The Tiger Times
A Monthly Newsletter from Rolling Hills Elementary
September 2, 2024
Principal's Message
Dear Rolling Hills Families,
What an incredible start to the 2024-2025 school year this has been! Teachers have spent a lot of time these first few weeks getting to know students and fostering a sense of community in each classroom. Last Friday, we had our second annual "Den Day," which was an opportunity for students to come together as classroom, grade-level, and cross-grade-level communities, and it was a roaring success!
It's my pleasure to announce the addition of several fantastic new professionals to our RHL team. Nazia Begum and Laure Poe have joined our preschool team as para educators and Mary Baker has joined our affective needs program as a para educator. We are now 100% fully staffed! In addition, we also are lucky enough to get to host two former RHL students as future educator para apprentices, Ryan Shirack and Michaela Chambers, and one student teacher, Ashlyn Gertie.
The rest of this newsletter contains lots of new information for you, as well as repeats of some important information to continue to keep in mind.
In partnership,
Principal Alison Bruckner

Soft Start Change
We had planned to move our soft start time that the doors open from 7:45 to 7:50 this year. Our teachers' contracted work day doesn't actually begin until 7:40 and so we were trying to create a better flow for staff between their report time and on-duty time. Ultimately, this didn't work with the district's transportation schedule, and so we have moved our soft start time back to 7:45. Students may enter through the K/1 or 4/5 doors between 7:45-8:00 moving forward.
Safety and Security
Our top priority at school is to make sure your child is safe. The Cherry Creek School District follows a standard response protocol for emergency drills and procedures. This helps us communicate and respond immediately and effectively with all personnel during drills and in the event of an emergency. This set of five responses is posted in every room of our building, and each scenario is practiced as a drill multiple times throughout the school year. We practice evacuations once each month and all other responses are practiced at least twice per school year. We have already completed one “Evacuate” drill (also known as a fire drill), and it went very smoothly. We will have our first "Lockdown" drill this month.

GET INVOLVED!
Our school has many avenues for parents to get involved and have a voice. Your partnership is vital in helping our school continually grow and improve so that we can help your children reach their greatest potential. Here are just a few of the ways you can get involved as a parent:
PTCO
Our Parent Teacher Community Organization is a huge support for our school. The purpose of the PTCO shall be to assist in attaining the highest level of education and welfare for the entire student body of Rolling Hills Elementary through the cooperative efforts of the faculty and staff, the Cherry Creek School District community, and the parents.
The PTCO plans and puts on countless community engagement events and celebrations for our students and families. Our PTCO also organizes fundraisers that support grants for teachers, provide funding for teaching assistants, and supplement district-provided technology, just to name a few benefits. PTCO is always looking for new members, volunteers, and fresh ideas. In fact, without volunteers, we cannot hold the fun events our community has come to love and look forward to. Please see the following message from our PTCO about an upcoming even cancellation due to lack of volunteers.
Family Fun Event Cancelled!
Message from PTCO: Thank you to everyone who signed up to volunteer for the family fun event. Unfortunately, we can't have the event without a parent lead to help oversee the event, and all slots needed to be filled by Friday's deadline.
What is a parent lead you ask?
For starters the parent lead does not do all the work! Remember all slots have to be filled to execute an event.
Someone who assign jobs to the helpers and oversees the execution. This can all be done via email. Want to meet in person, even better!
Communicates to the board liaison per event for things like building access, location access etc.
You can get involved with our PTCO by coming to monthly meetings which occur one Thursday evening per month. Our first general PTCO meeting will take place on Thursday, September 12th from 6:30-7:30 PM in the school library.
You can also directly sign up to volunteer to help out with events this year here: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0E4BA4AF23A4F9C25-50520405-ptco#/

