At Randolph-Henry, safety is our top priority, especially during prom season!
To ensure our students Arrive Alive not just for prom, but every day of the year, we've launched a comprehensive safety campaign. This week, a wrecked car and the Arrive Alive Banner stand on our front lawn, serving as powerful reminders of the importance of safe driving. In the cafeteria, a banner awaits student signatures, symbolizing their commitment to responsible choices. The main hallway features a display of a skeleton depicting daily scenarios of prom night tragedies, highlighting the real-life consequences of reckless behavior. Additionally, daily announcements feature alcohol awareness facts and trivia questions, fostering informed decision-making among our students.
During Intervention and Enrichment sessions, our guests spoke about the dangers of distracted driving, sharing firsthand experiences of arriving at the scene of a teenage car crash and delivering devastating news to families. Trooper Buzetta and Jonathon Benoun provided eye-opening statistics, including the percentages of teenage girls and boys involved in traffic fatalities. On stage, a never-worn prom dress and graduation gown served as poignant symbols of dreams unfulfilled, and families crushed by a bad decision. Sergeant Jason Jenkins from Prince Edward County also delivered a powerful presentation, equipping students with important statistics and impactful videos to help them make smart decisions behind the wheel.
Together with our after-prom party, these efforts aim to keep our students safe every night, including prom night. We are incredibly grateful for our school staff and the community partners who have joined us in this important mission. Together, we can make a difference and ensure that every journey is a safe one.

CTE Month
Each February, school divisions across the country celebrate National Career and Technical
Education (CTE) Month. This is a time to recognize the accomplishments and importance of
career and technical education for students at all levels. The CTE programs provided by Charlotte County Public Schools continue to offer a diverse background for students as they prepare to enter the workforce or post-secondary educational programs. Within the schools, the program begins with Keyboarding and Career Investigations at Central Middle School. All students are required to take part in these foundational courses that prepare students for work with technology and introduce them to the 16 different Career Clusters represented by CTE. Additionally, students take part in the Go Tech program, a regional partnership that introduces students to technology utilized by high-demand industries in our area. Once students advance to high school, they can participate in classes and/or dual-enrollment programs in 11 different Career Clusters. Randolph-Henry offers courses in Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources; Business Management and Administration; Finance; Information Technology; Health Science; Education and Training; Hospitality and Tourism; Arts/AV Technology and Communications; Architecture and Constructions; Transportation, Distribution, and Logistics; and Law, Public Safety, Corrections, and Security. The CTE program also
includes courses through Jobs for Virginia Graduates (JVG), which help seniors prepare for
transition to the workforce. “At Randolph-Henry High School, our CTE instructors are exceptional in fostering industry-specific skills, ensuring our students are well-prepared for the workforce, trade school, college, and beyond,” said Randolph-Henry Principal Erin Davis. “Recognizing the global demand for capable adults equipped with essential skills, our CTE department serves as a pivotal bridge, facilitating a seamless transition.” In addition to courses offered at the high school, students can also participate in a variety of dual-enrollment programs outside of the school setting. Students can earn dual-enrollment certificates through Southside Virginia Community College (SVCC) in Automotive, Nurse Aide, Welding, Electrical, HVAC and Cosmetology. They can also earn certificates in Cybersecurity and Energy and Power through the Southern Virginia Higher Education Center.
While participating in the various CTE programs offered by the school, students continue to gain
valuable experience in a variety of ways. Within various classes, students have the opportunity to
earn industry certifications and licenses that can be used for employment in the workforce. Last
year, Randolph-Henry students earned more than 200 industry certifications and licenses.
CTE classes are also supported by CTE Student Organizations, which provide students
opportunities to gain leadership experience and enhanced knowledge in their chosen areas of
study. Randolph-Henry has active Future Farmers of America (FFA), Future Business Leaders of
America (FBLA), and Health Occupations Student Association (HOSA) chapters, with students
typically advancing to state and national competitions. Finally, as a culmination to the CTE experience, students are able to participate in internships during their senior year. These internships allow students the opportunity to gain practical experience in the workforce while using the skills that they have learned through CTE and other courses. These experiences also provide students an opportunity to make direct connections with the region’s workforce that may lead to productive employment partnerships for both the student and employer. Any businesses that are willing to host an intern are encouraged to contact Julianna Reeves, School Counselor, at Randolph-Henry High School at 434-542-4111.

