GMS Weekly News and Notes
Winter Break Edition
Weekly Updates
I am so grateful to our wonderful students for making the last day before vacation bright and happy. We all started the day with a concert put on by our orchestra. Students, staff, and visitors got to enjoy some traditional winter holiday favorites as they started the day.
During the day, the crew over at Cafe 106 served up all kinds of tasty treats to staff and families. Cafe 106 remains the best breakfast place in town!
On behalf of our entire GMS staff, I wish all of our students and families a very happy winter break. May it be a time of joy and togetherness and some extra sleep!
Campus Highlight: Elves at Work
Ms. Johansen's 6th graders competed to build the tallest tower on Friday. At last check, none of the towers included a throne of lies.
Merry Christmas!
To everyone in our community celebrating, we wish you a very Merry Christmas. May the joy of the season extend far into the new year!
Happy Hannukah!
To all in our community who celebrate Hannukah, we wish you a joyful festival of lights!
Winter Clubs are Coming!
Sign-up for winter clubs will be open on Friday, January 3rd at 2:30PM.
The Winter Club season will officially begin on Monday, January 13th. We look forward to another great club season in our building!
Marathon Monday Update
As 2024 comes to a close, we are proud to share that our students have read nearly 5,000 books so far this school year! Grizzlies (grade 7) have taken back the lead, barely squeaking by Meteorites (grade 6). The Green team (grade 8) rounds out the top three. It’s a close reading race, but the year is still young. Stay tuned for next month’s update!

GMS Fact of the Week
This week's fact comes to us from the Social Studies department:
The evergreen fir tree has traditionally been used to celebrate winter festivals for thousands of years. Pagans used branches to decorate their homes during the winter solstice, as it made them think of the spring to come. Romans used fir trees to decorate their homes for the New Year. Bulldog Nurses' Blip
This week during professional development, the GMS Nurses took a more in depth look at sleep disorders with Northeastern School Health Academy. It’s pretty incredible how far kids are from getting adequate sleep. Children in middle and high school should get 8-10 hours of sleep every night. If they do not get adequate sleep, they can present symptoms differently than adults. This can include hyperactivity, agitation, and difficulty concentrating.
Winter break is a time to remember that routine is key for successful re-entry back into school in January. Try to keep the same sleep patterns and screen time limitations during the time at home.
Sleep Tidbits
Children that get adequate sleep are less likely to develop depression
Sleep is a critical time for physical growth and can be impaired if the child is chronically sleep deprived
Earlier bedtimes promote longer durations of sleep (duh- but it helps people stay asleep longer!)
Supportive environments help maintain better quality sleep. For example, quiet, dark bedrooms without electronics or distractions.
Nothing screams routine and healthy habits like the holiday times and vacation- we got this!