School Accountability Committee (SAC)
At SAC meetings, we discuss how Rolling Hills is meeting its accountability goals for excellence and equity, for a safe and caring environment, and for partnering with students, parents and community members in the education process.
We are going to try a new meeting day/time for SAC meetings this year. We will meet every other month right after the morning bell in the library. On alternating months, we will have PASS meetings--more info on that to come in our October newsletter. Our first SAC meeting will take place on Wednesday, September 25th and we will be discussing CMAS data and our Unified Improvement Plan.
The district also holds periodic district accountability meetings, and we are looking for one parent to represent our school as our district accountability contact, attending district meetings and reporting back. If you are interested in holding this role, please email Principal Bruckner at abruckner@cherrycreekschools.org.
Attendance
720-886-3495
We need to hear from you every time your child is going to be absent from school. Please call the attendance line listed above before 8:00 am to report your child's absence. The attendance lines are available 24 hours a day. If you do not call by 8 am, our automated system will reach out with reminders that we need to hear from you if your child is absent from school. Calling helps us know your child is safe and accounted for, but it does not necessarily mean their absence will be recorded as excused. Please see CCSD board policy regarding excused and unexcused absences here: https://go.boarddocs.com/co/chcr/Board.nsf/goto?open&id=AJ7JCJ4C2B43
In case of illness children should stay home until:
- They are fever free (less than 100.4 degrees F) for 24 hours without medication that might mask symptoms.
- Vomiting and Diarrhea have subsided for 24 hours without medication that might mask symptoms.
- Antibiotics for any infections (like strep throat) have been administered for at least 12 hours.
- Parents have checked with the school or their doctor regarding minor contagious illnesses.
- Their child feels well enough to return to class.
Tardiness
It is very important that students arrive at school on time, between 7:50 am and 8:00 am. Students who are not in their seats by 8:05 AM are considered tardy. All absences, tardies and early dismissals are recorded for documentation.
Attendance Concerns:
If a child accumulates ten absences or tardies, parents/guardians will receive a letter from the school, regardless of whether the absences are logged as excused or unexcused. Attendance letters are automatically generated and sent by our attendance system at 10 and 15 absences. If concerns continue further actions may be taken.
Lost and Found Items
Please label all personal items that your child brings to school with their first and last names. We donate lost and found items two times a year during winter break and the last day of school. We do return lost items to your student if the item is labeled. Smaller items like glasses, jewelry, phones, keys, garage door openers, etc. are kept in the office and emails are sent out to teachers so they can mention to their classroom that the items have been found. If they are not claimed, they are donated or disposed of.
School Visitors - Door Bell Entry System
The safety of our students is always at the forefront of district planning. Therefore, we have a doorbell entry system and secure vestibule at our school. When you visit the school you must ring the doorbell on the silver speaker box. You must identify yourself and your reason for being at our school. The office staff will be able to talk to you as well as see you on a monitor. Once the staff has identified you and verified your reason for visiting, the door will be unlocked remotely.
You will then enter the secure vestibule. On the left side of this space is a self-service kiosk where you can scan your ID, check in, and print your visitor's badge After you are signed in, please press the buzzer located above the sign in station to the the office know are ready to enter the second set of doors, and they will remotely unlock them for you.
Parents are always welcome at school as visitors and volunteers. They may visit/eat with their kiddos at lunch any day without an appointment. If parents want to visit or volunteer in the classroom or meet with a teacher, they need to arrange it in advance with the teacher and should reach out by phone or email to schedule a time to meet, talk, visit, or volunteer.
At morning drop off, parents will be expected to say goodbye to their student(s) at the school entry door or at the main office.
Volunteer/Partner Process (MUST Fill Out If Volunteering in Classroom)
If you plan to volunteer, please complete the online volunteer form. It should only take a few minutes to complete. You cannot volunteer at school if this is not completed and without it can only be considered a visitor. This must be filled out once each school year.
Definitions
Volunteers are guests who are supporting students, completing tasks, and under the immediate supervision and direction of District licensed personnel.
Visitors are guests who are solely entering the building to conduct business such as participate in a meeting, eat lunch with their student, or attend a school sponsored activity.
To access the form, please click on the following link: https://apps.raptortech.com/Apply/NzU0OmVuLVVT
The safety and security of our students and staff remains our top priority. Every person entering our buildings must have a District ID or a badge printed from the Raptor System.
