AP TESTING May 6-17
AP Testing begins tomorrow, Monday, May 6th. Exams run from May 6th-17th. Make-up exams are from May 22nd-24th.
A.M Exams: Students must report no later than
7:45am-8:00 am.
P.M Exams: Students must report no later than
11:45am-12:00 pm.
Students will receive specific testing reminders the day before each registered testing session with report times and reminders.
AP Testing Attendance: During AP testing, students will be pre-excused from classes directly impacted by their testing time. Students sitting in afternoon exams will be released from 2nd period classes early (11:00am) in order to eat lunch prior to testing. If a student does not participate in their planned exam, they are expected to report to class and the pre-excusal will be removed.
- Students with accommodations will receive separate emails with specific directions pertaining to their testing administration.
Important Information for Students/What to Bring on Test Day:
- All students are required to agree to the College Board’s Terms and Conditions in order to participate in testing.
- Please bring No. 2 pencils and blue or black ink pens. Do not bring mechanical pencils. Blue ink pens should have dark blue ink.
- Cell phones and smart watches are NOT PERMITTED in the testing room, even if they are powered off and in bags. Any phones or smart watches brought to the testing room will have to be surrendered during testing and removed from the room. CHS cannot be held liable for your devices, so please just do not bring them.
- CHS will provide Chromebooks for testing, as needed. Laptops must be fully charged, but will be left in backpacks unless needed and being used for recording parts of an exam.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month
For mental health awareness month we will have a large labyrinth drawn on the grass on the quad. Please encourage students to check out the labyrinth, it may be a good way for students to take a short break. Hope to see you out on the lawn!
Directions for walking the labyrinth:
Take deep breaths to begin to relax and focus on the entrance to the labyrinth (you may take your shoes off if you like)
Walk at your own pace silently while taking deep breaths
You may pass others or be passed
Before you begin, you may choose to focus on a question or challenge
As you reach the middle allow yourself to be centered and to receive insights and inspirations. You may stop here for a while and sit.
On your way back focus on what you learned and hold onto the sense of relaxation and calming breath
College Spring Workshops: CHS counselors are hosting college workshops all spring to get 10th and 11th graders prepared for the college application process. Come to the lunch workshops on Wednesdays in room 202. There will be FREE pizza for those who attend.
NEW CalKids - Free Money for College
CalKIDS is a program from the State of California that funds up to $1,500 in free money for eligible low-income public school students to save for college and career training. Funds can be used for higher education expenses, such as tuition and related fees, books and required supplies, and computer equipment.

Sheriff’s Student Athlete Career Expo - Saturday May 11th 10am-2pm
This event will have our entire Recruiting/Personnel Division in attendance for your senior Student Athletes to be able to learn about the different job opportunities with the Sheriff's Department for both Sworn and Professional Staff. Parents are welcome! See THIS flier for additional information.

Summer Camp Volunteer Opportunities at the Natural History Museum
The NAT is currently seeking enthusiastic high school students who are passionate about science, nature, and education to volunteer as camp assistants. This role offers a unique opportunity for students to develop leadership skills, work closely with museum educators, and inspire younger learners. FBI San Diego is now accepting applications for their 2024 Teen Academy, a free full-day program for rising high school juniors and seniors to get a comprehensive look into today’s FBI.

The 2024 Coronado High School Prom
The 2024 Coronado High School Prom will be held May 25th from 7-10 pm at the Birch Aquarium. All Juniors and Seniors are invited to attend. Prom Tickets go on sale this week starting Wednesday. Tickets will be on sale from May 1- 17th and can be purchased in the student store.
Ticket Sale Times are all during lunch at the Student Store
- May 6 - 10 $95 with ASB Card, $105 Without
- May 13-17 $105 with ASB Card, $115 Without
After School Sales will be held May 15, 16 and 17 for 30 minutes after 4th period.

ASB, Library, Yearbook Updates
ASB: The Class of 2026 is hosting a discount card fundraiser. These cards will give you discounts to numerous local businesses around Coronado as well as many businesses nationwide. Cards are available now through May 12th. Scan the QR code or visit the website to make your $20 purchase online and your card can be picked up from the CHS front office between 8am and 4pm M-F. May is Mental Health Awareness Month!
To celebrate, visit the CHS Library’s De-Stress Station, which will feature coloring sheets, fun books, and other activities to relax and de-stress. In collaboration with Safe Harbor Coronado, resources and information on mental health awareness will be available to students in the library all month long!

