A Safe and Suportive School for Every Student
Greetings South Tahoe Middle School families,
At LTUSD, we are committed to creating a safe and supportive environment where every student can thrive. Our schools are a place for students to learn, grow, and feel protected, and we are dedicated to upholding the rights of all students while ensuring their safety. We value the diversity of our community, and all families are warmly welcomed as part of our school family.
In light of recent policy changes at the federal level, many families may be feeling anxious about the safety of their children, especially those who may have concerns about their immigration status. California maintains its strong protections for immigrants, with policies that safeguard the rights of undocumented individuals, particularly in schools. The California Constitution guarantees all students, regardless of immigration status, the right to a free public education. Schools in California are generally not allowed to ask about a student's immigration status, and they cannot share that information with federal authorities without a court order or legal obligation. This means that, regardless of a child’s immigration background, they are entitled to attend school safely without fear of being reported, interviewed or taken, without a valid warrant.
Our staff has been discussing this concern and the potential impact and stress that may be added to our families. We understand the threat of immigration enforcement could have a significant impact on our students' ability to thrive. If you still have concerns about your child’s safety at school, we encourage you to talk to one of our team members or me.Our top priority is the safety and success of every single student at our school. We believe that all students, regardless of their immigration status, deserve a safe and supportive learning environment.
California law strongly protects the rights of all students, including those who may have concerns about their immigration status. Schools in California are prohibited from inquiring about a student's immigration status and cannot share this information with federal authorities without proper legal authorization. This means that all students, regardless of their background, have the right to attend school without fear of deportation.
We understand that recent policy changes may be causing anxiety for some families. We want to assure you that our school remains a welcoming and inclusive place for all students. If you have any concerns about your child's safety or well-being, please do not hesitate to speak with me or a member of our school staff. We are here to support you and your child.
Sincerely,
Cindy Martínez, Principal of South Tahoe Middle School
Sinceramente,
Cindy Martínez, directora escolar de South Tahoe Middle School
