Solar Eclipse (April 8)
Elementary Families,
We hope this message finds you well. We are writing to remind you that on Monday, April 8th, a solar eclipse will be visible in our area during school dismissal.
Solar eclipses are rare and exciting events, but they also pose a safety hazard for those who look directly at the sun during that time. Therefore, we encourage all parents/guardians—whether they walk, drive, or send their children home on buses—to proactively discuss the precautions their family believes are appropriate to ensure their child's safety during the eclipse. Here is an article from NASA that further explains this. We are providing this reminder in advance to allow families time to prepare.
Sincerely,
Elementary Principals
WALKER/PARENT-PICK UP DISMISSAL 4/8
Dismissal for parent pick-ups/walkers will be in the gym on Monday (due to the eclipse). We are fortunate that we have the gym space to accommodate this. This will be the same as our rainy day dismissal routine.
Lunch Account Balances & Snack Purchasing
If you have a negative lunch balance in your account, your child will not be able to purchase snacks. Therefore, if you send in money for snacks, that money will be applied to the negative lunch balance first.
Example: Joe Does account is -22.00, but the child comes in with 2.00 in cash to purchase a snack. We will give the money back to the child as: the child would be disappointed knowing they gave us 2.00, expecting a snack, but instead the 2.00 would go towards the negative balance.
If the child brought in $25.00, then the child's balance would become 3.00 after the 25.00 payment, thus they can then buy a snack.
Arrival and Dismissal Reminders
Arrival:
- Students should not be arriving before 8:55 am. We do not have staff outside before that time.
- It is preferable that you use the drop off line to drop off your students (rather than parking on Roberts street).
Dismissal:
The parking lot is VERY BUSY. You are all do a great job being very careful about coming in and coming out. THANK YOU!
- DO NOT park your car in the middle of the parking lot lane. This blocks other cars from parking leaving. Instead, you'll need to park (even if your child is signing themselves out).
SBSD Parent Academy: HIB Law Update for Parents, Presented by John Worthington, ESQ.
In an effort to further collaborate with the families in our community, the district is offering an informative session on Harassment, Intimidation and Bullying (HIB) on April 23, 2024, at 6:30PM, in the auditorium at Crossroads North Middle School.
In this session parents will be provided with:
-an overview of the laws governing bullying in New Jersey to provide an understanding of how they apply to their children;
-the difference between Code of Conduct and HIB violations;
-the recent changes to the law, as well as some court cases that impact how the laws are applied;
-information on free speech and social media issues and requirements;
-the procedures to be followed should a student be a victim or perpetrator in a bullying case; and
-the rights of students and unique procedures for certain students, including LGBTQ students and students with disabilities.
Please register for this event, and childcare (if needed), by 4/16 using this form. Click here for more information. If you have any questions, contact Blair.Eiseman@sbschools.org.

Spring Allergies (from Nurse Bethany)
SPRING ALLERGIES ARE HERE!!!
Springtime plant activity in the United States is ahead of schedule by up to 3 weeks, which means there is more pollen in the air than usual. Experts predict a longer spring allergy season as well as a more intense one!
Allergy symptoms include:
Sneezing
Nasal congestion
Runny nose
Itchy, watery, red eyes
Itchy throat
Coughing
Headache
There is no real cure for seasonal allergies, but it is possible to relieve symptoms. Over the counter medications such as Claritin or Zyrtec can be helpful if taken daily during allergy season. Talk to your pediatrician to discuss if medication may be appropriate for your child. Please keep in mind, it takes approximately 2 weeks for allergy medicine to build up in the body to take full effect. Prescription or over the counter allergy medication or eye drops should also be given before the school day, if needed.
During allergy season it is important to remind your child to wash their hands and face after playing outside.
All students are expected to participate in the school day curriculum when they come to school. As such we do not allow students to stay in from recess during allergy season. Reinforce good hand washing with your child and talk to your physician about treatment for symptoms.

The gallery will be open from 4-8PM, with our Art Specialists on site from 6-8PM. Bring your family. You'll be blown away! Thank you to Julia Lieberman, a senior at SBHS, for the design of the art gallery flyer.