Homecoming 2023
On September 22, 2023, Randolph-Henry celebrated its annual Homecoming event by hosting a pep rally, parade, and football game. Kanye Dailey and Ta'Myra Redd were crowned as King and Queen with the backdrop of the setting sun and a rainbow over the field. Despite rain that moved in during the game, the Statesmen were able to secure a 26-16 victory over the Cumberland Dukes. We would like to thank the wonderful community that is Charlotte County for always supporting our homecoming event. We had a great crowd for the parade, several parade entries, and the stands were packed for the game.

Innovative Teacher September
Randolph-Henry High School would like to recognize Mrs. Zilke Greenland as the innovative teacher for the month of September. Mrs. Greenland is a new teacher this year at RHHS, specializing in Anatomy and Physiology. Mrs. Greeland has a kind and compassionate demeanor but commands her students' attention through a variety of hands-on activities. Her students put their skills to use by creating models and drawings of what they are learning in class. Recently, her students learned about the various types of muscles in the human body. Students examined these muscles through a microscope and made illustrations that highlight the differences in these muscle groups. To conclude this unit, she took students outside to participate in a muscle training activity on the front lawn led by Kari Joyner. We commend Mrs. Greenland for her efforts to make learning fun.
Mirror Mirror on the Wall
Thanks to a generous donation from Sentara Health, formerly Optima Health, the RH staff were able to participate in a fun competition to win a gift basket and an Amazon gift card. This contest was to recognize a staff member who showcases school spirit and a genuine love for Randolph-Henry. The winner, Shannon Hammock, is a math teacher for RHHS. She received over 40 votes from her coworkers, and is well known for her spirit day costumes. Congratulations Ms. Hammock.
Marigold of the Month
In keeping with our theme this year to be a marigold, RHHS would like to recognize Beverley Tate as the September Marigold of the Month. A marigold is someone who encourages and nurtures those around them. Mrs. Tate works tirelessly in the main office to answer calls, door bells, and the many questions that come up during the day. She keeps excellent attendance records and attends to everyone's needs with a smile and kindness. She embodies excellent customer service for all who pass through the office. Thank you Mrs. Tate!

Filling Up Students' Pots
In Mrs. Benn's Virginia Teachers for Tomorrow class, students examine a chapter about “self-worth”. They are learning that each student, and every adult, brings to school a perspective in which they view themselves, and the world. Humans are born as empty pots and the ingredients, both positive and negative, are added along the journey. Students and staff members were encouraged to write positive notes to one another that could be placed inside each classmates' pot. Students are pictured below, opening up the contents of their pots and reading the positive things that others said about them.

RHHS Marigolds
At the opening staff meeting for the 23-24 school year, RHHS Principal Erin Davis challenged each staff member to find his or her marigold amongst the staff and to be a marigold for others. Marigolds are well known as being a good companion plant in a garden as they protect against pests and harmful weeds. Likewise, a staff member is a marigold when they are a person who seeks to nurture and support those around them. Marigolds exude positivity and encouragement in the face of adversity. During the month of August, RH staff members were challenged to write a thank you note to someone else on staff who has been a marigold for them this year. These notes were dropped into a sealed box and one note was drawn. The author and recipient of that note were given a basket of back to school goodies to share. The gift basket was donated by Lebanon Church. All other notes at the end of the contest were delivered to the person whom they were written to.
The winning note belonged to Maggie George and was written by her collaborating teacher, Mrs. Sara Williams (pictured below). We know our staff is full of marigolds and we celebrate their commitment to uplifting one another.

Activity Fair
On August 22, 2023, Randolph-Henry hosted its very first club and activity fair during intervention and enrichment time. This idea was taken from a student project that was presented to the administrative team last year. The staff felt this was a worthy proposal and worked to make it happen for the students. All students had a chance to peruse the club and activity offerings in the cafeteria and then return to the auditorium for motivational films. While in the cafe, students could talk with coaches and other students in the club to learn more about their mission and sign up to take part. Students and staff agreed this event was a great success and we look forward to continuing to offer this in the future. We know that when our students find ways to be connected to the school culture here at RHHS, they will have a better experience during these four years.

