One School, One Book Kick-Off
It was wonderful to be back at school with everyone this week! The students have quickly settled back into school routines, but the cold weather snap has kept us inside all week (good thing it was a warm Christmas break). We had an exciting start to the week with the revealing of the two books we are reading as a school community; we hope everyone is enjoying the books so far, and there will be some great discussions about the books in the coming weeks.
As we settle into January, there are a number of activities and much learning going on around the school. Our staff continuously adds information to the PowerSchool portal for parents to access information on how their children are achieving in class. If you need help accessing this information anytime, please don't hesitate to contact the office.
Greater St. Albert Catholic Schools values your opinion. As part of our Assurance process, please share your perspective through our Division Assurance Survey at the link: Legal Assurance Survey 2024 - Parent. This helps us plan for the upcoming school year.
Students in Grades 4-9 will complete the survey and provide feedback over the next few weeks.
Thanks for all your support in our focus on learning and engagement at Legal School.
Blessings to all for a wonderful week!

Teaching Your Child to Be a Good Listener
When children and teens have difficulties with active listening, it can impact how they do at school, their relationships, extracurricular activities and more. Just like emotional regulation, active listening is an important life skill. When you’re talking with your child, model active listening by:
Putting away your phone
Looking them in the eye and really being there in the conversation
Repeating back what they say: “So it sounds like you’re saying…”
Asking questions to understand better
When we listen to our children, it makes them feel important and respected. When they feel valued in this way, they’re more likely to listen attentively and respectfully in return. This creates a positive cycle of communication which makes your interactions more pleasant and productive. To dive deeper, find a relaxed moment and talk with your child or teen about what it means to listen.
Check out this week’s tip from Big Life Journal about the ways we can teach our children to be good listeners.

One School, One Book - The Lemonade War (Elem) & Crossover (JH)
Our school is excited to participate in this special, community-wide shared reading event. Every family received a copy of the same book and will be asked to read it together at home over the next four to five weeks.
Reading aloud at home is valuable because it better prepares your child to be an effective reader, and it is also a fun, worthwhile family activity. With this program, we aim to build a Community of Readers at our school. Everyone – students, parents, teachers, and even administrative staff – will be following along together.
We hope you’ll enjoy this special reading time with your children. When a whole school reads a book, there’s a lot to talk about. With your help, we can build a Community of Readers at our school.
We would like to especially thank the Friends of Legal School Society (FOLSS) for the funds to purchase the books in our One School One Book Project and for helping provide the financial support to make this project possible.
Attached below are the reading schedules for the books. We will have some great draws for prizes based on trivia questions from the books and class and group discussions about the books. Watch for weekly winners.
Division Assurance Survey
Greater St. Albert Catholic Schools values your opinion. As part of our Assurance process, please share your perspective through our Division Assurance Survey at the link or QR code below. This survey will inform planning and decisions at the school and divisional levels for the 2024/2025 school year.
Surveys are completely anonymous.
Families with children at more than one GSACRD school are asked to complete a survey for each site.
The survey will remain open from Wednesday, January 11, 2024, to Friday, February, 2, 2024.
If you have a child in grade 4-9, you may receive a similar survey from Alberta Education later. If so, we would encourage you to complete both surveys.
We thank you in advance for sharing your feedback; your time is appreciated.
