FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK
Dear Edison Families,
Get ready for a book extravaganza! Our Fall Book Fair has burst onto the scene, and we couldn’t be more thrilled for our community to dive into the excitement! Watch as our library transforms into a magical book wonderland, brimming with titles that will spark imaginations and ignite a passion for reading.
We’re featuring an amazing selection of books in both English and Spanish, courtesy of Scholastic, along with a special collection from La Libreria—a local gem run by former Edison parents!
Mark your calendars for our fair hours: Monday through Friday, 8-9am and 1-5:30pm. Just a heads up—if we don’t have enough volunteers, some time slots might close, so consider signing up to help out here.
If you would like to donate books to your child's class, there will be teacher wish lists at the fair to let you know which books your teacher is eager to add to his/her library.
Want to make your shopping even easier? Visit our Scholastic Book Fair website here to browse the collection and set up an ewallet, so your child can shop without carrying cash!
Don’t miss out on this literary adventure!
Warm regards,
Directora Ipiña
SCHOOL ANNOUNCEMENTS
Tuesday is Picture Day!
Wednesday Parent Meetings
Each Wednesday, from 8:30-10:00 am, we have parent meetings in the Library. All parents are invited. Meetings are bilingual and there is a Zoom option at this link (although in person attendance is recommended). The meeting types are as follows:
1st Wednesday: Coffee with the Principal and Experts
2nd Wednesday: English Learner Advisory Council
3rd Wednesday: PTA General Meeting
4th Wednesday: Parent Cafecito
This upcoming week we will be hosting our first ELAC (English Learner Advisory Council) in the Computer Lab (because the library will be occupied by the Book Fair). ELAC is a parent group designed for parents of English Learners who advise the school on ways we can better support their students. They also participate in trainings that help them better support their student at home. Only students of English Learners can vote, but the meetings are open to all parents. The meetings are run in Spanish, but translation is available as needed.
Arrival and Dismissal Tips
Attention Parents Driving to School!
There are NO PARKING signs on both sides of Kansas this week. If you are not already doing it, we recommend leaving a few minutes early and parking at Virginia Avenue Park.
Let Us Know if Someone Different Will PIck Up!
If your child will be picked up by someone different than usual, email both the teacher and Melina in the office (melinagarcia@smmusd.org). If you are running late or there is a last minute change, then call the office so we can communicate to the teacher. We are still getting to know all of our regular pick up faces and want to know what to expect.
District Music: Start Dates & Back To School Night
4th and 5th graders have begun district music classes. They have music class on Mondays and Fridays. 3rd graders have classes on Mondays only. Make sure students bring their instruments on music days.
Please note there is a staggered start to music. See dates below:
- Mon 9/9 no music classes
- Fri 9/13 4th and 5th grade only
- Mon 9/16 3rd grade only; no 4th and 5th grade
- Friday 9/20 4th and 5th only
- Monday 9/23 regular music schedule (3rd grade every Monday, 4th and 5th grade every Monday AND Friday)
There will be a Back to School Night for our music program on Tuesday and Wednesday this week from 6-8pm. It is the same presentation both nights so you only need to attend one night. The zoom link for the meeting is below:
STAR Testing
The STAR Testing Window will close at the end of the week. Here are the tests student will take by grade level:
- K: Early Literacy in Spanish
- 1st: Early Literacy in Spanish or (if students scored over 852 last year) Reading and Math in Spanish
- 2nd: Reading and Math in Spanish, Reading in English
- 3rd-5th: Reading and Math in English, Reading in Spanish
Parents can view results in Aeries under Test Scores. Remember these are national percentile rankings. The 50%tile is average. Scores above 50 that are above average, scores below 50 are below average. These scores and more about your child's achievement will be discussed during Parent Teacher Conferences at the beginning of November.
Fill Out the Free and Reduced Lunch Application
VERY IMPORTANT!
Even though food is free at school, we need all families who think they may qualify to fill out the free and reduced lunch application in order to determine if our school will receive Federal funding under Title I. Last school year we did not get enough applicants and we missed out on $200,000 to spend at Edison. In addition to helping the school, families who qualify will get access to scholarships and special opportunities. APPLICATIONS ARE DUE BY OCTOBER 4.
