KMS WEEKLY UPDATE
A NOTE FROM NURSE AMBER
KMS Families,
At KMS we strive to create a strong learning environment for our students. One critical component of this is a healthy diet. Over the past several weeks our team has noticed that many students are choosing not to eat breakfast, or lunch, and therefore are missing the vital fuel needed for a successful school day.
Nutrition is an essential part of brain growth and body development. When your child chooses not to eat, they are not properly equipping themself to learn. Their brains and bodies need food for energy!
In addition, children over age 12 are at a higher risk of developing eating disorders. Encouraging students to eat healthy and balanced meals helps reinforce a positive relationship with food. We strongly encourage parents to discuss the importance of eating throughout the day with their children at home.
Please review the daily lunch menu with your student. If they do not wish to eat a school-provided lunch, we ask that you supply them with a healthy meal they will enjoy for sustained energy throughout the day.
If you have any questions or need support, please feel free to contact me.
Thank you!

ATTENDANCE LINE:
Please use this option to let us know that your child is going to be absent, lat, or if youa re picking them up early. This is OPTION 1 when calling the school at 907-486-7460.
We check the voicemails every hour.
CHECKING STUDENTS OUT:
Please call in the morning to let us know that you will be checking your student out early. Press the attendance line (OPTION 1) to leave a message. A pass will be given to your student so they can be ready when you arrive. You will come to the front entrance, ring the bell, and sign them out in the office.
DROPPING OFF LUNCH/ITEMS TO STUDENTS:
Please be sure to drop off lunch to students PRIOR to their lunch time.
When dropping off any items to students, please do so BEFORE the class they need it, and we will call them to the front office during passing period.
This is where we will have a quick reference for the upcoming week. More info is usually listed lower in the newsletter, if needed.

STUDENT SHOUT OUTS
During the course of the school day, teachers and staff like to recognize students who are caught exhibiting the KMS values of Respect, Integrity, Citizenship, and Kindness. We do this by giving out Grizzly Tickets. Every Grizzly Ticket goes into a bucket and from that bucket, we draw two winners per grade. The winners get to sit on the stage with up to 7 of their friends for the rest of the week!
THIS WEEK'S GRIZZLY TICKET WINNERS:
6th grade:

Table 2- Aimee Beltran for Kindness
Alex Perez for Integrity
7th grade:

6TH GRADE UPDATES
MRS. LHOTKA'S SKILLS DEVELOPMENT CLASS
Ms. Lhotka’s and Mr. Chito’s Skills Development classes will be going to the Kodiak History Museum on Wed., Nov. 29th and Thurs., Nov. 30th to learn about Kodiak Alutiiq history and culture.
The Kodiak History Museum provides a timeline of Kodiak's history and several temporary exhibits.
We will walk to and from the museum downtown.
Thank you for supporting our efforts to learn more about what Kodiak has to offer our students!
In case of questions or concerns, please contact Ms. Lhotka at (907) 486-7460 or flhotka01@kibsd.org
8TH GRADE UPDATES
8th grade ELA students have finished off The Outsiders and are moving into a more writing-intensive unit on argumentative essays. In a couple weeks they should have a rough draft or some other form of an essay to show you.
Until then, maybe stimulate their reasoning by getting into an argument with them? Just kidding!
