Principal's Message
Happy Friday!
I hope everyone is enjoying this wintery season. As we have colder weather, I want to remind everyone to send students in warm winter gear (warmer coats, hats, gloves, scarfs, etc.). We try to send the students outside for recess as much as possible. For recess, if the “feels like/wind chill” temperature is below 10° (at 9° or lower) or too rainy and wet, children will remain indoors. We follow accuweather.com for our forecast each day.
Please make sure students are coming on time! - In the past few weeks, I've noticed a larger amount of students getting to school later; after 7:45. I wonder if this is partly due to the weather being colder so more students are being driven to school. As a result, the car lane seems more busy, particularly right at the end of the entry window (7:30-7:45).
It is really important for students to be in their classrooms by 7:50 so they are not missing any instruction. Students may enter the building starting at 7:30 (8:30 on Wednesdays). Now that the weather is colder, families may want to consider leaving for school a few minutes earlier.
Medications - I want to remind families that medications, either prescribed or over-the-counter (including cough drops), should NOT be sent to school with students without a medication authorization form on file with the health office. This form needs to be completed by their physician and also signed by a parent/guardian.
Have a great weekend!

What's On Your Plate? Family Recipe Contest
The D34 Food & Nutrition Services Department wants to serve your favorite family recipe on the D34 lunch menu this spring.
Submit a recipe for an entree or side dish (fruit, vegetable, or grain). All recipes will be reviewed by a panel of Food & Nutrition Services staff members. Finalists will be updated to meet the federal nutrition guidelines and then tested and rated by students.
The winning recipe will be featured on the school menu this spring! The winning student(s) also will be invited to help serve their recipe at lunch.
Last year, over 300 students at 5 of the District’s schools sampled the recipe finalists and selected the winning recipe. The winning recipe was shared by a Lyon Family and featured on our Spring menu, Yum Yum Chicken! It remains a favorite menu item at both Middle Schools this year. Please submit your favorite family recipe this year!
Glenview Public Library and Niles-Main Public Library visit our LRC!
This week, we had two full days in which Frani Sherman and Jarrett Dapier joined us in the Hoffman School LRC to introduce our 4th and 5th graders to the amazing homework help resources available with a public library card!
Over 300 students logged in with public library cards and were able to look up topics of their choice for their Genius Hour projects and their nonfiction reading and writing assignments. We saw everything from Taylor Swift, to Guatemalan Holidays to Vacuna dolphins. Students were so excited to see how the public library can expand on and improve on the resources they have here at Hoffman School.
The best part of the visit however, was to see the connections between people. Students and faculty (and some volunteer parents) were reunited with Frani and Jarrett "their" public library people. This is exactly what we were hoping for. Students and families seeing that our schools and public libraries can be helpful in tandem...leading to a possible exponential increase in how we bring our families the support and services they need.
We are looking forward to further collaborations and of course, fun!
Giant thanks to Glenview and Niles-Maine for supporting the 24/7 learning of all of our students. Your outreach is appreciated and impactful. Sending us professional and outgoing people like Frani and Jarrett took Hoffman School to a whole new level this week.

The Hoffman Band Practices with the Pleasant Ridge Band via Zoom!
The Hoffman 5th grade Advanced Band and Ms. Dobias did a video share with the Pleasant Ridge 5th grade band and their director, Mike Collins-Dowden (Mr CD). The Hoffman band is playing "Shoot for the Moon" which was composed by Mr. CD. Since the two bands have rehearsal at the same time, it was not possible for Mr. CD to visit to listen to the Hoffman band and give feedback, so we did a video exchange. Mr. CD helped the band improve their energy to make the song sound more exciting. The Pleasant Ridge Band then played and Ms. Dobias was able to give feedback. The students were excited to see and hear each other and receive valuable insight from another director.

Holiday Helper 2024
A few Holiday Helper Reminders:
- All donations should be dropped off on Saturday, December 14th
- Please wrap the wish list gift items in gift bags with tissue paper only
- For food items:
- All food items should be placed into a sturdy box
- No designated family numbers need to be indicated on each box
- We will collect food boxes based on how many families we support
- The recipient families will be picking up their items the same day in the afternoon, so it is important to have all items dropped off on this date
Finally, our Holiday Helper program still needs a few more caring families. We have several slots open for Aldi gift cards and families to support.
Thank you for your continued support in making our school community a brighter place for everyone during this holiday season.
