A Message from our Multilingual Specialist
Last week, our DLI teachers and instructional assistants spent time together learning about our new Spanish prevention/intervention programs El camino al éxito y El próximo paso al éxito. Both programs offer systematic and explicit phonics instruction for students learning to read in Spanish. Students acquire phonological awareness and phonics skills so that they can read and decode words with increased automaticity and read decodable text with fluency. These phonics programs lay the necessary foundation so that when students can automatically recognize words, they can devote more attention to increasingly complex language comprehension skills. They become skilled readers when they can fluently coordinate both word recognition and comprehension.
Students receiving English Language Development support have a new tool that can be used at home: Lexia Core 5 Reading. Lexia Core 5 provides a structured and systemic approach to six critical areas of reading:
Phonological Awareness - recognizing sounds in words
Phonics - understanding the connection between sounds and letters
Structural Analysis - recognizing meaningful parts in words
Fluency - reading smoothly and with expression
Vocabulary - understanding word meanings and relationships
Comprehension - understanding spoken and written language
Please review your child's take-home folder for their login information. Here is the family resource page if you want to learn more about Lexia Core. If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Lira at mlirawiser@sherwood.k12.or.us

Annual Notice for Statewide Tests
Oregon is committed to preparing every learner with academic knowledge and skills necessary for success beyond high school. Oregon’s statewide assessments in English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics are fully aligned to Oregon’s State Standards and provide students in grades 3-8 and 11, along with their families, one measure of academic achievement and growth.
Oregon law (ORS 329.479) permits parents and adult students to annually opt-out of Oregon’s statewide assessments in English Language Arts (ELA) and/or Mathematics by submitting an annual form. The opt out form will be provided at least 30 days prior to the start of testing. Testing will be in the spring. Specific testing windows will be shared at a later date.
