Anglo European School
Bulletin for w/c 8th July 2024 Week 2
AES participates in Royal Shakespeare Company's production of "A Midsummer Night's Dream"
The Anglo Players very proudly presented their production of A Midsummer Night's Dream at The Mercury Theatre on the 2nd July. Our long association with the Royal Shakespeare Company has led to another successful dramatisation of one of the bard's most loved plays. The superb performance expertly directed by Miss McNeillie allowed an opportunity to showcase some of our finest talent in Year 8. The captivating Oberon played by Yaamin proved that perfect timing and a commanding presence can dominate a stage. However, the band of Puck's played by Matteo, Aryan, Maia and Vivian added sparkle and a generous helping of mischievousness to proceedings.
The arrival of the lovers took the performance to an even higher level of energy. Hermia and Helena (Amelie and Fabi) argued intensely proving that Shakespearean dialogue is not an obstacle but an opportunity to use language as a weapon. Demetrius and Lysander (Jasper and Simeon) competed for fair Helena's attentions; the execution of some complicated stage fighting was particularly impressive. A fast paced, high energy and magical performance beautifully supported by the fairies, fairies who love the gossip... A huge well done to Tatiana, Lucia, Avni, Jessica, Viola, Camille and Kashaan.
Tremendous congratulations to the whole cast and thanks to the RSC, especially theatre director Fi Ross who visited us here at Anglo and gave feedback on how the show was coming along.
Anglo is firmly established as a partner school for the RSC associate schools programme. We are already looking forward to next year's production!
IB Collaborative Science Project
The collaborative sciences project (CSP) gives students the opportunity to work together in an interdisciplinary setting. They work towards a common goal related to a real-world issue, pursued through the lens of the scientific method.
Our Physicists, Chemists and Biologists worked collaboratively, investigating and researching about the current Anglo building constructions. Drawing on comparisons between the current C block (built in 2015) and E block (built in the 70s) Anglo students investigated ventilation, insulation and looked into how energy efficient the buildings are. Some of our students, contributing to a future reconstruction of the E block, were able to design a future laboratory.
Throughout the project, the emphasis is on the experience of collaborative problem-solving, the focus being the process rather than the product. Working collaboratively in a team requires a certain level of self-awareness and empathy with other team members. It also requires a high level of motivation and two-way communication. The opportunity to reflect on these factors, in terms of what went well and lessons learned, will be invaluable for future collaborations and the personal growth of each individual student.
Students visit Cambridge University
Lower Sixth students, Mary and Eva met with Mrs Gee to talk about how they were part of a highly selective online programme at Cambridge this year and from that group they were amongst the 50% selected to spend a day at Cambridge. Eva studied French and really enjoyed a wealth of pre-reading in French culture, language and communication. She is hoping to study French and History as a joint Honours at Edinburgh University. Mary enjoyed the study of history as part of this course and developed her critical and analytical reading skills and could see how she could apply these higher order thinking skills to her current studies. Mary hopes to apply to Cambridge and highly valued the mock interviews and application preparation work that Cambridge provided as part of this course.
Both students were invited to a formal dinner and celebration event at Cambridge where they were presented with books to recognise their work on this prestigious course.
Induction Days for our next cohort of Lower Sixth students
Our Lower Sixth Induction days have inspired our new Lower Sixth applicants to take their places in our International Sixth Form next year. Over 200 students attended an 'Anglo Induction' and 'IB Ethos' Workshop and taster lessons in each of their chosen subjects. On the second day, students also heard from Tom Dixon (CEO and founder of SHFT) who talked about the importance of taking all opportunities given, through his analogy 'grab the lobster!' We look forward to seeing all students on GCSE results day to confirm their admission to our Sixth Form.
Year 7/8 Awards Evening
Congratulations to our worthy winners from the annual Year 7 and 8 Awards Evening held at the Anglia Ruskin University.
