Principal's Message
Message from the Principal
Dear Families,
I hope this message finds you well! We’ve had a fantastic start to the school year, and it has been wonderful to see our children return with such joy and enthusiasm.
As we transition into fall, there’s so much to look forward to! Our kindergarten students are gearing up for a field trip to the fire station, where they’ll learn about fire safety in a fun and engaging way. Additionally, our book fair is just around the corner—an excellent opportunity to encourage our young readers!
We’re also thrilled to announce our very first Trunk or Treat event! It promises to be a fun evening for families, filled with treats, and community spirit.
Our Fun Run is scheduled for October 2nd, with a rain date of October 3rd. This is a very important event for us, as it helps to fund SO MANY of the additional activities in our school, such as our field trips, school assemblies, end of the year fun events such as our field day, and SO MUCH MORE! If you have not signed up to participate, we encourage you to do so soon! It is a great way for our whole school to connect, move, and have fun together!
Thank you for your continued support and involvement in our school community. Together, we can make this a memorable year for our children!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Molly Dehlinger
Welcome to Our New Assistant Principal!
On September 20, we welcomed Mrs. Shannon Cavanaugh as our new Assistant Principal at Union Pleasant. Please join us in giving her a warm welcome.

Joy, Value and Connection
Arrival and Dismissal
If your student is a walker who enters the Pleasant Avenue side of our building, please do not send them prior to the 8:50 AM entry time. There is no early entry or supervision prior to that time, even in the event of inclement weather.
It is extremely important to us that we know exactly where every student will be dismissing at the end of each day! If you need to change your child's dismissal plan for a day, please write a note and send it in with your child to school. If your dismissal plan needs to change after the school day starts, please call the main office at 716-646-3280, option 1 to speak to one of our secretaries and, ALSO, send an email to jcarrig@hcsdk12.org AND mmurray@hcsdk12.org, indicating the change. PLEASE MAKE ANY DISMISSAL CHANGES BEFORE 1:00PM. This allows us enough time to make sure that the teacher is in the classroom and receives the dismissal change before the end of the school day.
Open House Parent Feedback
Here we are at the end of September, and we would love some parent feedback on the format of our Open Houses for future planning. As always, I appreciate your time and effort to ensure that you not only feel welcome here at UPES, but that you are a valued part of our community. Linked here is the Google Form.
Updating the Parent Portal
It is very important that you log into your parent portal at the beginning of the school year and update any emergency contact and phone number changes you may have. We can only release your children to the custodial parent(s) and those listed as emergency contacts. We are no longer sending home Emergency sheets at the beginning of the school year, so all parents must log in.
The Parent Portal also has other information you will need. This is where your child's report cards will be posted later in the school year.
Staff Updates
Welcome to the following new staff members who started here at UPES this past month:
- Mrs. Jessica McNichol - Teacher Aide
- Mrs. Diane Scheelar - Cafeteria Monitor
- Mrs. Shannon Cavanaugh - Assistant Principal
- Mr. Dave Terry - Head Custodian
Notes From Nurse Insley
Physicals:
A letter from the health office was sent home if your student is in need of an up-to-date (07/01/2023-present) physical. New York State law requires a health examination for all students entering the school district for the first time and when entering Pre-K or K, 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th, 9th, and 11th grade. The examination must be completed by a New York State licensed physician, physician assistant or nurse practitioner and on the NYS Health Appraisal Form . Completed Health Appraisal forms can be emailed or faxed to the Health Office.
Medications:
If your child will be taking medication during the school year, medication forms for both prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) medications must be signed by the provider and parent annually. Medication must remain in the properly labeled pharmacy or original OTC container. Parents or guardians must personally deliver all medication to the school health office. Medication forms are available on the district website or may be obtained from the school health office. Your physician may use his or her own form if desired.
Guidelines for Illness:
Although at times it may be inconvenient, we ask that in order to prevent a longer or recurring illness for your child and to prevent the spread of illness to other children, you keep your child home from school if:
- Your child has a fever. Your child must be fever free for 24 hours without medication before returning to school. Please do not treat a fever and send your child to school.
- Your child has had vomiting or diarrhea within the last 24 hours. Please allow your child to recover and be eating normally before returning to school.
- Your child has a persistent cough that could spread illness to others or be disruptive to learning in the classroom.
- Your child has been diagnosed with strep throat or is awaiting results. Your child must be on antibiotics for 24 hours before returning.
- Your child has an unexplained rash or sores.
- Your child has been diagnosed with pink eye. Your child must be on antibiotic eye drops for 24 hours before returning.
- Your child has been diagnosed with head lice. Your child must be treated and free of lice and nits before returning.
Gym Excuses:
- If your child had an active Doctor's note excusing them from physical education at the end of the 2023-2024 school year, we will need a Doctor's note allowing clearance before they are able to participate in physical education and recess in the 2024-2025 school year.
- If your child is being excused from physical education by a parent/guardian or by a medical provider, they will also be excused from recess.
- A parent can request in writing a gym excuse for their child for 1-3 PE classes. Otherwise, a medical provider's note will be required.
- A physician note is required for a student to use crutches and the elevator in the school.
- If a student is using crutches and typically rides a bus, please contact the main office as other transportation arrangements may need to be made.
- Any note excusing the child from physical education must include the nature of the injury, any limitations and restrictions, and the dates the student is to be excused.
Extra Clothing Recommendation:
We recommend that all student's keep a change of clothes in their backpack in case of accidents, spills, inclement weather, etc. The health office does have a supply of extra underwear, clothes, coats, hats, mittens, socks and shoes. The health office does accept new and used donations. If you have clothing that you are getting rid of and think we might be able to use it at the school, please contact me and I can let you know what we are in need of.
Sunscreen:
Students can carry and use topical sunscreen products approved by the FDA with the written permission of the parent or guardian of the student. A record of this permission must be maintained by the school. A student who is unable to physically apply sunscreen may be assisted by unlicensed personnel when directed to do so by the student if permitted by a parent or guardian and authorized by the school.
