and AAFCS representatives surprised Battistone with the award during a celebration recognizing her dedication, innovation, and impact on Family and Consumer Sciences education. This June, she will formally accept the award at the AAFCS National Conference in Kansas City.
This national recognition adds to Battistone’s accolades, including her recent title as Minnesota Teacher of the Year from the Minnesota Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (MAFCS). Last year, she was also a finalist for the National Adviser of the Year Award, solidifying her reputation as a leader in Family and Consumer Sciences and in FCCLA (Family, Career and Community Leaders of America).

Your approved application provides critical funding to our school district. Zapp Mascot Loose Change Fundraiser
MISSING/WANTED: Zapp
Zapp, the EVHS Mascot, was last seen in public during The FLASH credits on March 9, 2017 (4:32 mark on YouTube). Official history of Zapp and origin story. The original Zapp costume is in bad shape and needs to be replaced. Eastview’s Student Council will be collecting loose change to fund a new ZAPP mascot costume. The cost to replace ZAPP is about $6,000. Bring loose change to Mr. Kelly in C232 or drop in buckets during morning collection at the Student Doors before Period 1. EVERY PENNY COUNTS! STUDENT SECTION
DETENTION UPDATE @ Eastview
Students can serve detentions on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 2:40-4:00pm in C134. Morning Detention from 6:55-7:35am in Student Services is another option Monday-Friday. Students earn (2) detention credits for serving in the afternoon and (1) detention credit for serving in the morning.
Detentions earned for the first (5) tardies in a class and then every three tardies after that need to be served within three weeks of notice or additional consequences and restricted opportunities may result. Detention is a quiet study hall where students are expected to work independently. Thank-you for your support in teaching Responsibility and Accountability.

Calling All Students for WIN Wednesday!
Students can benefit from an opportunity for academic support every Wednesday afternoon from 2:40pm – 4:15pm in the flex room located in the learning commons. Students are supported to complete their schoolwork learning in a supervised setting. In addition students can also utilize the WIN program to make up tests they may have missed. Students can get this approved through their teacher ahead of time and the test will be ready for them to take during WIN. Faculty and staff are available along with upper-class peer tutors (especially skilled in Mathematics). Students will identify their priorities (“What I Need” or “What’s Important Now”), create a plan for the most efficient use of their time, celebrate their accomplishments, and leave with a plan for continued success. Students do not need to sign up in advance for WIN Time. We do ask that students plan to be there for the start at 2:40pm so they can benefit from the full support. We will keep a log of students and their engagement (arrival/departure time and their focus/work while they are there). For students needing transportation home, activity buses will be available departing at 4:45pm.

COUNSELOR CORNER
Junior Counselor Meetings
On January 30th, Counselors met with all juniors during their scheduled English class. The purpose of this meeting was to go over credits, graduation requirements, college planning and post high school planning. During this presentation, juniors also signed up for a one-on-one meeting with their counselor which should take place sometime during quarter 3.

FAFSA Support
Dakota County Library will be offering FAFSA and MN Dream Act application help at four library locations this winter. This is in partnership with College Possible, who will staff the event and offer one-on-one guidance to students and their families. This is completely free and open to all high school seniors who need to apply for financial aid for college.

COLLEGE, UNIVERSITY, AND MILTARY VISITS
Prior to the university/college visits students should stop by the Counseling Office and get a pass to attend. The university/college visits are small group meetings typically lasting 20/30 minutes. These admission reps are often times the same people that review college applications, it's a great connection for students. Military visits are during the lunch hour in Student Services.

The Lightning Boys Volleyball program is hosting open gyms for anyone thinking about or planning on trying out this year. The Lightning Boys Volleyball Season is coming!
The Lightning Boys Volleyball Player and parent meeting is scheduled for February 20 at 6pm in room C250. Anyone hoping to tryout this year should attend and bring a parent/guardian if possible. Essential information about the season will be covered at this meeting. If you are interested in playing, but have a conflict that night make sure to contact Coach Dehnel.
New: Girls Flag Football Interest Meeting
There will be a meeting in C250 on Tuesday, February 11th at 2:35 for any girls interested in playing Flag Football this spring. Partnering with the NFL and the Minnesota Vikings, Eastview will have an official team that will compete against three other local high schools, and other schools around the Twin Cities. If you are interested, talk to Mr. Buckley or show up for a brief (10 minute) meeting. Flag Football will NOT conflict with any other spring sports like Track, Golf, Softball, Lacrosse, etc. This meeting is for informational purposes only, with no commitment necessary.

