Message from Mrs. Phelan
Dear Families,
I wanted to take a moment to express my gratitude for your continued support and involvement in our school community. It has been a fantastic week at school, filled with exciting events and activities that have truly enriched our students' learning experiences.
This morning, we had a wonderful school-wide Memorial Day Program that allowed our students to honor and remember the sacrifices of those who have served our country. The level of respect and understanding displayed by our students was truly heartwarming, and I am proud of each and every one of them for their thoughtful participation.
As we reach the midpoint of our end-of-year assessments, I am impressed by the hard work and dedication shown by our students. I have no doubt that their efforts will pay off as we continue to strive for academic excellence together.
Looking ahead to next week, I am excited to announce that we will be hosting Field Day on Thursday. It promises to be a day filled with fun, teamwork, and friendly competition for our students. Additionally, we have a variety of engaging classroom projects planned that will spark creativity and collaboration among our students. I am confident that these activities will further enhance their learning and make for a memorable end to the school year.
Thank you once again for your continued support and partnership in your child's education. Together, we can create a positive and enriching learning environment for our students. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to me.
Wishing you a safe and enjoyable Memorial Day weekend.
With Gratitude,
Stacy
Memorial Day Assembly
At the Lowell School's Memorial Day assembly, students gathered to honor the brave men and women who have served in the armed forces. The assembly featured heartfelt poems, patriotic songs, and a moment of silence to pay respect to those who have sacrificed their lives for the nation. Students participated actively, demonstrating their gratitude and understanding of the significance of Memorial Day.
Field Day
We are excited to announce that our Field Day will take place on Thursday, May 30th, at Victory Field. This day is always fun and memorable for our students, filled with various activities and games.
Please note the following important details:
- Parents who have not been pre-approved (CORI) are not permitted to eat lunch with their children. This policy helps us ensure the safety and smooth operation of the event.
- Parents may not excuse or dismiss students early from Victory Field. All students will transition back to school with their homeroom teacher.
We appreciate your cooperation and understanding. We look forward to a fantastic Field Day! If you have any questions, please let us know.
Pride Posters
Schools are communities for students, educators, and parents to come together and form a safe place of learning, accepting people of all races, ethnicities, religions, gender identities, sexual orientations, and many other differences that make us unique and special individuals; everyone is welcomed with open arms.
Pride Month serves as a time to not only spotlight the history and impact of the LGBTQ+ community but also work towards creating a diverse and inclusive environment inside and outside the classroom; a notion that is important to do all year round.
At the Lowell School, we strive to create inclusive spaces for our students that promote learning and understanding.
We will hold an optional activity for our students in grades 3-4-5 to celebrate Watertown Pride. On Friday, May 31st, from 1:45 to 2:15 PM, students will have the opportunity to create posters in support of this event.
Participation in this activity is entirely optional. Students who choose to take part will gather in the cafeteria to work on their posters. Those who prefer not to participate will remain in their classrooms and continue their regular activities.
We believe this is a wonderful opportunity for students to express their creativity and support for the community. Students who wish to participate are invited to bring their coloring materials to use during the poster-making session. However, we will also provide basic supplies for those who need them.
We encourage interested students to join in, but we also respect each family's decision regarding their child's participation.
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us.
Curriculum News
Next year students will have all new literacy units across grades K - 5! We are so excited to see these topics come to life through their reading, writing and class discussions. The first unit (called Modules in Wit & Wisdom) are all listed below. During the literacy block teachers will read aloud carefully selected texts and use them as a guide for class discussions. Each unit comes with vocabulary lists and multiple connected books that students will read across the genres including fiction, nonfiction, and poetry. The curriculum also integrates works of art across the grades.
You will be hearing from your teacher in the fall about the specific books and activities your student will be learning about in their first module of the year and teachers have already begun planning these new units.
Bike & Pedestrian Safety Sessions
On Tuesday, May 21st, students from 1st to 3rd grade had the opportunity to participate in a pedestrian safety session and meet Sarah Ashebir, the Safe Routes to School Outreach Coordinator for Watertown. On the same day, students in grades 4 and 5 attended an assembly about bike safety in the Learning Commons led by Ms. Ashebir.

Golden Leopard
We are amazed at how many students have been spotted! We are so proud to see children in the school working hard to demonstrate their commitment to our core values.
The Golden Leopard reward was created to celebrate our students. If a student earns a leopard spot for each core value in one week, they will receive the Golden Leopard reward.
They will receive a special certificate; their names will be announced during the morning messages and appear in the family newsletter.
During this week, we had two students that earned the Golden Leopard. Please congratulate Vincent and Ella Anastasi!