The evening was a great opportunity for students to be recognised for their academic achievement and progress and was celebrated by parents and teachers alike. Mrs Gee said "It was a pleasure to see so many of our Year 7 and 8 students celebrate their achievements. We wish them continued success for the coming years."
Special awards were received by these amazing students, who have gone above and beyond. The Governors' Award, given to the student who has made the most significant contribution to the school community and local community, was awarded to Michael. The International Award, for the most significant contribution to the promotion of international understanding went to Aryan.
The Year 7 Year Leader Award was given to Sofia and the Year 8 Year Leader Award to Audrey. This year's Headteacher's Award for academic excellence was given to Year 7 student Eadaoin, who was nominated in no less than 6 of her subjects.
Well done to all this year's winners!
Alumni Visit
As part of our destinations curriculum, the Lower Sixth recently heard from four recent Anglo graduates, who described their career journeys to date. Lula has just finished her second year at the University of Manchester studying Politics and Spanish. She is about to spend a year in South America for her year abroad. Long term she hopes to work in South American politics. Becky similarly is at the end of her second year but studying teaching at Brighton. This time next year she will be a qualified PE teacher. Grace's piqued lots of students interest when describing her apprenticeship at the Bank of England. Finally, Blake is a full time Zookeeper at Marwell Zoo near Winchester. The range of pathways described by our alumni was inspirational to the current Lower Sixth, and they asked probing questions to understand the advantages and myths associated with each potential pathway. Combined with the recent UCAS Fair and ARU Medicine visits, our students are well informed to begin their applications. Students are now drafting their personal statements, which are due in September.
Future medics visit ARU!
Lower Sixth students interested in studying medicine visited Anglia Ruskin University's medical school last week. They spoke to current ARU undergraduates, got involved with example seminars, took UCAT mock assessments and had a campus tour. We look forward to supporting this cohort with their applications.
Thinking Reading Programme Success
Mrs Gee, Mr Marshall and Mrs Stroud met with Mazie and Jamal who have made amazing progress through our very successful Thinking Reading Programme.
Mrs Hart, who is responsible for this programme, said: "Mazie has made the most fantastic progress in order to graduate from our Thinking Reading Programme. From the start she has demonstrated an unswerving desire to improve, and a positivity and maturity which can only be applauded and serves as a role-model for all other students at our school. I wish her all the very best for the future as she enters Year 11".
"Jamal has summed up so many of the qualities of what it means to be an Anglo student in the course of graduating from our Thinking Reading Programme. He has been inquisitive, enterprising, articulate, courageous, reflective and creative. He has made all of us immensely proud, and is a role model for what other young people can achieve with a positive attitude and a desire to push themselves out of their comfort zone in order to improve. Very well done Jamal!"

BEELEIGH LANGUAGE HUBS NEWS
This week, Bernardette Holmes MBE, NCLE Director (National Consortium for Foreign Languages) and Hannah Jack from DfE visited the school to meet with leaders of our national Languages Hub to evaluate our first year leading this national project. During the course of the day, they witnessed the inaugural year's work through a focused pedagogical visit where they observed languages lessons, met with student ambassadors and then conducted a strategic review and action planning meeting with Mrs Gee, Mrs Peeters and our specialist teachers of languages. We are looking forward to working with the five spoke schools across the Eastern region in the coming year to enhance the provision and teaching of languages nationally. Bernardette Holmes MBE said "What an excellent model and example of how a lead hub school takes forward its partners and builds system leadership for the future!". Hannah Jack added, "I appreciated being able to speak to the pupils about their own language learning journeys and how the brilliant languages offer at your school has been instrumental in shaping their plans for the future."
SPORT
50th Anniversary Cricket Match
As part of Anglo's 50th celebrations, past and present staff played a game of cricket again Ingatestone cricket club, who featured both past and present Anglo students. Ingatestone batted first and got off to a fast start after a few let-offs in the field. Mr Crossley steadied the ship with 4 wickets in the middle overs to slow the run rate down and restrict Ingatestone to 153 off 20 overs.
