Be Present
We returned from winter break, observed MLK Day, followed by snow days. It is very easy to be distracted. Each decision you make impacts your day-to-day and long term goals from what you eat, sleep, attitude, attendance and choosing to be present.
Attendance is more than getting to school. It is getting to school, in your classroom - on time, prepared, ready to participate. To be present you must be in the moment, focused on the now, aware of your immediate surroundings and actively engage. Employers are seeking qualified workers that show up on time motivated to work.
If you can't get to school on time, how will you get to work on time?
Many employers are requesting high school attendance records before interviewing.
Choose to be present now for your future career!

Technical College or University - FAFSA Required
Avoidable FAFSA Mistakes
If you are planning to attend one of South Carolina's 115 postsecondary institutions, including technical schools, universities or community colleges after high school graduation, then you are required to complete the Federal Application for Federal Student Aid, also known as the FAFSA.*
"Many higher institutions use FAFSA to determine students' eligibility for nonfederal need-based aid - additional funds students can use to pay for school. The application is open until June 30. It is recommended to apply early. Making a mistake on the FAFSA or submitting the application late can result in processing delays or limit the amount of loans, grants and other aid awarded to a student. The following are eight common missteps to avoid:
- Not Registering for an FSA ID Before Filling Out the FAFSA Students, parents, guardians, spouse or any contributor - each need to create an FSA ID in order to complete and sign the FAFSA. This can take up to three days while information is confirmed. Parents or spouses without a Social Security number can create an FSA ID under certain conditions, and there are additional identity verification steps. Secure your FSA ID once it is approved.
- Missing Deadlines Complete the application now. Do not wait until you make a decision. There is no obligation to attend any postsecondary school. The deadline for the for 2025-2026 is June 30, 2025.
- Not Listing Schools Where You Plan to Apply You can list up to 20 schools on the FAFSA. If you don't include a school where you are planning to apply, that college or university won't receive your information. To change the list on your FAFSA, you will need to log in to your account and select 'Add or Remove Schools'.
- Not Consenting to the IRS Direct Data Exchange The free Federal Application for Federal Student Aid requires tax information from the prior year. This means families will need tax information from 2023 when completing the FAFSA for the 2025-2026 academic year. You will need to consent to FUTURE Act-Direct Data Exchange, which automatically transfers federal income tax information to the online FAFSA from Internal Revenue Service.
- Submitting Incorrect Personal Information All contributors' names on the application must match government documents, such as birth certificate or Social Security card. Take your time to ensure information is entered correctly; correct spelling, sequence of numbers, etc.
- Not Renewing the FAFSA Each Year The application must be completed and submitted annually to be considered each school year for federal work-study and funds such as grants, federal student loans and the Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant. South Carolina and most schools use the form to determine their own aid.
- Listing Parental Marriage Status Incorrectly If you are submitting the application as a dependent student, the Education Department wants to know the marital status of your legal parents as of the day the FAFSA is completed. If your parents are divorced, never-married or separated, then the parent who provided the most financial support over the last 12 months is considered the contributor. If it's the same amount for each parent, the contributor is the parent with the highest income and assets.
- Forgetting to Sign Your Application The form is considered incomplete and won't be processed until it is signed by you, the student, and all contributors. You will need your FSA ID to sign electronically. All contributors can find a link to obtain a FSA ID through StudentAid.gov. The online FAFSA is processed by the Education Department within one to three days."
