Look at the fraction below. There are 4 EQUAL pieces. To build 1 whole you must add together4 pieces or compose the fraction with all four pieces 1/4 + 1/4 + 1/4 + 1/4 = 4/4 or 1 whole.
Each fractional part or "unit" add up to = 1 whole as determined by the number in the denominator. If the parts or units EXCEED the number in the denominator it is NOT PROPER but IMPROPER and GREATER than 1
