Notes from the Principal
In athletics, winter sports have come to a close with the exceptions of boys' swimming and boys' basketball. Boys' basketball will take on Martinsville in the first round of sectional 3/3 and swimming took 6 individuals to State competition this past Saturday. Jackson Ketcham (Medley relay, 200 free, and 500 free), John Crawley (diving), Nick Weber (50 free and Medley relay), Matt Badinghaus (Medley relay), and Owen Matthew (Medley relay). Sports that have completed their respective seasons: Kyra Hall (100 back) advanced to State again this year in girls' swimming and finished 12th in the 100 back. Our wrestlers were conference, sectional, and regional champions, advancing 11 to semi-state. Kole Viel and Bryer Hall advanced to State competition and Bryer finished as State runner-up at 152 lbs. Girls' basketball won their first sectional since 1992 advancing to the elite 8 finishing their season 23-6...the best record in school history. It's been a great winter in athletics and we look forward to continued success this spring.
FFA had their District 12 Contests this past weekend at South Decatur High School placing several firsts qualifying these students for State. FCCLA travels to Muncie this week to compete in their State level competitions. We wish them luck and look forward to sharing more of their continued tradition of success in April.
This spring brought with it the ISSMA circuit with both choir and band students competing. Both band and choir advanced several to state competition earning several golds more specifics can be found in the music portion of our newsletter. IMEA All-State Choir included nine of ECs finest. EC Dancers are in the midst of their competitive season hosting a State level competition this weekend. Winter Percussion/Guard represented this past weekend at Greenfield Central High School. The Marching Trojans will again be a part of the Findley Market Opening Day Parade over Spring Break.
FCCLA attended, competed, and shined once again at this year's State Convention bringing home Largest Chapter Award and Gold Honor Chapter Award. In competition they earned 21 gold medals, 14 silver, and 6 bronze medals, qualifying 31 students for National Competition this summer. Additionally, Maria Deddens was named State President and Haley Lewis was named State Vice President of Community Service.
Lastly, as the year continues we will keep striving...
- to make connections,
- to provide the best opportunities for our students,
- and perhaps most importantly, to offer a safe and secure school environment where your child/student can grow and thrive as an academic and as a person.
WE ARE...EC!

Notes from Guidance
Scheduling process for the 2020-2021 school year.
April: Students will receive schedules for 2020-2021.
May 28th: Last day of school and last day to change schedules for 2020-2021.
Spring Break is an excellent time to consider college visits and job shadowing opportunities without impacting attendance. Students can contact colleges to schedule visits directly with admissions.
Key items per grade:
Seniors:
Remember, the FAFSA is now open until the April 15th deadline for Indiana. Students should follow up with counselors with admission issues or concerns and they will assist with contacting colleges with questions particular to the students’ needs.
Counselors are available to assist students with college questions and appeal processes for admission if needed. In the month of May counselors will share with seniors how to send final transcripts from East Central, Ivy Tech. and IU to their selected college. We will also be gathering information for plans after graduation and scholarships that they have been selected for so we can recognize them.
April 8th at 6:30 pm in the Performing Arts Center is the National Honor Society program for Senior recognition and Junior induction. Senior Scholarship Awards program will be held on May 20th at 6:30 pm in the Performing Arts Center. Invitations for both events are given to students who need to attend prior to the event.
Juniors:
SAT and ACT testing dates are linked below for reference. Juniors need to make sure that SAT and/or ACT testing is completed this year so they can apply to colleges upon the start of their senior year. Certain schools (UC, IU, Purdue, Miami Oxford, NCAA) require that test scores be sent directly from the testing center to be official and for applications to be complete.
April 8th at 6:30 pm in the Performing Arts Center is the National Honor Society program for Senior recognition and Junior induction. Juniors who have achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher will be invited and inducted into the National Honor Society.
Sophomores and Freshman:
Scheduling has been completed and students have met individually with their counselor. Students can still change schedules until the last day of school.
As always we are available to meet with students individually to support academic and emotional needs. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions or concerns.

This niche group meets in Mrs. Tucker’s room on Thursdays from 3:00 to 4:00 to learn to knit (or crochet or any craft at all). The group is the brainchild of freshman Maddy Bishop. One day she casually asked Mrs. Tucker to teach her to knit. Mrs. Tucker replied that she has tried to teach students to knit in the past with little to no success. Maddy said that she was highly motivated to learn, so Mrs. Tucker agreed. The first meeting happened on November 21, 2019, with just teacher and student present. To say that it was a success is an understatement. Maddy picked up knitting like she was born with needles in her hands. Soon others heard about the group and joined the fun. We look forward to lots of fun and crafting in the days to come!

