NEWS FROM WERNER
Note from the Principal
We just completed our first full week with students! Our students are getting the routines down and making friends. With the temperatures being hot, we encourage you to have your child dress in light clothing and bring a water bottle to stay hydrated.
This week, you may have seen the communication from PSD regarding the importance of attendance. While we realize illness and other family emergencies can not be prevented, we appreciate you making efforts to minimize how much time your child misses from school. Research shows that students who attend school regularly perform better academically and are more likely to graduate from high school than students who are chronically absent (defined as missing 10% or more of school days, excused or not). If you have questions or needs with this area, please let me know.
In this newsletter, check out the spirit gear opportunity from our PTA and you'll see more information regarding volunteering at Werner.
Have a great weekend with your family!
Best,
Hayden Camp
Principal
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
- Arrival Time- We are asking for your help in ensuring that students do not arrive before 8:45 am. We do not have supervision available until then. If your child needs before/after school care, you can sign up for AlphaBEST.
- Safety Drills- Safety is our top priority. Next week, we will begin practicing safety drills to help build awareness and support for our students. We are required to practice Evacuations drills, monthly, and Lockdown drills three times a year. Our teachers will work closely with students to support them and build routines. We will be communicating with an email after we have completed these drills. For more information of Safety and Security, in PSD, go the district website: https://www.psdschools.org/schools/safety-security.
- Safety Reminders- This is friendly reminder that everyone needs to enter and check in at the main office. When you check in, you will be required to provide a govt.-issued ID (e.g. driver's license). You will be given a lanyard for identification. When you leave, you will need to check out through the main office and return your lanyard.
- Spirit Gear- Our wonderful PTA has set up one stop shopping for spirit gear and PTA membership on the website, Givebacks. See the attached flier or go to this link.
- Pets on School Grounds- While we love our furry friends, we ask that you keep your pets at home or wait with them off school grounds. We have some students with allergies or fear of dogs, and we want to keep them safe. Service dogs are allowable with permission from admin. Thanks for your help with this!
- Volunteering and Needs- Please see the communication down below regarding volunteers and current needs.
- Back-to-School Orientations- In the next few weeks, out teachers will be hosting their orientations to help build awareness of your child's classroom and what they will be learning this year. These are important opportunities to connect with your child's teacher and ask questions. These sessions are for parents/guardians only and there is no child care available.
- New Family Orientation- If you missed the New Family Orientation, here is the slide presentation. If you have any questions, please email Mr. Camp (hcamp@psdschools.org).
Odyssey of the Mind - If your student is interested in a fun and creative team challenge, attend the OM informational night on September 18 from 6-7pm in the Media Center. See the Info flyer and Problem synopses overview for more details. If you have questions, contact Butterscotch Culhane at bculhane@psdschools.org
Room Parents and Volunteers
One of the cornerstones of success, for our school, are our volunteers. Our volunteers help support instructional and clerical needs, supervise on field trips, and help plan fun parties for our classrooms. Our volunteers help in so many ways to support classrooms and our whole school.
Over the course of the coming weeks, teachers will be recruiting Room Parents to help support the coordination of their volunteer needs. If you are interested in supporting your child’s teacher with this, please submit this form by August 30. Our Room Parents also help support as a point person for needs from the PTA when coordination with classrooms is necessary.
If you are only interested in serving as a volunteer, stay tuned for communication from your child’s teacher in the future. As we have building-wide needs, we will send out communication and post on our Werner website: https://wer.psdschools.org/about-us/volunteers.
All volunteers must be registered through PSD. This is required for even one day of volunteering. If you have not registered, please go to the PSD website: https://www.psdschools.org/community/volunteers.
Thanks for your support of Werner!
CURRENT WERNER VOLUNTEER NEEDS
Classroom Volunteer Needs will communicated by teachers in the future. We do have some school volunteer needs for now. If you are interested in helping support in any of these areas, please email Mr. Camp (hcamp@psdschools.org).
- Garden Help- Do you enjoy gardening? We are in need of volunteers to help support the maintenance of our front garden. If you are interested, please email Mr. Camp (hcamp@psdschools.org).
- DAB (District Advisory Board) Representative Needed- The District Advisory Board advises the district on a number of issues and is made up of parent representatives from each school and acts as a link between the community and the district. If you are interested, please email Mr. Camp (hcamp@psdschools.org).
- SAC (School Accountability Committee) Representatives Needed- Our SAC meets about 4-6 times each year to discuss school improvement efforts. School Accountability Committees (SAC), which are made up of parents and staff, offer guidance on academic action plans, budget priorities, safety issues and other areas. If you are interested, please email Mr. Camp (hcamp@psdschools.org).
