IMMS Family Flier
November 3, 2024
A Note from Ms. Thomas and Mr. Jondle
Dear Indian Mound Middle School Students and Families,
This past week, the 7th-grade students participated in a virtual author study with Kwame Alexander and Jason Reynolds, two outstanding voices in contemporary literature. It aligns perfectly with our school-wide goals to foster a love for reading and strengthen literacy skills. It was such a terrific experience for our learners. Ask your 7th grader what they learned :). We are looking forward to our Courage retreat this coming week, as well.
Many things are underway at IMMS this week. Boys basketball has begun, the practice for the musical is in full affect and many of our other clubs have been meeting weekly for several weeks now. Be sure to check out our daily announcements for updates.
In this week's Family Flier, you will find info on:
- Important Dates
- Swim Unit
- Arrival and dismissal remiders

Thank you again for your continued support and involvement in our school community. We look forward to continuing our journey together!
Warm regards,

Veteran's Day (Nov. 11)
This week and next Monday, IMMS will be observing Veterans Day, and we’d like to recognize the Veterans within our school family. If you or someone in your family or circle of friends is a Veteran, we encourage you to talk about their service at home and encourage them to share their experiences during ARRE time this week. Students will also have the chance to create a STAR during ARRE time to honor any Veterans they know.
At our upcoming Monthly Celebration Assembly, we’ll have a representative from the American Legion joining us to speak with our students. As part of their social studies curriculum, 8th graders will dive deeper into the significance of Veterans Day, with a visit to the American Legion to view the flags at the Memorial. Additionally, we’ll introduce the annual American Legion writing contest to our 8th graders, giving them an opportunity to express their appreciation for our nation’s Veterans.

Arrival and Dismissal Logistics' Reminders
Please read the quick reminders about arrival and dismissal procedures. Please also discuss this with your child/children.
Arrival:
- Timing: Students may enter IMMS no earlier than 7:55am, but are encouraged to arrive by 8:15am.
- Students who arrive between 7:55am-8:15am may use the gym, use the cafeteria (and have breakfast!), or go to Homework Club.
- Classes start at 8:20am, with the first bell ringing at 8:15am.
- Traffic Flow:
- Please pull all the way forward and use the entire IMMS side of the driveway down to the end of the gym before stopping so more students can drop off at the same time.
- Students should exit the vehicle on the IMMS side of the parking lot (right passenger side of vehicle).
- Other Tips: Consider dropping off your child[ren] by McFarland High School, at the MHS PAC/Pool location, or at the bottom of the hill on Exchange Street and have your child walk up the path to IMMS.
Dismissal from IMMS
- Timing: Students will be dismissed at 3:30pm.
- Traffic Flow: Just like drop off, families will use half of the IMMS driveway loop for student pick up (buses use the half closest to the IMMS Main Entrance).
- Please pull all the way forward and use the IMMS side of the driveway from the curb by the gym entrance (B Doors) down to the bottom of the driveway at Exchange Street so more students can be picked up at the same time.
- Safety Reminders
- Students should not cross the parking lot to get into their car; students should only enter their car on the IMMS school side of the parking lot
- Students should only enter the car on the IMMS school side of the parking lot once the car is stopped.
- Students should enter their vehicle on the right passenger side of the car to avoid stepping intopotential bus/vehicle traffic.
- Other Tips: Consider dropping off your child[ren] by McFarland High School, at the MHS PAC/Pool location, or at the bottom of the hill on Exchange Street and have your child walk up the path to IMMS. Consider picking up your child closer to 3:35pm or 3:40pm as traffic will have dissipated by that time.
Thank you again for all of your support and understanding during these times. As you know, our main objective is to keep everyone’s safety at the forefront of all we do!

Hair tie for long hair is preferred
Goggles are optional but encouraged
Lotion is optional but encouraged
Outdoor Recess and Weather
As the weather continues to cool down and the seasons change, we wanted to provide a few reminders that we will/have been sharing with your scholar:
- Students should take their coats/sweatshirts/hats with them to lunch to avoid having to have to go to their locker/backpacks after being dismissed from lunch to recess
- To allow students the chance to eat at their own pace, there are two waves of dismissal from lunches. The first wave of dismissal happens 15 minutes into lunch (for those who are finished and want to get outside right away). The second wave of dismissal occurs twenty minutes into lunch (lunch/recess is thirty minutes total).
- The expectation is that at this point, all students must go outside for recess. Please continue to encourage this with your scholar

Health Services
Pneumonia on the Rise
Per WI DHS Mycoplasma pneumonia (M. pneumoniae or walking pneumonia) activity is increasing nationwide and in Wisconsin. Every three to seven years an increase in M. pneumoniae cases are identified in the United States. People of all ages are at risk for getting M. pneumoniae infection, but it is most common among young adults and school-aged children. There is no vaccine to prevent M. pneumoniae infection. For moderate to severe cases, antibiotic therapy can be prescribed by a clinician. Please view the CDC website for additional information and resources. If you have a cough, fever, run down/extremely tired, difficulty/painful breathing we recommend that you contact your healthcare provider.
Please review our Guidelines for sending your child to school. Remember, if your child is sick please keep them home and seek medical evaluation as needed. Students will be sent home with the following symptoms:
Temperature above 100.4°F
Vomiting or diarrhea
Frequent uncontrollable cough
Your child should remain at home until fever, vomiting/diarrhea has stopped for 24 hours without the use of medication. If they have been prescribed antibiotics, please see the MSD Health Services Handbook and DHS Wisconsin Childhood Communicable Disease guidelines for when they may return to school. As well, please notify the School/Health Office if your student has tested positive for a communicable disease such as: Influenza/Flu, Covid 19, Pneumonia, Strep Throat, RSV, Hand Foot & Mouth, Pertussis, etc.
Thank you for your partnership as we work to keep our students and staff healthy and safe each day!

McFarland School District Awarded 2024-25 Sparks Grant for Community Inclusion
The Wisconsin Board for People with Developmental Disabilities (WI-BPDD) has awarded the McFarland School District a 2024-25 Sparks grant to enhance community connections and inclusion for people with disabilities. Sparks grants fund efforts that create meaningful social connections, help organizations build inclusive programs, and encourage community members to develop a greater understanding of people with disabilities.
The McFarland School District, in collaboration with McFarland Recreation, Aquatics, and Play, will establish a local advisory board that includes people with disabilities, their families, and community members. The advisory board will offer input on recreational activities, ensuring they are more welcoming and accessible, and it will guide the creation of accessible resources, including an updated brochure, website, and registration process. Planned programming includes expanding activities for all ages, with a focus on those under three and over 18. This grant will ultimately enhance programming, improve access to adaptive equipment, and engage the entire community. More information is available at WI-BPDD’s website.