CHS JROTC Team Secures Place in National Academic Bowl Championship in Washington, DC
Following two online rounds of rigorous competition against teams from all over the world, Coronado High School JROTC Academic Team, comprised of Daniel Adams, Claire Hickey, Dylan Nasori, Paige Koczan, Dale Gregory, and Emma Terry has secured a coveted spot in the Championship event to be held in Washington, DC. The 2024 U.S. Navy JROTC Academic Bowl Championship is scheduled to take place at The Catholic University of America campus from June 21-25, 2024. This prestigious event is sponsored by the U.S. Navy JROTC and organized by College Options Foundation.

Coronado High School’s yearbook program for achieving Jostens National Yearbook Program of Excellence 2024 award at the Bronze Level. The National Yearbook Program of Excellence recognizes engaging yearbooks that reflect a broad representation of the student body while helping students to develop 21st century skills in journalism such as communication, collaboration, and information and communication technologies (ICT) literacy.

Being on time to school is a priority!
Tardy Policy: Please remind your students of the importance of being on time for class. Every 5th and 10th tardy will result in a one hour detention. 15 or more tardies will result in a two hour detention Parents, please talk with your students about the importance of being on time to class. Students who are tardy miss critical instructional time and disrupt the flow of learning. We appreciate your timely support with this.
Attendance and Absences: it is imperative that you contact Attendance Technician, Doris Ricks, at (619) 522-8907 (2094). Unverified absences will be considered truant after 24 hours.
- Tardies: Thank you for continuing to remind your student about the importance of getting to class on time.
- Email Notification: Students will receive detention notification to their CUSD email accounts. Student should check their email weekly for all notifications.
Early Release: If your student needs to leave school early, it's imperative you contact the attendance clerk as early as possible. This will help with releasing your student on time.
Independent Study Contracts: Students who have a planned absence of five or more consecutive days may complete an Independent Study Contract. Parents must complete the “Request for Independent Study” form (available in the front office) at least one week/5 school days prior to the absence date.
If Your Student Becomes Ill During the School Day: Students who feel ill MUST report to the nurse’s office. The nurse’s office will call the parent, and only then will the student be released to go home. If a student leaves school without checking out of the health office first, the absence will remain unexcused. The health and safety of every student is our top priority.
E-Bikes: We have had an increase in calls about e-bikes being ridden at high speeds through the pedestrian walkway between Village Elementary and CHS Niedermeyer Field. Please remind your students to follow traffic rules and adhere to the city signage stating that no bikes are to ridden in that walkway. There have been some close calls with small children and pedestrians. Thank you
Campus Pride: Please help us remind students about the importance of taking pride in our school by picking up their trash, refraining from vandalizing school grounds and restrooms, and helping to keep our beautiful campus clean!
Freshman Lunch: All Freshmen are REQUIRED to remain on campus during lunch. Freshmen who leave campus will receive detention and parents/guardians will be contacted.
Campus Safety: Guests are required to always check in at the front office. ALL visitors must present their identification when visiting campus.
Detention: Detention will be held weekly on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:40 - 4:40pm
Student IDs: Please remind your student to always have their student ID.
Bike Safety: Bikes and E-Bikes: Please remind your student to wear their helmet and follow all traffic laws and "Walk Your Wheels" zones while riding their bikes to school. Our top priority is to keep our students and community safe at all times.

Devices:
- As part of this program, all Coronado High School students are required to bring a fully charged device to school daily. Students who need a device will have the opportunity to check-out a Chromebook during schedule pick-up.
Students Using Personal Devices
CHS students who have personal devices at home may use their own device as an alternative to a CUSD Chromebook. If your student chooses to use a personal device, however, please note that it will not have specific CUSD features, such as testing lockdown browsers and content filters. If your student chooses to use their own device for daily school work, they may still be issued a CUSD Chromebook for state testing in Spring 2024 to meet secure browser requirements.
Students Using CUSD Devices
CHS families who choose to check-out a CUSD Chromebook for their student’s daily school work may keep the device for the duration of their student’s enrollment at CHS, including summers. Students will practice responsibility for operating and maintaining their individual CUSD devices throughout their time at CHS. We also encourage families to purchase the OPTIONAL Mobile Device Protection Plan for CUSD Chromebooks for just $20 a year to limit any fines due to accidental damage. The Protection Plan must be purchased annually within two weeks of the beginning of the school year in order to be valid. A new Protection Plan must also be purchased if a student is provided with a replacement device due to damage/loss of their previous device.
