What Will We Learned this Unit?
Math: This unit, students will continue to explore their knowledge of Place Value and addition and subtraction and extend their thinking to numbers within 40. Our students have taken off with this module and have already completed 7 lessons in just the first week! By the next newsletter, I expect students to have completed up to lesson 18. The objectives for lessons 1 through 18 are as follows:
Objectives:
Compare the efficiency of counting by ones and counting by tens.
Use the place value chart to record and name tens and ones within a two-digit number.
Interpret two-digit numbers as either tens and some ones or as all ones.
Write and interpret two-digit numbers as addition sentences that combine tens and ones.
Identify 10 more, 10 less, 1 more, and 1 less than a two-digit number.
Use dimes and pennies as representations of tens and ones.
Compare two quantities, and identify the greater or lesser of the two given numerals.
Compare quantities and numerals from left to right.
Use the symbols >, =, and < to compare quantities and numerals.
Add and subtract tens from a multiple of 10.
Add tens to a two-digit number.
Use counting on and the make ten strategy when adding across a ten.
Use single-digit sums to support solutions for analogous sums to 40.
Add ones and ones or tens and tens.
ELA: In ELA, students will explore communication through writing friendly letters to a class at another local Islamic School. Students have been introduced to the parts of a friendly letter and will develop their grammar through writing.
Writing Standards:
- Use singular and plural nouns with matching verbs in basic sentences (e.g., He hops; We hop).
- Use personal, possessive, and indefinite pronouns (e.g., I, me, my; they, them, their, anyone, everything).
- Use verbs to convey a sense of past, present, and future (e.g., Yesterday I walked home; Today I walk home; Tomorrow I will walk home).
- Use frequently occurring adjectives.
- Use frequently occurring conjunctions (e.g., and, but, or, so, because).
- Use determiners (e.g., articles, demonstratives).
- Use frequently occurring prepositions (e.g., during, beyond, toward).
- Produce and expand complete simple and compound declarative, interrogative, imperative, and exclamatory sentences in response to prompts.
Reading Standards:
- Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension.
- Read grade-level text with purpose and understanding.
- Read grade-level text orally with accuracy, appropriate rate, and expression on successive readings.
- Use context to confirm or self-correct word recognition and understanding, rereading as necessary.
Science/Social Studies: In Social Studies, students will explore signs and symbols as means of communication. They will also explore how holidays and symbols can represent our values, the human characteristics of an environment, and how sounds convey meaning and communicate messages.
The culminating task for this unit will be for students to create their own code using symbols to represent each letter of the alphabet. Their final letter to their pen pal will be written using this code! It will be very exciting to see it all come together!
