Athens High School
Some thoughts for the starting school year
A letter from the Principal ~ June 2024
Dear Troy Athens High School Community,
As we wrap up another incredible school year, I am filled with pride and excitement for all that we have accomplished together. As we celebrated on June 1st with our Commencement Exercise, I want to say congratulations to the Class of 2024! Your hard work, dedication, and resilience have been truly inspiring, and we can't wait to see all the amazing things you will achieve in the future.
This year has been marked by remarkable achievements across all areas of our school. We celebrated State Championships in Boys Soccer, Girls Powerlifting, and United Synchronized Swimming, showcasing the exceptional talent and determination of our athletes. Our theatre department wowed audiences with fantastic productions of "The Wizard of Oz" and "The Play Where Everything Goes Wrong," demonstrating the creativity and commitment of our students and staff.
Our arts programs continue to set the standard, with our band, orchestra, and choir receiving numerous accolades and awards. These programs not only highlight the artistic abilities of our students but also their dedication to excellence.
We had an incredible Charity Week, raising an impressive $166,000 to support the Love for a Child nonprofit, a testament to the generosity and spirit of our school community. The Science Olympiad team excelled in their competitions, and we were thrilled to bring gymnastics back to AHS, adding another exciting dimension to our athletic offerings.
I am also proud to celebrate that Troy Athens was named a College Board AP Honor Roll school and is the only high school in Michigan to be recognized as a National School of Character. These honors reflect our unwavering commitment to academic excellence and character development.
Looking into next school year, we are excited to welcome our new Assistant Principal, Mr. Benjamin Cronin, who brings a wealth of experience and enthusiasm to our administrative team and school community.
Finally, we have started the initial phases of designing the new Athens High School. Students, staff, and administration have collaborated with architects and designers to offer feedback on features we would like to see in Red Hawk country in the upcoming years. With the support of the community with the 2022 Bond, we have already started to upgrade athletic facilities and will continue to make Athens a state-of-the-art school that meets the needs of all learners.
Thank you to all our families and community members for your continuous support. Enjoy the summer recess, and we look forward to another fantastic school year in 2024-2025!
Warm regards,
Vernon Burden

Athens Opens the Red Hawk Retreat!
The Red Hawk Retreat is a sensory room designed to provide students with a dedicated space to reset, regulate, and relax. This initiative was envisioned and brought to life by students who recognized the need for such a place in our school. Through hard work and determination, they successfully obtained a TFEE grant to make their vision a reality. After much hard work and determination, we are excited to introduce the Red Hawk Retreat to you. We are thrilled to announce the Red Hawk Retreat and announce a soft opening. Starting June 3rd the room will be available for student use during 5th and 6th hour. Our goal is to have the room open full time during the 2024-2025 school year.
Alyssa Christensen, Aurora Gignac, Emeryn Pittel, Kaylin Reed and Isis Revell envisioned and led the project, with many other students contributing their time and talent along the way.
How to Access the Red Hawk Retreat
Entry Enter through the main counseling office door to access the sensory room.
Usage Time Spend up to 5 minutes in the sensory room whenever you need a break to reset, regulate, or relax.

As another school year draws to a close, we want to thank the many volunteers who donated their time and talent to the Red Hawk family during this school year. It’s the little things that you individually, as parents, and collectively, as Booster Clubs, do that help to make the big picture of Athens look so good and run so well. We appreciate your involvement, but we especially are grateful for your concern for the good of not just your child(ren), but the entire Red Hawk community.
Class of 2025: Senior Portrait, Yearbook, Senior Recognition Ad Info
The following few pages contain everything you need to know regarding senior portraits, purchasing yearbooks and purchasing senior recognition ads.
SENIOR PORTRAITS
Prestige:
The following page contains a detailed letter from Prestige Portraits. Prestige is the preferred photographer of Athens. The yearbook program automatically receives the portraits of all students who take their portraits with Prestige. Once the portrait is taken, students will need to select their preferred pose; then, yearbook related is taken care of for them.
• Students can make their own appointment at any Prestige location anytime before the deadline.
• Athens will also be providing two dates in the fall for students to get their portraits taken at school for FREE (this is only for the headshot pose; any other desired senior poses would require an appointment).
• Prestige will be at Athens on October 10th and November 18th – sign up will happen in the fall.
• Students who take their headshot with Prestige also receive a copy of the senior composite. This is a free gift from Prestige that includes all students photographed by Prestige. Because it is a gift from Prestige, students who do not take a photo with Prestige cannot be included. However, the senior composite is not the same thing as the yearbook; students who do not take a headshot with Prestige can be included in the yearbook (see below for more info).
Independent Photographers:
While we do prefer students to enjoy the convenience and professionalism of Prestige, we understand that some may prefer to use an independent photographer. If you would like to submit a senior portrait from an independent photographer, the required specifications are below:
• Must be an INDOOR headshot photo (just shoulders and head; outdoor and full body poses are not permitted for the senior headshot section of the yearbook)
• Must be 1.375" by 1.875" at 300 dpi in jpeg format
• Must have a WESTCOTT MOONLIGHT CLOUDSCAPE background
• Must be emailed to athensyearbook5475@gmail.com by Monday, December 9th, 2024 at 11:59 pm
• Late submissions will NOT be accepted.
Note: If you do not take a headshot with Prestige or submit your own from an independent photographer, we will include your school ID photo.
PURCHASING YEARBOOKS:
• Yearbooks must be purchased online at www.jostens.com
• Search for Troy Athens High School once there
• More info/dates on following pages

U.S. Selective Service
Federal Law requires that all men living in the U.S. to register with Selective Service. Young men must register with Selective Service within 30 days of their 18th birthday. They can submit their registration information when they turn 17 and 3 months and it takes only a few minutes at www.sss.gov or they can pick up a registration card at a local post office. When they turn 18, their registration will be processed automatically. Most importantly, they will have complied with the registration requirement which is the law. An acknowledgement card will be mailed to them with their Selective Service number.
Why is it so important for young men to register with Selective Service? By complying with the law, they stay eligible for programs and benefits connected to registration, such as college loans and grants, federal employment, job training, citizenship for immigrant men seeking to become citizens, and driver's license eligibility in most states. If you have further questions, please see your Counselor.