Athletes interested in trying out for baseball this spring can attend open gym. Athletes can hit, throw, and workout to prepare for the season. Open gym runs from 8-9:30pm on the following dates:

Boys Golf Info Meeting
Attention Boys Golfers: There will be an informational meeting for all boys interested in trying out for the golf team on Tuesday, February 25th in Room C250 at 2:35pm. Topics discussed will include the tryout process, pre-season training, team expectations and more. Come hear from the current captains and coaches about the upcoming season and how to best prepare for tryouts beginning March 17th. If you cannot attend the meeting please see Coach Wanous in the Counseling office after Feb. 25th for important information and a questionnaire to fill out.

ALPINE SKIING
7th Grader Kinsley Oberding placed 54th on Tuesday as an individual at State Alpine Ski in Giant’s Ridge! Amazing accomplishment for a 7th Grader with a very bright future!
GIRLS BASKETBALL
The girls still have two weeks left in the regular season. Currently they are in first place in the SSC and the top seed in Section 3AAAA and ranked #4 in the State. Their playoffs are scheduled for February 26th, March 1st and Section Championship Game is Thursday, March 6th. All games will be played at the site of the higher seeded team. Teams who qualify will participate in the State Tournament at Williams Arena March 12-15.
BOYS BASKETBALL
The boys still have three weeks left in the regular season and will face Prior Lake on Thursday night. Their playoffs are scheduled for March 4th, March 7th and their Section Championship Game is March 13th all at the site of the higher seeded team. Teams who qualify will participate in the State Tournament at Target Center and Williams Arena March 18-22.
COMPETITION CHEER
Congratulations to the Varsity Comp Cheer Team coached by Tim and Mario Navarro who competed this past weekend at the UCA National Cheer Championships in Orlando, Florida. After a great performance in prelims they advanced to the Semis and ended up placing 11th in their Game Day Non-Tumbling division against some of the best teams in the country! Congrats on a great season EV Comp Cheer!
DISTRICT 196 ICETTES
Congratulations to the District 196 Icettes on their first competition of the season this past weekend at the Frosty Blades competition in Blaine, where they competed against 22 other teams. The team received first place honors in All Team Production and Varsity Synchronized Skating and received second place in JV Synchronized Skating. There were great performances turned in by all the Team Compulsories team as well.
Good Luck to all the Icettes that will be traveling to Missouri this week to compete in the ISI Winter Classic National Competition.
GYMNASTICS
The Lightning Gymnasts will compete in the Section 3AA Section Championships at Woodbury on Friday, February 14th. The competition will begin at 5:30 p.m. Individuals and teams who advance to the State Tournament will compete at Roy Wilkins on February 21-22.
LIGHTNING DANCE TEAM
The Lightning Dance Team competed with 11 other teams in the Section 1AAA High Kick and Jazz Tournaments last evening in front of a packed house at Bloomington Kennedy High School. The Lightning were crowned Section Champions in both Jazz and High Kick and is now STATEBOUND in both divisions! It was the 42nd and 43rd Section Championships for LDT in Program history including 21st in a row in Jazz! It is the 28th year in a row (every year since the school opened) they will advance to State in BOTH Jazz and Kick. Earlier this year they also captured their 23rd SSC Championship in a row! They will compete in Jazz Prelims on Friday, February 14th at Target Center. The AA/AAA Jazz Prelims session will start at 2:00. Eastview will compete at approximately 3:12 p.m. Given this performance time there will not be an official early release process, but students wishing to attend as fans are allowed to attend with parent permission (normal absence process). The top six teams will advance to Finals at 7:15 p.m. Friday night. They will compete in High Kick Prelims on Saturday, February 17th at Target Center. VARSITY BOYS HOCKEY
The boys still have one week left in the regular season and finish up the regular season at home on Friday night vs. Shakopee. Their playoffs are scheduled for February 18th at High Seed, February 20th at High Seed, Feb. 25th at Braemar Arena and the Section Championship Game is Friday, February 28th at Braemar Arena in Edina at 7:00. Teams who qualify will participate in the State Tournament at Xcel Center March 6-8.
2/6: Eastview vs. Prior Lake
#29 Wakefield guarding the net for Eastview and making a total of 27 saves throughout the game.
The first and second periods were scoreless, with neither team managing to find the back of the net.
In the third period, Prior Lake broke the deadlock by scoring on a power play, taking a 1-0 lead. The Lakers added another goal, making the final score 2-0 in favor of Prior Lake.
Final score: Prior Lake 2, Eastview 0.
2/8: Eastview cs Lakeville North

