Middleton Update
Middleton Elementary | September 15, 2023
It was another wonderful week filled with lots of learning and fun. This week, some of our 5th graders participated in Camp Middleton. Students worked together to build tents and used them as learning spaces. This is just one example of all of the fun-filled activities of this week. We hope you have a great weekend and enjoy the sunshine.
With appreciation,
Mili Wilkinson

Back to School Night
On Thursday, September 21, will host Middleton's Back To School Night from 6:00 - 7:30 pm. We will begin with a presentation from the principal in the cafeteria. Following this, each classroom will offer two, 25 minute sessions. These sessions are identical so families may attend a classroom session for each child in their family. This is a time for parents to visit the classroom and learn about the curriculum that will be covered in their child's class this year.
Principal's Presentation: 6:00 - 6:30 pm
Session #1: 6:35 - 7:00 pm
Session #2: 7:05 - 7:30 pm
Early Release
Upcoming 1/2 Days
The release time on these half days will be at 11 am and lunch will not be served on those days. The 11:00 release time is a change from the information that was originally shared from the district. The dates of the three 1/2 days are:
November 1st
April 10th
June 12th
This information will be updated on the district calendar soon, and reminders will be sent to families as each day gets closer.
Attendance
- Set a regular bedtime and morning routine.
- Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before.
- Keep your child healthy and make sure your child has the required shots
- Develop backup plans for getting to school if something comes up. Call on a family member, a neighbor or another parent.
- Try to schedule medical appointments and extended trips when school isn't in session.
- If your child seems anxious about going to school, talk to teachers, school counselors and other parents for advice on how to make your child feel comfortable and excited about learning.
- If your child must stay home due to illness or quarantine, ask the teacher for resources and ideas to continue learning at home.
We are excited to partner with you in the education of your child(ren). If we can ever help with attendance or on time arrival to school, please just let us know.
Volunteer Background Checks
Every volunteer in Sherwood School District must have a criminal background check completed each school year (July 1-June 30). Background checks take 7-10 business days to process. Background checks are required for each school year, so background checks completed prior to July 1, 2023 are not valid for the 23-24 school year.
Once your background checks clear, names are added to the approved volunteer list for all SSD schools. Please note: no approval notice goes out to cleared volunteers, so if you have questions about your submission or want to confirm your background check has been processed and approved, please contact the office of the school you would like to volunteer
To complete the volunteer approval process for 2023-24, please complete the form below:
Fun Run
Volunteers Needed for the Fun Run
Please take a look at the Signup Genius and help fill up these spots to help make a fun event for our kids. We also are looking for as many volunteers as possible to help with the bib pinning on Oct. 5th at 10:30am, Room 5 (conference room). We have 450 shirts to pin running bibs on so the more hands the faster it will be! Thank you for your help!

Arrival and Dismissal
As a part of our annual safety and security review, our district elementary team has been thoughtfully considering how to make our elementary arrival and dismissal times as safe as possible. One major safety concern for our buildings is the entry of parents into the building for drop off in the mornings. Allowing parents to enter the building without background checks or scheduled volunteer times, creates a large breach in our building security measures. As such, we are going to continue to keep our arrival (and dismissal) procedures the same as last year. Parents will be allowed to drop off their students at the main entrance doors in the morning and all teachers will walk students out of the building at the end of the day. This will still provide parents with the opportunity to check in with teachers at pick up if needed, and will also help us to very closely monitor who is in our buildings at all times. For more details regarding drop off and pick up locations please see the slide deck linked here.
Volunteers and parent helpers will still be welcome in our schools during pre-scheduled volunteer times with our PAC or our classroom teachers. We will also host an in-person Back to School Night on Thursday, September 21 from 6:00-7:30 pm, and in-person conferences in late October and early May. It is important to us that we balance both student safety and parent involvement in our school community, and we believe this plan will allow us to do both. Additional information about volunteering can be found below.
If you drop off/pick up by car, please be sure to pull all the way forward in the car line. In addition, be sure to keep crosswalks and intersections clear and comply with crossing guard requests. Thank you for your help in keeping everyone safe.
