8th Grade Parent Night

8th Grade Parent Night at Souhegan will take place on Monday, February 13 from 6:00-8:00pm. We are to share information about the educational opportunities that are waiting for your student at Souhegan High School next year. Throughout the evening you will learn more about our academic course offerings and the athletics and extracurricular activities that go with them. You'll also hear directly from our faculty, students and administrators about what makes 9th grade at Souhegan so special. While students may attend with their families, this event is intended for a parent/guardian audience. Our Step-Up Day event later this spring will provide an opportunity for students to come over and explore first-hand the new curriculum and opportunities that will take place next year.

Conversation with Mike Berry, Principal of Souhegan High School

This month’s conversation with Mike Berry will take place over Zoom on Wednesday, February 21 at 6:30pm. The focus of this session will be to solicit information from the parent perspective regarding Souhegan’s graduation requirements. The Graduation Requirements Committee first began its work during the summer of 2022 and has so far reviewed educational research, examined the requirements and practices of peer districts, examined post-graduation data of Souhegan students, and conducted student panel focus groups. The next step is to conduct a parent panel focus group using a predetermined set of questions. While we know parents have valuable feedback on many aspects of the student and parent experience at Souhegan, we are looking specifically for thoughts on our graduation requirements, not curriculum and instruction or other aspects of student life. Members from the committee reviewing Graduation Requirements will also be present to take notes to inform the next steps of the committee.

Granite State Respect Week

We are excited to announce that we will be participating in our 6th year of Granite State Respect Week (GRSW)! The campaign will take place from February 13-17th. GRSW is a teen-centered awareness campaign designed by the New Hampshire Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence and its 12 member programs to be implemented in middle and high schools across the Granite State in February. We are looking forward to engaging in conversations and activities centered on creating and upholding a safe and positive learning environment at our school. GSRW aims to raise awareness during Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month, connect teens to support services, promote healthy relationships, and foster a culture of respect in New Hampshire schools. In 2022, nearly 20,000 students participated in GSRW. The focus of this year's Granite State Respect Week is empowering students to "Lead with Respect." The activities throughout Respect Week prompt students to reflect on their personal and community-based experiences and to consider how they can continue to take action to support healthy relationships in their community. #RESPECTWEEKNH

Creating Friendship for Peace

Creating Friendship for Peace (CFP) invites Amherst and Mont Vernon families to consider a volunteer teen hosting opportunity for July 2023.

We are seeking 4 to 8 families willing to open their homes to teen pairs arriving from Israel/Palestine and the island of Cyprus-- both countries with divided lands.

Your willingness to participate in this two-week or the month-long friendship-building program will deliver teens from opposing sides of their nation's conflict a memorable and transformative experience-- the chance to develop unlikely friendships with their former enemies and to begin the work of re-imagining their lives as future leaders of a peaceful nation.

LOCAL SCHOLARSHIPS – AVAILABLE FEBRUARY 14

We are very fortunate to live in a community that supports our graduating seniors with over 70 scholarship opportunities. On Tuesday, February 14th, we encourage you to log into your Naviance account where you will be able to review the criteria and requirements for each scholarship. There is something for everyone whether you are matriculating to a 2 or 4 year college or pursuing a career at a vocational or training program. Last year’s graduating class received over one-hundred thousand dollars!

A sampling of criteria:

- Attending a Community College, Vocational or Technical

- Pursuing a degree in Agriculture, Art, Business, Culinary, Engineering, Law Enforcement, Music, Nursing, Teaching, Theatre, Science

- Academic Success at Souhegan

- Above and beyond Community Service hours

Destination College

Saturday, March 25th 8:30-2:00

Registration for the 24th annual free statewide college planning event for high school juniors and parents is underway. NHHEAF and Plymouth State University is co-sponsoring this event. Register early as space is limited. For more information and to register, go to Destination College.

BAE Systems - FOCUS Program

BAE Systems will be offering another session of our FOCUS Program beginning in April 2023. FOCUS is an 11-week in person program which provides hands-on experiences in STEM fields to help grow students' interest in technical education and careers. The program takes place at BAE Systems Nashua Canal Street facility from April 5 through June 14 Students will participate on Wednesday evenings from 6-8 p.m.

Students in grades 9 – 12 from schools within a reasonable driving distance from Southern New Hampshire are welcome to apply for the program through March 7. Our application is hosted on Tallo: https://app.tallo.com/application/9069/view (note: students will need to create a Tallo profile to apply, this is easy and free and compliant with NH student privacy standards).

Senior Project News

Our next Senior Project checkpoint will take place on March 15. This checkpoint will be between the senior and their mentor. At this point all research should be complete, although students may continue to supplement their research after this checkpoint if they wish. The specific criteria for this checkpoint includes a complete Works Cited page, and evidence of research that draws from a minimum of 10 sources and includes a minimum of 10 pages of notes.

It is important to note that seniors can only pass one checkpoint at a time. Currently, there are students who have an Incomplete from the most recent Applied Piece Proposal Checkpoint. These students do not currently have off-campus privileges and must fulfill the expectations of their action plan that was designed at the checkpoint meeting and then the panel will determine if the student has passed the checkpoint. After passing, the student can then complete their research checkpoint. All family members should have received communication from the mentor, Kathy and Ryan about a student’s Incomplete status.

Souhegan Ethics Forum is excited to host the upcoming Winter Dance and has been partnering with ConVal High School on the upcoming Boys and Girls Double Header Basketball Games.

Both groups share the common goal of raising money for local organizations that benefit our communities. Money raised at the basketball games will be used by ConVal High School to support Break the Silence, a student-led initiative that aims to end the stigma around mental health while Souhegan will use the funds from the games and the dance to raise money for End 68 Hours of Hunger and upcoming conferences. The girls game tips off at 5:00pm and the boys at 7:00pm.

Community members are encouraged to support our Souhegan Sabers at ConVal Wednesday night. Wear your Purple Claws for a Cause t-shirts to show your spirit. Shirts will also be available for purchase at the games! Hope to see you there! Let’s go, Sabers!

Project Graduation 2023

SHS Parents! Planning for Project Graduation 2023 has begun! Project Graduation is an event held directly after graduation ceremonies for the newest SHS alumni. There are a lot of fun activities and it is a wonderful chance for the graduates to hang out with their class one last time before their adventures take them elsewhere! Most importantly, it is a drug-free event and parents can be assured their children are getting home safe and sound on graduation night. All grade-level parents can participate in the planning! The only caveat is that Senior parents cannot attend the event. This is your time to kick back, relax, and celebrate your job well done! Our next meeting is Wednesday day, 2/15, at 7 pm via Zoom. The link is below. Come learn about Project Graduation and get involved! If the SHS community values this event, we need some younger grade families to become involved as many on the committee have their youngest graduating--an exciting, but bittersweet, time for us. Following the fall season, Souhegan High School was selected as the Division 2 winner of the annual NHFOA Sportsmanship Award. This award comes with a $1,000 scholarship for the student who exemplifies positive behaviors, promotes good sportsmanship, and is both a good student and good human.

Congratulations to senior Brady Melvin, who will receive this award. The officials association will be coming to Souhegan in the near future to present the banner to the school and scholarship to Brady. A story in the Nashua Telegraph with more information will follow as well.

On Wednesday, 2/15 the boys and girls varsity basketball teams will travel to ConVal for a varsity double header. Girls game is 5pm and the boys tip off is set for 7pm. Our Ethics Forum has been working with ConVal to continue the Claws for a Cause initiative Souhegan began in the fall. The proceeds from the game at ConVal will go to support educational funding and Directional Behavioral Health located in Nashua and Break the Silence.