Prom 2023 Press Release
On April 29, 2023, Randolph-Henry High School hosted the annual prom and after-prom party. This year's theme was Enchanted Island, where ocean breezes sweep across palm trees and dancing happens surfside. Students were transported to a luxurious tropical paradise of palm trees, boardwalks, and ocean scenes. The after-prom party provided the atmosphere of a surfside tiki party. The Central Middle School cafeteria was adorned with several chandeliers, white and sand colored table decorations, shells, and palms. Two hundred-fourteen students attended the prom, making it the second largest in many years. One hundred-forty one students remained on campus for the after party.
The Randolph -Henry High School After- Prom committee would like to extend their gratitude to the community for the tremendous support of our annual event. We received numerous donations from area churches, businesses, individuals, and organizations, which enabled us to offer many exciting attractions this year. Students were treated to sumo wrestling, a photo booth, casino card games, a light challenge inflatable, coloring, an obstacle course, corn hole, darts, a bungee cord race and more. Staff members raffled off $1,500 in prizes throughout the night including a laptop, a Nintendo Switch, a mini refrigerator, headphones and other items. Some students also walked away with cash after participating in a money-grab booth.
While the After-Prom party is supposed to be a fun time for students, it is important to remember its purpose. Providing students with a safe, alcohol free place is a critical part of keeping the Charlotte County youth safe on prom night. As drugs and alcohol continue to take the lives of students across the nation, we are happy to report that attendance at our event was at an all time high this year. We consider our efforts a success when we know that none of our students suffered injuries or fatalities on prom night. Randolph-Henry’s After-Prom committee hopes that attendance will continue to increase each year and that our students will always “arrive alive” after prom. Thank you for your continued support in helping to make a difference in the lives of our Statesmen family.

She operates a t-shirt business out of her classroom where students are able to design, advertise, create and sell various products. In addition, Mrs. Pillow utilizes a 3-D printer with her students. She is currently in the planning phase of transforming her classroom into a “shark tank” similar to the popular television show. Mrs. Pillow brings real-world experiences to her students and always works to make learning fun through field trips, guest speakers, and hands-on learning.
When she is not teaching, Mrs. Pillow can be seen working on the After-Prom Party, helping with the Arrive Alive campaign, fundraising, and planning various events and competitions with the Future Business Leaders of America. We commend Mrs. Pillow for the many ways in which she impacts our school.
Statesmen Alumni
Statesmen Baseball had another alumnus, Jordan Jones come and speak to our team about his experiences playing at Randolph-Henry. Mr. Jones graduated in 2018 and then played at Eastern Mennonite University for four years. He is now staying involved with baseball from a different perspective by working for Prep Baseball Report (PBR) as a baseball scout for Central Virginia. Mr. Jones spoke on the legacy of Randolph-Henry Baseball and how all the memories he had with his teammates still recollect today. He encouraged our guys to work hard and enjoy the time they have with their brothers on the team. He stated that Statesmen baseball has a legacy of success that comes with doing things the right way and that’s how he wants it to continue. He also stated to not take a practice off, a play off, or a pitch off because you never know when it may be your last. We thank you Jordan for coming and being an example of how the Statesmen Baseball Legacy continues long after you graduate!

The focus of this event was to bring awareness to local opportunities that can be achieved through educational pathways within the Career Tech Academy. RHHS students can attend morning programs in South Boston as well as internships in the afternoons.
Current CTA students talked to our Statesmen about CTA programs, pathways, and work-based learning experiences. We would like to thank representatives from Hitachi, Morgan Lumber, Comfort Systems USA, and the Career Tech Academy for speaking to our students. The CTA programs have direct ties to each of these companies and many more. A year of training with CTA can help students obtain an entry-level position at these companies making $19+/hour right out of high school. We are currently accepting applications for next year. If this program is right for your student, please click on the link below.

Innovative Teacher Award: March
Randolph-Henry High School would like to recognize Rhonda Benn as the March recipient of the Innovative Teacher Award. Mrs. Benn teaches a variety of courses such as Teachers for Tomorrow, Early Childhood Development, Jobs for Virginia Graduates, and Introduction to Design. Mrs. Benn is a highly innovative teacher.
When you walk into one of Mrs. Benn’s classes, you may see guest speakers, students working on projects, or her students may be off on a real-world job shadowing experience. Mrs. Benn employs a variety of learning modalities in her classes as she prepares the next generation of educators to fill our classrooms. Her students venture out to the STEPS head start program where they can put their skills to work when serving our local pre-k students. They also take walking tours to observe local architecture as it relates to interior design. Mrs. Benn is also passionate about helping our seniors create plans for post-graduation. As a JVG coordinator she works hard to ensure our students have a strong resume when they leave the walls of RHHS.
When she is not teaching, Mrs. Benn can be seen working on junior class events, planning prom, hosting etiquette dinners for our students, or adding her artistic touch to all of our many school events. We commend Mrs. Benn for her dedication to our school.
RHHS is growing the next generation of educators!
Guest Speaker
Amber Robillard, a former Randolph-Henry Statesmen, returned to Nurse Elder's class on Monday, March 20, 2023 as a guest speaker. After taking Nurse Elder's courses in high school, Amber followed through on her goals in the medical field by becoming a labor and delivery nurse. Here she can be seen demonstrating for students how to apply a wireless monitor a patient to keep up with the mother's contractions and the baby’s heart rate. She also showed students internal monitoring tools, the peanut ball, and various heart rhythm strips that can occur during the birthing process. She talked with students about careers in nursing and shared some of her experiences with them. This was a great opportunity for our students.

