OMS The Middle Matters
December 2, 2024
Inspiring Excellence. Every Learner. Every day.
Hello OMS Families,
We hope you all enjoyed the long holiday weekend.
The next three weeks will be busy and exciting at OMS as we work our way toward the winter break. There will be Choir, Orchestra, and Band concerts to look forward to, a second Activity Night next Friday, and our final wrap up will be Husky PRIDE Day on December 20. Please watch for information from teachers and advisors for all of these exciting events coming up at OMS and check the schedule below.
As you know, PAW scores [behavior/citizenship grade] determine each student's eligibility for the off campus field trips and/or individual activity sessions on Husky PRIDE Day. We are thrilled to share that 98% of our students qualified for field trips or all three on campus sessions. This means our students have been working hard to keep their PAW scores high and have been demonstrating their Husky PRIDE. Way to go!!!
We are looking forward to a great December to celebrate all the wonderful things happening at OMS.

Husky Pride Day - December 20th
Dec. 2 - 4, all students with a PAW score average of 2.7 or above will have an opportunity to sign up for a field trip. All field trip sign ups must be done by Dec. 4.
Dec. 5 -6 all students with a PAW scored average of 2.69 and below can sign up for activities at OMS.
Payments for the field trips is from Dec. 9 - 11 - NO EXCEPTIONS!
If your student chooses to go on a field trip or an activity with a fee, you will need to pay that fee in Infinite Campus. This fee will become available to pay on Dec 9th and the ability to pay will close on Dec 11th. If payment is not made by Dec 11th, your student will have to choose a different activity. Please look through the list of activities with your student so you can help them decide a suitable option.
On December 20, 2024 we will have our first Husky Pride Day of the year. HPD is a time to celebrate the positive behavior and culture fostered by our OMS students and staff. Students will have the option to participate in school activities or attend off-site field trips. Some of these events are free, while others (primarily field trips) may require a participation fee. Students will use Infinite Campus to sign up for their preferred activities and pay any necessary fees.
The Husky Pride team, with support and input from staff, has developed a set of behavioral expectations linked to our P-A-W scores. An average of all P-A-W scores from Quarter 1 and Quarter 2 will determine the qualifications for participation.
When it is time to sign up, to get an accurate count of participation in activities, we ask that students who will NOT be attending Husky Pride Day sign up for the group "Not Attending HPD."
We believe that Husky Pride Day is a valuable enrichment experience and a reward for our students. We look forward to your child's participation.

FCS Week - December 2-6th
Upcoming: Activity Night - Dec 13th
The OMS Student Council would like to invite all OMS students to our Lorax themed Activity Night @ OMS on Friday, December 13th from 7-9 pm. Here are some details below:
All eligible students are invited to attend @ 7 pm. No one will be allowed into the building before that time.
Student eligibility will depend on appropriate PAW scores, any unserved detention, and any suspensions.
Students may only enter the front doors on 15th St. They need to be picked up at 9 pm SHARP from the front doors on 15th St. Students will not be let in anywhere else. (Best Buddies and Student Council leaders can be dropped off and picked up at Cafeteria doors in the main parking lot.)
$5 at the door includes access to Activity Night (cake walk, video game truck, photo booth, BINGO, swimming, DJ, dime toss, and other fun activities).
Students MUST bring their student IDs. If their ID is lost they can purchase a new one for $5 from the office BEFORE Dec. 13.
If students purchased an “Activity Night Sticker” for $15 during Open House, we will check them in on a separate line.
OMS expectations and PAW behavior will be enforced.
Extra spending money is optional but necessary for dime toss, raffles, & concessions (all proceeds go to support the OMS Student Council and scholarship funds).
Pool will be open for swimming and lifeguards on duty from Owatonna Park and Recreation.
If you’d like to volunteer for this opportunity, please email jdrabek@isd761.org right away and she’ll get the process started to get you involved.

Orchestra Ornament Decorating Party - Dec 13th
Orchestra Ornament decorating party will be on Friday, December 13th from 2:30 - 3:30 in the cafeteria.
Pick Up & Drop Off Procedures
Winter weather is coming, which can make our morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up even more stressful. Please review this map and follow the guidelines to allow traffic to flow smoothly and get everyone in and out promptly.
There is absolutely NO dropping off or picking up on 15th Street when buses are present.
If you are entering the parking lot from the South, please enter the right lane. This way, people entering from the North can enter the left lane at the same time. Changing lanes can happen once you are in the parking lot to keep traffic flowing on the street. Please move to the right-hand lane to drop off your student. There is a sidewalk surrounding the entire parking lot. You should drive as far forward (yes, past the entrance) as possible to drop off your student. If it will take longer to drop off your student, please pull into a parking space instead of using the drop-off lane. Please only turn right when exiting the parking lot. This is essential to keeping traffic moving. Waiting to turn left backs up the entire parking lot. These backups spill over into the streets.
Remember, we are all trying to get our kids to school safely and on time. We all have our own destinations to get to afterward. Be courteous and follow the rules!

Preventing Class Disruptions
Learning is taken very seriously at OMS; therefore, we try to keep classroom interruptions to a minimum:
- Please do not bring or arrange deliveries of bouquets, balloons, stuffed animals and the like to students. They will not be accepted.
- Encourage students to remember their Chromebooks, lunches, gym clothes, musical instruments, etc. We do not have staff to deliver these items, nor do we call the classrooms to have students come down and pick up the items.
- Make afterschool arrangements with your student before school, if possible. We do not interrupt classrooms for these types of messages.