Former PE teacher, Mr Whettell, opened the batting but lost 2 batting partners in the first over with Mr Ashworth and Mr Kamal failing to trouble the scorers after some good bowling from Harry. In strode former headteacher Mr Barrs to try and steady the ship. Both Mr Whettell and Mr Barrs rolled back the years putting on an unbeaten 100 runs! Mr Whettell finally retired on 50 not out after 2 glorious straight 6's. Mr Barrs missed out on his 50 after being bowled on 48 by a good delivery from Evan. Mr Richards did his best to drag the teachers over the line with some fine striking of the ball, but fell to a good ball from Freddie after scoring 31 off 12 balls. Anglo finished 11 short of the target but everyone involved enjoyed the game which was played in good spirit.
Congratulations to Lower Sixth student Charlie who completed a 24 hour relay swim, raising money for a charity called Level Water, who pay for children with disabilities to learn to swim.
He raised over £500 on his own, which helped the event to raise an extremely impressive amount of just over £30,000. Some of this money will go towards the outdoor swimming site that Charlie works at called Trifarm https://trifarm.co.uk/, and will support them in making the site more accessible to those with disabilities.
Donate your unwanted Exam Revision Books
Year 11 and Upper Sixth students and parents, if you have any revision books that you no longer need please consider donating these to the school as these are a fantastic resource that we can keep in our Library for the next cohort. Thank you for your continued support.
Donation of School Uniform
As we approach the end of the school year, we are reaching out to ask for your support in an important initiative. Many students outgrow their school uniforms before they wear out, and we would love to give those gently used items a new life by providing them to families in need.
If you have any items of school uniform that your child has outgrown, but are still in good condition, please consider donating them to our school. Your generous donations will help ensure that all students have access to the appropriate attire.
How You Can Help:
- What to Donate: Gently used school uniform in good condition (no tears, stains, or excessive wear).
- Where to Donate: Please drop off your items at School Office during school hours.
Thank you for your generosity and for helping us foster a supportive and inclusive school environment.
ANGLO INTERNATIONAL CUISINE
Raspberry and White Chocolate Cheesecake
(Allergens - dairy/gluten)
Raspberries are an aromatic fruit – they can be sweet or tart, what's more, they are in season at the moment, making them more flavoursome. They are proven to lower blood pressure, and provide potassium to the body. They also contain a mineral called manganese – which helps bone growth and regulate blood sugar.
This recipe is not mine, but one I use very often as it is easy to make and reliable – there's not much that can go wrong with it. The combination of raspberries and white chocolate is utterly delicious and works so well with the mixture of ginger and digestive biscuits.
Do give it a try – you won’t be disappointed.
(Recipe taken from Stylist Magazine 13 years ago)
Happy Cooking
Mrs Prema–Gadhia
Ingredients:
● 100g digestive biscuits – crumbled
● 100g ginger biscuits – crumbled
● 100g melted butter
● 300g white cooking chocolate
● 180ml whipping cream
● 500g mascarpone
● 25g caster sugar
● 1 tsp vanilla essence
● 2 punnets raspberries
● 50g dark chocolate – melted
Method:
1) For the base - combine the biscuits and butter and press onto the base of a 23cm (9in) spring-form tin.
Put it in the fridge to set while you make the filling.
2) Filling – place the white chocolate in a heatproof bowl over a pan of simmering (not boiling) water. (This method is called Bain marie). Allow to cool slightly.
3) In another bowl, whip the cream until it’s thick.
4) Mix in the mascarpone, sugar and vanilla essence.
5) Stir in the melted white chocolate into the cream mixture.
6) At this point, you can either stir in the raspberries gently into the mixture (being very careful they don’t break) or simply sprinkle them on top once the topping has set. (I prefer the latter).
7) Spoon the mixture on top of the biscuit base and place in the fridge to set for 8 – 24 hours.
8) To serve, melt the dark chocolate and use a piping bag to drizzle over the cheesecake and decorate with more raspberries.