In the first period, Lakeville North took an early lead by scoring, making it 1-0.
In the second period, Lakeville North quickly added two more goals, extending their lead to 3-0. Eastview's #4 Wooten responded with a goal, assisted by #14 O'Donnell, reducing the deficit to 3-1.
In the third period, #13 Berberena scored for Eastview, bringing the score to 3-2. However, Lakeville North secured the victory with an empty net goal, making the final score 4-2.
Final score: Lakeville North 4, Eastview 2.
Eastview vs Apple Valley 2/11:
On 2/11 Eastview faced off against Apple Valley/Burnsville with #32 Charlie Scanlon in net. The first period was scoreless. In the 2nd period, AV scores twice and takes the lead. In the 3rd period #4 Sam Wooten scores with an assist to Haagenson closing the gap 2-1. AV/Burnsville scores again making it 3-1. To finish off the game the Eagles find and open net and the game ends with a 4-1 loss.
JV BOYS HOCKEY
The JV Boys Hockey Team faced Lakeville North for a second time this season this past Saturday. Eastview had several good shots but couldn’t get anything past the Lakeville North goalie and Chris Ernster faced several tough shots throughout the game. In the first period, Lakeville North got on the board first and didn't give up the lead. In the second period, Lakeville North got 2 quick goals as well as third goal to end the second period 0 to 4. In the 3rd period, Eastview held strong but Lakeville North managed to get one last goal to end the game 0 to 5.
On Tuesday, the JV Boys played Apple Valley/Burnsville. Wesley Schoenwetter started off the Lightning scoring with 2 goals in the first period. Assisting the goals were Derrick Zackery and Frankie Setterlund. Apple Valley/Burnsville scored once to end the first period 2 to 1, Eastview. The second period started with Apple Valley/Burnsville scoring 2 goals, however, the Lightning didn’t sit back. Isaac Povolny scored with assists from Wesley Schoenwetter and Noah Schapochnicof. Derrick Zackery continued the scoring with assists from Ethan Chiglo and Wesley Schoenwetter. The second period ended 4 to 3, Lightning. The third period continued to be all Eastview as Isaac Povolny scored an unassisted goal and Sawyer Haagenson got an unassisted, short-handed, empty net goal to seal the 6 to 3 Lightning win. Ty Young was strong in the net and faced 28 shots. The JV Boys Hockey Team will play their final game of the season this Friday against Shakopee at the Apple Valley Sports Arena. Game time is 5 pm.
EASTVIEW/BURNSVILLE VARSITY GIRLS HOCKEY
Rosemount vs. Eastview 2/12
Eastview’s run of upsets came to an end on Wednesday night when they lost in the Section Championship to #1 seeded Rosemount. The game was scoreless through two periods, but Rosemount was able to find the back of the net in the third to win 1-0. Beth Bigalke was rock solid in net making 40 saves in the game. While the Lightning came up short, they had an amazing finish to their season beating the #2 and #3 seed in the section tournament. A special thanks to the three Senior Captains: Sari Cords, Ireland Murphy, and Ella Schaefer on incredible careers and for leading this team to a memorable finish!
Cretin-Derham Hall vs. Eastview 2/8
Eastview’s senior captains led the team to another big upset in the Section 3AA Quarterfinals beating the #2 seeded Cretin-Derham Hall. Ireland Murphy ended the game with a hat trick (3 goals), Sari Cords ended with a playmaker (3 assists) and Ella Schaefer scored the game winner in overtime!
Eastview took a 1-0 lead in the first period on a power play goal scored by Ireland Murphy assisted by Sari Cords and Jaden Slominski. After falling behind 2-1 in the second, Ireland Murphy scored again assisted by Jaden Slominski. The Lightning went down 3-2 early in the third, but Ireland Murphy got her third goal of the night assisted by Sari Cords and Ella Schaefer with just over 11 minutes left in regulation. After a scoreless first overtime, Ella Schaefer scored assisted by Sari Cords 8 minutes into the second overtime for the win! Beth Bigalke was solid in net making 38 saves.
CI AND PI HOCKEY
Our Dakota Hawks teams are both off and running with their seasons and CI is 2-3 and PI is 8-2 against some great competition. Their playoffs are still TBD based on their regular season finish. Their State Tournament, if they should qualify, will be held March 7-8 at Coon Rapids.
NORDIC SKIING
The ISD 196 Nordic Ski Sprint Teams competed in their portion of the State Meet yesterday at Giant’s Ridge with Evie Swenson (EV) and Noelle Wanken (RHS) placing 21st and Brock Taylor (EV) and Cole Hunter (AV) placing 19th. SWIM & DIVE
The Boys Swim and Dive regular season wraps up Tuesday night at Apple Valley at 6:00 at Valley Middle School. Their Section Swim Prelims will be held February 26th at Two Rivers High School. The Diving Competition is February 27th at Two Rivers and then Swim Finals are back at Two Rivers on February 28th Individuals and Relays that qualify for the State Meet will compete at the U of M March 6-8.
GIRLS WRESTLING
The Girls Members of the Eastview Wrestling team competed in the Section 1-2 Individual tournament on Friday and Saturday in Rochester. The Lightning had seven competitors in this ever growing competition! The Lightning were led by sophomore Saturn Belz who placed 4th and junior Caitlyn Tighe who placed 6th to earn Section Placewinner honors! Congrats to all Girls Wrestling team members on a great season!
WRESTLING
The Eastview Wrestling Team will host the Section 2AAA Team Tournament here at Eastview High School Friday, February 14th starting at 4:00. As a result the Main Gym will not be available for use all day on Feb. 14. The Boys Individual Tournament will be held Saturday, February 22nd at Farmington High School. All Individual and Team State Qualifiers will participate in the State Tourney at Xcel Center February 27-March 1.
9th Grade Wrestling Announcements