Student Data Verification
At the beginning of every school year, we ask parents to review and update their student and family information online through ParentVUE.
Family Data Verification is a feature within ParentVUE that allows parents and guardians with active students to update their students’ demographic, health, parent contact information, emergency contact information, and upload documents to submit to their students’ school.
Once logged into ParentVUE, click on the Online Registration / Data Verification tab on the top right-hand corner of the screen and select the 2024-2025 Current Student and Family Data Verification process from the drop-down menu. Please review and update the information and finish by submitting your student’s data verification.
Code of Conduct
Each year, we ask our parents/guardians to provide a digital acknowledgment after reviewing the updated Student Rights and Code of Conduct, which is a compilation of rules, policies, and regulations regarding student behavior.
The 2024-25 Code of Conduct is now available on the PSD website in multiple languages.
Steps to complete your digital acknowledgment:
Parents/guardians -
Log into the ParentVUE parent portal.
Read the Acknowledgement text box.
Click on the link at the bottom of the page to download the 2024-2025 Code of Conduct.
Write your name on the signature field exactly as it appears on your ParentVUE account.
Click “Yes.”
Parents/guardians will not be given access to ParentVUE until they electronically sign the acknowledgment.
Families new to PSD or those who have never accessed their ParentVUE account will receive a separate email with instructions for how to log into ParentVUE.
If you have questions regarding ParentVUE or StudentVUE, see the ParentVUE FAQ or contact our main office (970-488-5550).
School Lunch and Fee Payment Information
Paying for school fees and/or lunches is easy using SchoolPay. Below is the link for signing your student up, paying fees and/or adding funds to your student’s meal account.
PSD offers an easy and secure way to make payments to your child’s school on-line with a credit/debit card for fees and other charges as well as your child’s meal account through the District’s payment portal, SchoolPay.* The Pay Fees/Charges web page has information and instructions on paying fees and other charges online or go directly to the SchoolPay website.
Fees may also be paid in person at your child's school, paying with cash or check.
2024-2025 Werner Photo Album
Throughout the year, we ask our community for photos that could be used for our yearbook and/or social media. This relates to school events only (e.g. classroom parties, field trips, school events, spirit days and enrichment opportunities). You can upload pictures to our 2024-2025 Werner Photo Album throughout the year. Please be mindful to not include photos of students that may not have permission.

NEWS FROM PSD
Attendance Message from PSD
Aug. 19, 2024
Dear Poudre School District community:
We hope you’ve had an excellent start to the new school year and have been able to join your teachers and classmates every school day so far. It’s important to make and keep good attendance habits from the very first day of school to have a successful year.
Students who attend school regularly perform better academically and are more likely to graduate from high school than students who are chronically absent (defined as missing 10% or more of school days, excused or not). Unfortunately, one in three Colorado students are chronically absent, according to the Colorado Department of Education.
PSD has a goal of 95% average daily attendance. While a goal of 100% attendance doesn’t leave space for occasional student illness, going to school 95% or more of the time helps students stay on track with their schoolwork and feel more connected with staff, peers, and activities at school, which has positive impacts on student mental health and belonging.
Absences can add up quickly and negatively impact a student’s progress. Missing just a couple days each month means a child is losing out on more than 10% of in-class learning. To help families track absences and offer support, schools will send parents and guardians a letter if their child passes the following thresholds:
- Absent 10% or more of school days so far in the school year
- Absent 15% or more of school days so far in a school year
- Absent 25% or more of school days so far in a school year
These percentages account for both excused and unexcused absences. Unexcused absences are days missed for any reason not listed in the excused absence list in the Student Code of Conduct (page 11). Leaving school for vacations, work (outside of a work-study program under school supervision), or appointments that can take place outside of school hours/have not been pre-approved by a school administrator are examples of unexcused absences for a student.
Parents and guardians will also receive letters if their child becomes habitually truant by having four or more unexcused absences in one month or 10 or more unexcused absences in a year.
PSD staff want to be partners with families in getting students to class. Please contact your school if you have questions or need attendance support.
Sincerely,
Poudre School District
Volunteers are needed across Poudre School District to support our Teachers & Students!
PSD sends frequent emails to currently registered volunteers, but those are getting lost in some recipients' junk mail folders. If you are registered as a volunteer with PSD, please check your junk mail & mark those sent by "Volunteer Coordinator" as safe to receive.
For those who are not yet registered to volunteer but want to help in our schools please visit - Volunteer Registration
PSD Now Newsletter
One of many ways information is shared is through the PSD Now community newsletter, which features timely information about the latest happenings in the district. This is emailed to families and interested community members about every other Thursday.
