Message from Principal Zimmerman
Hello Lincoln Families,
As we head into spring, we continue to learn about our character traits each month and practice them in our daily activities. In April, we are learning the value of courage, which is defined as “choosing what is helpful, right and kind- even when it’s scary”. Lincoln students continue to show up every day- working hard, being helpful and showing kindness to their classmates and friends! Our students are amazing!
Speaking of working hard, it’s that time of year again when our 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students will be taking the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments. Families of 3rd, 4th and 5th graders received a letter with information about testing, but I wanted to review a few tips:
Please make sure your child is in school for these tests, as good attendance is a key factor for overall student success.
Be sure your child gets plenty of rest (this is important all the time, but especially for test days).
Eat healthy, balanced meals, and have a good breakfast on test day.
Remind your children not to get discouraged if they don’t know an answer.
Students are reminded that a suggested strategy is to select the best choice at that time and go back to review questions at the end of the testing section.
I am excited to share that Lincoln recently was assigned a co-located mental health therapist through People Inc. This program staffs a therapist at Lincoln, to work with our students, providing individual therapy during the school day. This is a contracted service provided by an outside agency called People Inc. so all intakes and billing are handled by them. Referrals are made through the school, or guardians can self-refer their child for this service. If this is a referral you may be interested in, you can either contact Sarah Burkart, Lincoln’s School Social Worker, to facilitate a referral or reach out to People Inc. directly through their Central Access intake line 651-774-0011.
Throughout the spring, the entire Lincoln community will continue to find ways to support your children academically, socially and emotionally. It is everyone’s goal that we finish the school year strong!
As always, thank you for your ongoing support of Lincoln!
Michelle Zimmerman

Kindergarten News
We hope you had a fabulous March and a wonderful spring break! Kindergarteners have made great strides in their reading and writing. We are working on writing complete sentences, starting with a capital letter, writing sight words correctly, sounding out words, and ending with a period, question mark or exclamation mark.
In our reading curriculum, we will begin Unit 8. Unit questions include: What can help you go from here to there? What do you know about our country? What do you see in the sky?
They have also made wonderful gains in math. Students are learning to show ways to make numbers (ex: Show 5 using number sentences, tally marks, finger patterns, 10 frame, etc). Students will learn about 3 dimensional shapes, explore teen numbers and make combinations to 10.

First Grade News
Hello First Grade Families,
This month we have been very busy at work. We started our animal reports for ELA. Our animal reports consist of all of your students choosing an animal they would like to learn about, completing research on that animal, and then creating a writing assignment as well as a picture. Both the picture and writing assignment have little things we have learned throughout the school year such as, labels on our pictures, captions on our pictures, as well as different types of punctuation and lastly, good first grade handwriting!
In math this month we are focusing on finding and solving for missing numbers in equations and word problems. We also revisit the penguins we learned about earlier in the year.
We are nearing the end of the school year and getting ready for all that May has to bring! Please keep an eye out for notes, reminders, and seesaw announcements for fun events, and exciting news!

Second Grade News
Hello April! Wow! The time seems to be flying by!
During the month of April we will be finishing our 4th Unit in Wonders and starting to work through our 5th Unit of Wonders called: Let’s Make a Difference. The big idea for the unit is: How can people make a difference?. Our new spelling lists come home the first day of each new “reading week”.
In Number Corner, we will be planting and measuring our own pea and corn seedlings. We will track their growth each week.
In math, we will be starting unit 7! In this unit, your child will:
- Estimate, measure, and compare the lengths of objects in centimeters and meters.
- Split whole shapes into 2, 3, 4, or 8 equal parts called halves, thirds, fourths/quarters or eighths.
- Solve, pose, and write addition, subtraction, and money story problems involving 2- and 3-digit numbers.

Third Grade News
Hello 3rd Grade Families!
This month there is something exciting happening in 3rd grade! The students will be learning about the life cycle of butterflies by observing real Painted Lady Butterflies. Each classroom has their own butterfly larvae and they will be watching for them to turn into butterflies!
In ELA, the students will finish Unit 4 in Wonders and begin Unit 5. Unit 5 focuses on how we can reuse the things we have. The students will read fairy tales, realistic fiction, and expository text. We will also work on characters and the author's point of view.
In math, the students are working on geometry. They are learning how to describe and classify two-dimensional shapes, calculate area and perimeter, and represent fractions as parts of a whole.

Fourth Grade News
Hello from Fourth Grade!
We have been very busy in reading class lately. We are close to finishing Unit 4 which focused on the point of view and cause/effect in some of our stories. We have also been illustrating some of our work in this unit. In writing, we have started to work on fictional narratives by thinking creatively and using our imaginations. Please continue to work on spelling and reading each night.