The Eastview Lightning 9th Grade Wrestling Team competed at Farmington in the Minnesota Ninth Grade Wrestling League Region 4 Individual State Tournament qualifier on Saturday January 25th.
Lightning wrestlers claiming a spot on the podium included:
Kyle Hadsall (1-2), finishing in 3rd place.
Anthony Garbuz (2-1), finishing in 3rd place.
Avnish Ghadge (1-3), finishing in 6th place.
Carl Kjeldsen-Bergquist (1-2) and George Reczallah (2-2) both finishing in 8th place.
Leo Chhang (0-2), Jacob Lopez (0-2), Peter Babajanov (0-2), Finley Zillhardt (0-2), also competed with valiant effort.
CLUB SPORTS
Sign Up For Rugby
Rugby registration is open for our Girls and Boys high school teams, open to all high school students.
NO EXPERIENCE IS NECESSARY. In rugby, everybody plays, everybody carries the ball, and everybody tackles. Rugby suits all body shapes and sizes, and teaches explosiveness, decision-making, and agility. Rugby is the only spring sport that teaches safe and highly effective tackling to improve football player performance and avoid injury. We are an ISD district club sport, meaning Varsity players may earn their letter.
Practice begins on Saturday, March 1st with our free TRY RUGBY event, from 1-2PM followed by our first practice from 2-4PM at the West St. Paul Dome. The season runs through the end of the school year. More information, including registration links, may be found at https://www.eaasports.org/rugby.
Eastview Trap Team Spring Season 2025
Registration runs from Feb 4th through March 24th. March 24th is a hard deadline at noon.
Season Cost is $330 plus the cost of jersey and shooting bag (purchased separately).
Season Dates: March 30th-May 21st
Wednesday is the normal shooting day at 4 p.m. at West End Gun Club unless student is in a conflicting schedule with spring sports or religious reasons. Option for that is Sunday a.m.
Fun shoot is May 28th.(optional but not required).
Minnesota State Shooting Championship June 9-17 2025 in Alexandria, Minnesota.
Eastview will shoot one of dates depending on team size. TBD

New: Poetry Out Loud Competition Results
Last week Alex Colchin (10th), Miri Douma (9th) and Aleena Ibrahim (9th) competed at the regional Poetry Out Loud competition in St. Paul. Aleena placed in the top three and, as a result, will represent Eastview at the state competition in Mankato on Friday, 2/21. Thank you to Bob Dettmer (who coordinates POL) and Rachel Lentner for working with these students.
FCCLA Week Is February 10-14
February 10-14th is FCCLA Week: All members are invited to participate in the events throughout the week. Member Monday: come decorate cookies after school in C139, Tuesday-Day of Service: Feed My Starving Children in Eagan, 5-6:30pm, Thursday: Red Party after School in C139/ Volunteer at Diamond Path Family Night and Friday: Celebrate FCCLA by wearing RED Valentine Rose Fundraiser before school. East African Club - Cultural Food Meeting Invitation
The East African Club invites you to represent six countries (TBD) at an upcoming Cultural Food Meeting. This event will focus on sharing and promoting discussions about the cultural cuisines of these countries.
Participation Expectations:
- Participants are expected to prepare, purchase, donate or find a local vendor willing to donate food representative of their chosen country.
- Students must sign up to participate and attend.
- This event is exclusively for students who agree to these participation expectations.

This workshop for parents and caregivers of 3rd – 12th graders will provide essential information and strategies for addressing the growing concerns around youth vaping and cannabis use, led by three experts in the field. Learn about the current nicotine and cannabis products popular among teens, the associated health risks, and how targeted marketing and social media affect youth behavior. The workshop will also cover the impact of recent cannabis policy changes in Minnesota and important information about legalization. By empowering parents and caregivers with knowledge and communication tools, the goal is to help you engage in effective conversations with your teens about the dangers of vaping and cannabis use.
