From Anna Davis, Assistant Principal
Dear Kelly Community,
This week marks the end of quarter one. Teachers will take time this week and next week to grade and prepare report cards to share your child’s progress with you. Report cards will be distributed virtually this year, so please read the section on report cards below to ensure you know how to access your child’s report card.
We have transitioned to colder, rainier weather, so please make sure your child dresses for the weather. We try to hold outdoor recess daily knowing how important is to provide time for kids to run and play. Our lost and found has many jackets and sweatshirts, so if your child is missing some outdoor gear, please visit the cafeteria and look for your child’s missing items.
This edition of the community newsletter is chock full of important information about:
PPS Dress Code Policy
Community Budget Survey from the Superintendent
Parent Café (Wednesday, 10/30)
How to access your student’s report card
Parent Teacher Conferences
Sun School Update
English Languages Arts Curriculum
Immunizations
Vision and Hearing Screening

Take care,
Anna Davis

PPS Dress Code Policy
From time to time students might want to dress up to come to school. When those times come up, it is important to remember the PPS Dress Code policy. Students cannot ever wear the following clothes at school:
- Clothes that cover the face (masks)
- Clothes that obstruct adult line of sight (oversized)
- Clothes that restrict the movement of others (oversized, inflatable, etc)
- Clothes that depict stereotypes about another culture
- Clothes that depict violence (weapons, fake blood, etc)
If a student's clothes violate PPS dress code policy, the student will be required to change their clothes before being allowed to return to class.
Fake weapons are considered a "prohibited item" according to PPS policy and will be confiscated.
We ask that you keep all of this in mind when deciding whether or not the clothes your student wears to school on 10/31 are appropriate.
Superintendent Budget Survey
Over the next several weeks and months, PPS will be seeking family input for how to move forward in light of a projected $40 million budget shortfall. One way that families can provide feedback is by filling out this community survey.
Parent Café - 10/30 @ 8:00 AM in the Library
Join us for our upcoming Parent Café, "Beyond Words: Strengthening Families Through Stories," where we’ll explore the importance of reading with your children and the impact of culturally diverse stories. We’re excited to welcome Jennifer Butler Brown from Barefoot Books, who will showcase a selection of diverse books for families. Each family can take home 2 books, and coffee and breakfast pastries will be provided.
We will meet in the library from 8-10 am. Don’t miss out on this chance to connect with other parents and enhance your family’s reading experience!
Quarter 1 Report Cards ✅
Starting this school year, families who have completed their child's Yearly Verification on ParentVUE will have access to their child's report card on the ParentVUE app. Here are instructions on how to view report cards via ParentVUe.
Kelly report cards for 1st quarter will be visible on ParentVUE on Monday, November 8th.
If you wish to opt-out of the paperless option for report cards on ParentVUE, please follow these steps no later than November 5th so that our office staff have enough time to process your individual request for a printed report card.
Parent-Teacher Conferences
Conferences are scheduled for the week of fall break on November 25-26. Conferences can be virtual or in person. Our goal is that all families sign up for a parent-teacher conference. If you have not already scheduled a conference, please contact your child’s classroom teacher.
How to schedule a parent-teacher conference:
E-mail the teacher
Remind App (send a message to the teacher)
Call the school (503-916-6350)
Connect with the teacher after school
SUN Update
Congratulations to our Get On the Bus Soccer team on finishing up the fall season! We had so much fun watching the students grow as a soccer team. Hopefully, we will be able to continue to host a Kelly soccer team this spring and again next fall. Big thanks to our parent Coach Maria Cruz for all her support and dedication to the team!
Vision and Hearing Screening
Our screening date is 11/8/2024. If you would not like your child to participate, please let their classroom teacher know.
Dental Sealant
We are still finalizing the schedule for annual dental sealant visit for our 2nd and 3rd graders. As of right now we are planning on having the dental sealant team come to Kelly starting on Nov 5 and stay throughout the week. You should have already received paperwork from your child’s teacher but if you need another copy please stop by the front office.
Message from the Health Office
Families, It’s a great time to get caught up on immunizations. The school exclusion date approaches fast each year. This year if your child isn’t caught up by February 19th they will be excluded from school until they are caught up.
How can you get free Immunizations? Student Health Centers- such as Franklin, McDaniel and Cleveland and more- offer free health clinic services, including Immunizations. Just call them to make an appointment, or check in with your SHA- Jana, and she can help you make an appointment. Multnomah County also offers free immunization clinics- please see the attached flyers.
Here are a few places to obtain more information about immunizations and exemptions.

English Language Arts Curriculum and Resources
Our adopted English language arts curriculum is Wit and Wisdom. It focuses on integrating content learning with reading and writing. Below you’ll find the topics each grade level has been studying, essential questions, and family tip sheets in multiple languages to provide an overview of what is happening at your child’s grade level. The family tip sheet also includes a list of texts you can read at home to support your child with deepening the learning that is happening at school. Not all Russian immersion classrooms use Wit and Wisdom because of the allocation of minutes dedicated to teaching English. At this time, Wit and Wisdom is used in grades 4 and 5.

Lost and Found - Come Check it Out
Recognize any of these clothing items? If you have noticed that something is missing, it might be in our Lost and Found. Check in at the office and let us know that you are hoping to take a look at the Lost and Found and we will help get you set up.
The school will donate lost items to Goodwill 2x per year (once in December and once in June).
Prepare for Fall Weather
The weather has been pretty nice so far this Fall, but we know that rain is right around the corner. We will only let students play outside when it is safe and they have a choice to be under the covered shelter AND we want to give students that opportunity to play outside - even if it's raining.
Please send your student to school prepared with a rain jacket and / or umbrella. If you need assistance getting your child winter clothing, please reach out to our Counselor, Ms. Kangas at mkangas@pps.net.
Kelly Spirit Wear sales are back! Check out our online store to purchase Kelly sweatshirts, tees, and bags. Two logo choices are available in a variety of shirt styles. https://www.bonfire.com/kelly-elementary-shirt-sales/

If your family needs assistance with food, housing, utility bills, physical and mental health, childcare, or connection, belonging and language support, reach out to Antares Argueta at arguetaa@latinet.org and see the flyer below for other ways to connect.
