HiTeen Mentoring Program Begins
We are very excited about our new partnership with Spring Hill Elementary that connects our high school students with elementary students to provide them with mentors. Twenty-nine FCHS students across all grade levels met with their mentee for the first time on Friday, October 6th. The high school students plan to meet with their mentee every Friday morning until the end of April. The first morning was spent getting to know each other and playing games. All students, both elementary and high, had a great time and are looking forward to the next visit. We are so proud of our high school students who committed to being mentors to our future Tigers. They sacrificially give their time early before school on Fridays to help make a difference in the lives of these younger students.
World Mental Health Day: October 10th
“Our minds, our rights"
World Mental Health Day 2023 is an opportunity for people and communities to unite behind the theme ‘Mental health is a universal human right” to improve knowledge, raise awareness and drive actions that promote and protect everyone’s mental health as a universal human right.
Mental health is a basic human right for all people. Everyone, whoever and wherever they are, has a right to the highest attainable standard of mental health. This includes the right to be protected from mental health risks, the right to available, accessible, acceptable, and good quality care, and the right to liberty, independence and inclusion in the community.
Good mental health is vital to our overall health and well-being. Yet one in eight people globally are living with mental health conditions, which can impact their physical health, their well-being, how they connect with others, and their livelihoods. Mental health conditions are also affecting an increasing number of adolescents and young people.
Having a mental health condition should never be a reason to deprive a person of their human rights or to exclude them from decisions about their own health. Yet all over the world, people with mental health conditions continue to experience a wide range of human rights violations. Many are excluded from community life and discriminated against, while many more cannot access the mental health care they need or can only access care that violates their human rights.
WHO continues to work with its partners to ensure mental health is valued, promoted, and protected, and that urgent action is taken so that everyone can exercise their human rights and access the quality mental health care they need. Join the World Mental Health Day 2023 campaign to learn more about your basic right to mental health as well as how to protect the rights of others.

More about mental health
How is mental health awareness day celebrated around the world?
World Mental Health Day is celebrated every year on 10 October. On this day and throughout the month of October, the Mental Health Strategy Team and system-wide partners will carry out a series of events and activities focused on this year's theme, “Mental Health in an Unequal World'.
Celebrate World Mental Health Day!
We can all celebrate World Mental Health Day by committing to making mental health and wellbeing for all a global priority. Let’s continue to take action toward improving the mental wellbeing of our communities, starting with ourselves. To celebrate today, consider:
Doing a random act of kindness, which has proven emotional benefits and can help strengthen social ties and one’s sense of community.
Making a coffee or tea date with a friend or loved one to connect and enjoy quality time together.
Taking a moment to practice gratitude, which can improve mental health and boost relationships with others.
Remember to tag us @MentalHealthFirstAidUSA when posting on Facebook and Instagram, and @MHFirstAidUSA when posting on Twitter. If you enjoyed learning about mental wellbeing this October and want to get more involved, be sure to subscribe to our monthly newsletter and the new MHFA Digest to get the latest MHFA blogs, news and updates delivered directly to your inbox.
Thank you for choosing to #BeTheDifference on this World Mental Health Day — and every day!
101 Coping Skills for Teens
Seasonal Affective Disorder
From the NATIONAL INSTITUTE of MENTAL HEALTH
What is seasonal affective disorder? Many people go through short periods of time where they feel sad or not like their usual selves. Sometimes, these mood changes begin and end when the seasons change. People may start to feel “down” when the days get shorter in the fall and winter (also called “winter blues”) and begin to feel better in the spring, with longer daylight hours. In some cases, these mood changes are more serious and can affect how a person feels, thinks, and handles daily activities. If you have noticed significant changes in your mood and behavior whenever the seasons change, you may be suffering from seasonal affective disorder (SAD), a type of depression. In most cases, SAD symptoms start in the late fall or early winter and go away during the spring and summer; this is known as winter-pattern SAD or winter depression. Some people may experience depressive episodes during the spring and summer months; this is called summer-pattern SAD or summer depression and is less common. What are the signs and symptoms of SAD? SAD is not considered a separate disorder but is a type of depression characterized by its recurrent seasonal pattern, with symptoms lasting about 4 to 5 months per year.
