Message from Principal, Dr. Roche:
Dear Bulldog Families and Caregivers,
As we reach the five-week mark of our semester, we want to remind you of the valuable resources available to help your student succeed and emphasize some key priorities for the remainder of the term.
Monitoring Progress with Skyward
Skyward is your window into your student's academic journey. This online portal provides real-time access to:
- Current grades and assignments
- Attendance records
If you haven't yet activated your Skyward account, please contact our front office for assistance. Regular check-ins on Skyward can help you support your student's progress and address any concerns before they become obstacles to success.
The Critical Importance of Attendance
Research consistently shows that attendance is one of the strongest predictors of academic achievement. Every school day matters and even small absences add up quickly:
- Missing just two days a month results in being chronically absent
- Students who miss less than 5% of school days are significantly more likely to pass state tests
- On-time arrival ensures students don't miss critical instruction at the beginning of class
We ask for your partnership in ensuring your student attends school on time, every day, for every period. If your family is facing challenges affecting attendance, please contact our counseling team so we can provide support.
Together, we can make this semester a success for every student!
Assessments
State mandated testing (Smarter Balanced Assessment and Washington Comprehensive Assessment of Science) will be given this month and next. The SBA (English) will be given to all 10th graders on March 17 and 18, and the WCAS will be given to all 11th graders on March 18. Then the Math portion of the SBA will be given to all 10th graders on April 17 and 18.
Here are some things to help your student be successful:
1. Bring a fully charged chrome book to school.
2. Get a good night’s sleep.
3. Eat a light breakfast.
4. Don’t give up! Some questions will be hard, some will be easy.
5. Do your best!
It is possible that 11th graders still need to pass the SBA. Arrangements will be made to provide this opportunity on the dates listed above. Please have your student check their school email for details and check with their counselor to see if they need to take one or both tests.

MVHS Teacher Preparation Program for High School Students
If you are interested in pursuing a career in the field of education, Careers in Education is the place for you! This is more than a class - it is a supportive program within a class that helps students learn why to pursue a career in education and how to do it! This is a "grow your own" teacher preparation program offered to grades 10-12 who are interested in a career in the field of education. Students will have the chance to be placed in an internship with elementary or middle school teachers and will work cooperatively in their mentor teachers' classrooms during our class time to assist younger students with their education. Students will also have the chance to take the Paraprofessional Exam, which combined with being 18 years of age and graduating high school will make them hireable as a Paraeducator in Washington State Schools. Hands-on college advising and support is provided throughout the pathway, with additional guidance from our Maestros Para el Pueblo advisors from Skagit Valley College and Western Washington University. Sign up for Careers in Education during registration. See or email Mr. Hand for more information. rhand@mvsd320.org

MVHS Closed Campus Policy
What Does the Closed Campus Policy Mean?
In line with Mount Vernon School District Board Policy 3242, students are required to remain on campus from the time they arrive until the end of the school day, including during lunch. As a reminder, this policy has always been in effect and is supported by RCW 28A.225.010, which mandates student attendance throughout the school day.
Exceptions:
- If a student needs to leave campus for a valid reason, such as a medical appointment, a parent or guardian must notify the school office in advance.
- Only those students with prior administrative or parental permission will be excused from the campus during school hours.
Consequences for Violations:
- Students who leave campus without permission will receive a Saturday School.
- Repeated violations will result in escalating disciplinary actions, including suspension.
How You Can Help:
- Reinforce the policy at home: Please discuss with your child the importance of staying on campus during the school day and the potential consequences of leaving without permission.
- Plan ahead: If your child has an appointment or another reason to leave campus, notify the school office ahead of time to avoid any confusion or disciplinary issues.
This policy is crucial in creating a safe, structured environment where students can focus on their education. Your support in communicating and upholding this policy is key to its success.
Thank you for partnering with us to ensure a safe and positive school environment for all students.
