May Updates and Reminders
- THANK YOU to our amazing Jackson PTO for arranging so many things during Teacher Appreciation Week-Providing lunch, Yoga after school, Ax throwing.
- This past week we celebrated Nurse Appreciation Day and our Chartwells Lunch Staff. Thank you all for taking such good care of staff, students, and families at Jackson.
- Teacher requests should be emailed to Mrs. DeRosier, no later than May 24th.
- If a student brings a cell phone to school, the phone stays off and in their backpacks all day. If a staff member catches a student on their phone inside or outside of school, the phone will stay in the office until the end of the day. We have been having problems with students taking pictures and videos at school and posting on social media. Many families do not want their children on social media. Please remind your child about the expectations.
- Next year all student information and emergency information will be directly put into Skyward by parents. You should have received directions about how to do this from District Office. If you have problems, please call the Jackson office.
May SRP Safety Drill-Evacuate (Gym)
School safety is critical to high quality learning and the Manitowoc Public School District utilizes the K12 Standard Response Protocol (SRP/SRM) to provide a consistent safety response at all schools. The SRP provides five safety response protocols. Those five responses are SECURE - LOCKDOWN - EVACUATE - SHELTER - HOLD. The SRP provides for a standard response that is shared and trained with students, staff, visitors and with our first responders from the Fire and Police Departments.
Each month throughout the school year, all Manitowoc Public Schools will train on one of the five responses. The training is designed to create knowledge, answer questions, and build familiarity for all students, staff and visitors.
This month we will be practicing an EVACUATION drill. The purpose of the drill is to give students the opportunity to practice in case something would happen. If you have any questions or concerns, please give me a call.

Student Engagement Survey
Parents/Guardians,
On May 1st, our annual Student Engagement Survey was emailed out to each student in grades 4-12. The survey will run from May 1st to May 24th. Students will be taking the survey during class time. This is a chance for us to learn about how things are going in our schools through the eyes of our students. The survey is not scored and will not affect student grades. Responses are confidential.
SFA Chat-With Mr. Sleger
It is true what they say…April showers bring May flowers! It has been great to watch our Jackson
students “bloom” as readers this year. We have come so far and yet we are still continuing to grow.
I am very excited to see our final SFA data at the end of May.
As the weather continues to get nice, I know it is easy to put off doing homework. Please make
sure your child is reading each night. In order to build their comprehension, ask your child about
what they read. An area that SFA focuses on is responding in complete sentences. This is another
area you can work on at home. If you ask your child what the weather is like…they should not
respond with, “Nice.” A correct response would be to restate the question and provide details. For
example: “Today, the weather is partly cloudy with a little sunshine and warm enough to wear
shorts and a T-shirt.” Restating the question ensures a child’s understanding of what is being
asked. Please continue to sign the gold homework response sheet and return it along with their
reading bag. We do have a homework contest going on throughout fourth quarter. Every Monday, I
announce the top KinderRoots, Roots, and Wings classroom with the highest returned homework
percentage. Randomly, one student is chosen from each component who has a high percentage of
homework turned in and receives a prize. At the end of May, one KinderRoots, Roots, and Wings
classroom with the highest returned homework will win a donut party and storytime with me.
Now that we have “blossomed,” we need to be “busy bees” in the month of May as there is still
reading work to do! Thank you always for your continued support in your child’s educational journey!