Fine Arts
Melissa Gulasy - mgulasy@sunmandearborn.k12.in.us
Showcasing the artwork of a very talented student here at East Central is Kyle Krumen. This is Kyle’s second year of taking drawing. The drawing below is a self-portrait with a “Surrealist approach”. Kyle has the unique ability to create individuality, technique, and elaboration of surface detail. Kyle plans to submit this drawing in the Southeastern Indiana Art Guild Show next month. This art show showcases works from all the local high schools in Southeastern Indiana.
Other art news, Katie Priebe, Kyla Mattingly, and Megan Bauer have worked collaboratively to incorporate ideas, sketches, and artistic contributions to create a school mural in room 111 (in English hallway). They were engaged in this opportunity to communicate through their drawing and painting skills to create an environment that creates beauty, tranquility, and uplift the space. This room will provide an alternative learning environment for students to collaborate and do their work. The large scale painting (18 ft. long) is a validation of the type of talented students we have here at East Central!! Stop down at this room and see how this project is transforming in the weeks to come. More photos to come as this project progresses.
Foreign Language
The Japanese club members and Japanese class students went on a field trip to Japan America Society of Indiana (JASI) in Indianapolis to see the Japanese tea ceremony called Cha no Yu or Sado. After the ceremony, they went to a Japanese grocery store, One World, to get Japanese foods and small items.
The tea ceremony presentation was composed of three sections: presentation of the history, demonstration on how to make tea, and the actual practice of making and drinking tea. The students enjoyed the event and were excited about the actual customs they experienced. After the event, they went to the grocery store to eat lunch and see a variety of Japanese foods and products.
It is not easy for the students to experience this level of Japanese culture. The students had a great time. I would like to say thank you to Mrs. Jennifer Pennington. She came up with the idea of this trip and set up the date and scheduled it.
Math
As we wrap up this 3rd quarter, the math classes are preparing for their Common Assessments in Algebra I, Algebra II, and Geometry. Good luck to all students in those courses!
This month I would like to introduce our next instructional aide - Robin Salyers.
Hi, my name is Robin Salyers and this is my second year at East Central High School. Last year I was an instructional aide in the Special Education Room, and this year I have been assisting in the Math and English classrooms. I help with Geometry (Mrs. Noeth), Algebra (Mr. Loveless), and English 11. Math was always my favorite subject in school, so I'm happy to be working in the Math Department!
I am the proud mother of six children. My oldest is 23 and my youngest is 7. They all have names that begin with D, which often leaves me tongue tied! In my spare time I love to cook, bake, garden, and take care of my 15 chickens and 3 ducks. I am also a diehard Cincinnati Bengals and Cincinnati Reds fan.
Thank you Mrs. Salyers for introducing yourself and working with our students. We are glad to have you as a part of our E.C. family! If you see Mrs. Salyers in the hallway, be sure to say “Hi!” and “Thank you!” for all that she does to support students here at E. C.!
Music

Congratulations to the choir department for their outstanding performances at the ISSMA District and State Solo and Ensemble Competition. Students presented 45 events at the district level with 30 moving on to the state. State results were 10 gold with distinction, 18 gold and 2 silver. Outstanding performances!
Theater:
The drama club will present the musical NEWSIES the weekend of March 13th-15th. Show times are 7:00p Friday and Saturday, 3:00p on Sunday. Come out and see this amazing cast perform this beloved show.
PE/Health
ECHS Physical Education classes monitor heart rate during exercise. By monitoring heart rate individuals can assess if they are working in their target heart rate range and make adjustments to ensure they are effectively conditioning their heart. February is recognized as American Heart Month. American Heart Month, a federally designated event, is an ideal time to remind Americans to focus on their hearts and encourage them to get their families, friends and communities involved.
The first American Heart Month, which took place in February 1964, was proclaimed by President Lyndon B. Johnson via Proclamation 3566 on December 30, 1963. Congress, by joint resolution on that date, has requested the President to issue annually a proclamation designating February as American Heart Month. While American Heart Month is a federally designated month in the United States, it’s important to realize that cardiovascular disease knows no borders. www.heart.org
Science
Tim Maluvac - tmaluvac@sunmandearborn.k12.in.us
Earth Science students finished construction on their buildings and were excited to test them on the earthquake simulator. Students designed, drafted, and constructed these buildings and made modifications as needed to create a seismic-safe structure that could withstand a simulated earthquake. Each structure also had to hold 5 weighted metal plates that simulated a 20-story, 200-foot high building! Students gained time management and teamwork skills and also developed a real understanding of exactly what goes into engineering seismic-safe buildings.
Select students in advanced biology courses took part in the Beacon Cadaver Lab instructed by Dr. David Argo. The students were instructed on basic anatomical structures of the upper and lower leg. In the lab, they observed suturing and arthroscopic surgery techniques, that they were then given a chance to perform on the cadaver limbs, under the supervision of Dr. Argo and his physician assistants. After the lab experience, the students were afforded the opportunity to have a question and answer session with Dr. Argo and his staff, about the lab itself and the ins and outs of becoming a medical professional.
Social Studies
In the Social Studies department, Mr. Stonefield's Economics class is covering the law of supply and demand. In Mr. Lewis' World History class the students are learning about the Renaissance and the Scientific Revolution. In Mr. Owen's AP European History class, the students had the first experience with the teaching style of case method instruction.
