GIVE West College and Career Day
College and Career Day at GIVE was held on April 3rd . Career day is intended to expose students to potential colleges, careers, and military service. GIVE's Career day provided an opportunity for students to connect what they are learning in school with the real world.
Some of our guests included Georgia Gwinnett College, Gwinnett Technical College, Life University, Gwinnett County Police Department, Cornerstone Outreach, Atlanta Beauty & Barber Academy, the Army, and District Attorney Patsy Austin-Gatson.
Resources from Our Counselors
This year has been fantastic! It is hard to believe that it is coming to an end. Farewell, 7am classes! Hello, beaches and bbqs, daydreams and social lives! For many, summer break is a time to relax, enjoy time with family and friends, but it should also include some time for reading.
Research suggests that students lose one month of learning during the summer. Games and puzzles are a great way for kids to brush up on the basics while having fun at the same time. Whether it’s a game geared specifically toward teaching kids math skills or a learning activity that helps them brush up on vocabulary, there are plenty of ways to get children engaged and help them flex their brain power without turning it into a tutoring session.
The end of a school year can put students as well as parents on stress overload. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed.
Here are some practical tips to help parents and students with managing stress during this summer vacation:
· Schedule fun. ...
· Resist the urge to overschedule.
· Set aside time each day. ... (read, practice math, help someone else)
· Encourage your child to try something new this summer. ...(find a new hobby)
· Limit technology. ...
· Create structure and set boundaries.
Whether you are exiting GIVE or returning next August, the counseling department hopes that you will accomplish great things.
Give yourself permission to be successful, believe in yourself, you are more capable than you know!
Parenting Tips of the Week
Pathways2Life
Pathways2Life (P2L) is a prevention agency focusing on youth and young adult mental wellness through education, brief intervention, and support services.
Pathways2Life is committed to PREVENT addiction before it happens in this next generation. P2L educates students on the risks associated with early use. By being in the schools, P2L has the unique opportunity to engage students and help them identify risks associated with early use, make wise choices and live purposefully. There is a transition zone that exists between the ages of 13-20 where students are in the most danger for developing high-risk behavioral patterns. This presents an opportunity for Pathways2Life to engage students and help them to identify risks, choose wisely and live purposefully during those years which are traditionally middle and high school.
PathwaysLife2 partners with schools to transform lives.
