Week of August 21 2023
A Message from Mr. Ervin
Good afternoon, Marauder Parents!
First FULL week in the books! It was the best first full week McMillan has ever had! We have an amazing group of both 7th and 8th graders! Thank you all for your help making it a great week!
We passed out badges last week. Your student should have received one. If they did not get one, please have them come to the front office.
Starting Monday, students must wear their ID badge around their neck each day. If a student forgets their ID badge, they need to come to the office to get an ID sticker to wear for the day. Students will be given 2 warnings if they forget to wear their badge to school. Once a student forgets a third time, a discipline infraction will be given. If a student loses their ID, they may purchase a new one in the office for $3.00.
We have been in school now for a full week doing daily reminders about appropriate dress code. Starting Monday we will also be handing out tardies and dress code violations. A few of the main errors we are seeing that need to be corrected by Monday include:
- Nose piercings – you may wear a CLEAR spacer or no nose jewelry at all.
- T-shirts are NOT part of the dress code. This includes wearing a T-shirt OVER another shirt of any kind. The only t-shirts that may be worn are a Wylie ISD T-shirt IF your student is a member of PTA. College t-shirts on Thursdays and Spirit wear every Friday are always permitted. Otherwise, students should follow the regular dress code.
- No visible holes in jeans
- No head coverings
- No slides or house shoes
McMillan PTA Spirit Wear is now available to PRE-ORDER!
Last day to order will be Sunday, August 27th, so we can process this order ASAP. We do not plan on having many extras on hand, so please get your order in now!
STUDENT PTA Members will receive a special tamper proof sticker on their ID badges allowing them to wear spirit wear EVERYDAY! They will also receive 4 free school concession tickets & free entry into the dance in February.
We will pass out stickers and tickets Monday morning before school in the hallway outside the library & during lunch on the stage. If your student is not a PTA member yet, they can join on Monday for only $8. They can also join through our Square site while purchasing spirit wear. Please reach out to Rachel Allen for questions: president@mcmillanjrhighpta.com

5th Period/Lunch
I wanted to give everyone a little more information about this time.
Advisory:
-Every student will have six advisory classes Monday-Wednesday. Two 24 minutes advisory classes those days. During this time students will receive intervention in the following ways:
-8th Grade: Math/ELA/History/Science/Math Progress Learning/Reading Progress Learning.
-7th Grade: Math/Reading/Writing/SEL/Math Progress Learning/Reading Progress Learning.
Our teachers review data from various assessments to decide what needs to be addressed with student learning.
Second Chance:
-Students will attend Second Chance during their lunch time and complete missing assignments that they failed to turn in. Students will eat their lunch with their teacher but are free to leave once the assignment is complete. This is an opportunity for students not a consequence. We want to ensure all our Marauders are mastering the TEKS and not falling behind. Failure to attend Second Chance may result in Saturday School.
Privilege:
-Students will receive Privilege Time on Thursday and Friday. This will start this week. Students will have the opportunity to go to the gyms, media center and a few other areas in the building. This is an important time for teachers as they are meeting in their Professional Learning Communities and Academic Teams during this time.
-In the coming weeks teachers will also use this time to pull students from Privilege to work with students in a small group setting as needed.
Lunch:
-At McMillan we have two lunch periods. We call it the mini mega lunch and is similar to what both High Schools do. This week we split the students up and really focused on lunchroom expectations.
-From here on out students can sit in the cafeteria, the hallways, tables in the hallways, or the gym for lunch. This applies to all students whether they bring their lunch or eat out of the cafeteria. We have enough seating for all students, but many students choose to sit in an alternative setting.
Skyward Schedules
One thing that happens every year is we get several new students the first few days after school starts, and several students withdraw that we did not know about. This causes class sizes to be unbalanced. We will have to go back in and rebalance classes to some extent once the year starts. There should be no teacher changes due to this, but the class order could change for some students. We always try our best to limit this as much as possible.

Stadium Bag Policy
Jr. High Games/Varsity Football Games
Can junior high students attend junior high games without an adult?
Yes! Junior high students are welcome to attend any Wylie ISD junior high athletic event without an adult present.
Are ID badges required at junior high games like home varsity games?
Yes. Students must have their ID badge at all Wylie ISD athletic events.
Can students hang out at the stadium or gym after games?
No. While students may attend games without an adult present, all students must be picked up within 30 minutes of the game ending. If students are not picked up within 30 minutes, they will not be allowed to attend the next junior high game. Of course, we understand that things happen, and we will work with families in extenuating circumstances.
Varsity Football Games
As a reminder, students in eighth grade and below are no longer allowed to attend varsity football games without an adult. Any student in junior high and younger will be turned away at the gate if not accompanied by an adult. These students must also sit with an adult if attending a varsity football game, as there is no longer a junior high section at these games.
All junior high and high school students must have their student ID with them at varsity games. We appreciate your understanding and ongoing support in keeping our kids safe. If you have any questions, please contact my office.
Student ID Badges
Effective the first day of school, all students in grades 7-12 are required to visibly display their student identification badge. It must be on a lanyard around the neck and worn at all times during the school day and at certain campus functions. When your student picks up their new ID badge, they will also be provided with a lanyard at no cost. Students may use their own lanyard as long as it is school-appropriate. As a reminder, student IDs are also used to purchase lunch, issue textbooks and check out library books.
Why the Change?
Wylie ISD regularly reviews its safety plan, and requiring visible IDs for secondary students is something the district has considered for several months. The recommendation was brought forth during a review of the safety plan by the district’s safety and security committee. This committee is composed of local law enforcement, emergency management, parents, teachers, school board members, and district personnel. The district and our partners in law enforcement fully support the committee’s recommendation.
Ensuring a safe learning environment is our top priority, and this new measure will help us quickly distinguish possible unauthorized visitors from McMillan students and staff.
Enforcement
We understand it will take students some time to get accustomed to wearing their ID, and we will work with them on understanding the importance of wearing a visible ID badge while at school. Enforcement will begin Sept. 6. Failure to wear an ID will result in disciplinary action in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct.
Consequences for not wearing a visible ID will range from warnings to in-school suspension for multiple violations. If your student forgets their ID, they will receive a free temporary sticker badge to wear for the day, or they may purchase a new permanent replacement ID for $3.
If you have questions or concerns about the new student ID badge requirement, please don’t hesitate to contact my office. Thank you for your understanding and ongoing support of our school. It’s going to be a great year!