RHHS Presents Seussical
RHHS would like to thank everyone who came out to support the Statesmen Players' production of Seussical. Leading up to this musical the cast worked on rehearsing choreography, singing, and blocking while the crew created all of the set pieces, props, designed the lighting, and managed the microphones/overall sound. Our students played vital roles in every part of the production process and we are so proud of how hard they worked. The newly installed cyclorama was a beautiful addition to our musical this year. This equipment allowed students to project various colors on a backdrop in order to create mood effects throughout the performance.

Charlotte Court House – March 2023 – Randolph-Henry High School’s yearbook, The Log 2022 has been recognized for excellence and featured in the Jostens Look Book 2023, celebrating the best-of-the-best in yearbook design and inclusivity. The Jostens Look Book is a collection of outstanding yearbooks and their creative themes, cool covers, beautiful designs, relevant coverage of school events, meaningful storytelling, and stunning photography. Along with design excellence, the annually published Look Book honors the work of the students who create the yearbook over the course of 6-12 months. Through it, they chronicle the experiences, stories, and achievements most relevant to students and that academic year.

Napier, Randolph-Henry High School yearbook adviser.
“It is an honor to receive this award for the third year in a row. I am so proud to have worked with such a dedicated and innovative staff,” said Napier.
The Randolph-Henry yearbook was one of only 479 yearbooks selected from nearly one thousand yearbooks submitted. The 2023 panel of judges, comprised of nationally recognized scholastic journalism professionals and award-winning yearbook advisers, selected the best examples of yearbook spreads and covers to make up the 320-page Look Book 2023.
“The Jostens Look Book showcases the hard work and dedication of students who tell the story of the school year through photos and words. It is their collaboration and communication, as well as creative thinking in challenging situations, that results in the fine designs shown in this book,” said Kristen Scott, Yearbook Marketing Manager at Jostens. “We are very proud to celebrate the ability of this country’s future leaders and communicators by showcasing their sophisticated designs and photography.”

February Innovative Teacher Award
Randolph-Henry High School would like to recognize Kari Joyner as the February recipient of the Innovative Teacher Award. Mrs. Joyner teaches our Teachers for Tomorrow Part II class and also serves as the school’s librarian. Mrs. Joyner is a highly innovative teacher.
Within the first month of class, her teacher cadets had already completed a “schools of the past” project, a historical gallery-walk through time at R-HHS, created social emotional learning plans, and explored various teaching strategies through a station model. Later in the semester, Mrs. Joyner’s students will put what they have learned into practice as teacher cadets in our CCPS elementary and middle schools. Mrs. Joyner works to inspire the next generation of teachers through a variety of real-world experiences. She also communicates what her students are learning through the use of classroom newsletters.
When she is not teaching, Mrs. Joyner can be seen working on senior class events, coaching cross country, or sponsoring clubs such as the literary arts club or the library club. Her library is always a warm and welcoming place for students and each month she finds unique ways to encourage reading. We commend Mrs. Joyner for the multitude of ways she reaches the students of RHHS.

RHHS Hosts Career Day
Randolph-Henry High School hosted a Career Day on February 15, 2023. This day was dedicated to a focus on careers, job readiness, interview skills, resume writing and more. Many of our teachers invited guest speakers who work in fields related to the courses they teach. Others planned career activities such as interview do’s and don’ts and resume writing. Some classes chose to Zoom with a professional, do a virtual job shadowing, or complete a project where students researched related careers. Our students also took the opportunity to practice their “dress for success skills” on this day. Chef Engelhorn and his culinary arts students served lunches to our guest speakers as a thank you for their visit.
The idea for hosting a career day actually came from our student body. Several students felt like they wanted to learn more about various careers that relate to what is being studied in class and felt they could benefit from more career ready activities. We are very excited to support our students as they prepare to take their next steps in life. We hope this career day was beneficial to them and that we can continue this tradition next year.
