St Thomas’ Primary School is part of a faith community centred on the life of Jesus, as expressed in our Motto,
‘Together in Christ’
Our Vision is to 'Educate the Whole Child' and empower learners as global citizens, to be curious, collaborative, creative and critical thinkers, inspired by Christ.
Prayer for our Confirmation Candidates
Dear God,
You send out Your Spirit to touch all people's hearts,
so they may believe in You and in Jesus whom You sent.
Look kindly on all candidates
for Confirmation as they listen to Your voice.
Open their hearts to Your Spirit
and bring to fulfilment the good work that You have begun in them.
Teach them to appreciate what is holy in others
and be patient with what they do not understand.
Deepen their faith in the Gospel and help them to pass it on by their example.
We pray that You will continue to guide them and sustain them.
Through Christ our Lord,
Amen.

St Thomas' Primary School Choir - Catholic Performing Arts Festival
On Thursday, our Choir will once again, be performing in the Catholic Performing Arts Festival. Last week they performed in the Sacred Choral category.
From the Principal
Dear Parents and Caregivers
As we head into the second half of term 3, students continue to showcase their amazing gifts and talents in so many ways. We have celebrated National Science Week and over the next two weeks, students will participate in the Catholic Performing Arts Festival with Dance and Drama performances, and in instrumental categories. Students are busy preparing for the Tournament of the Minds competition at Edith Cowan University in Joondalup, the Athletics Carnival on the Friday 1 September, and we are celebrating our Fathers, Grandfathers and father figures with Father’s Day stalls and our Father’s Day Liturgy on Thursday 31 August.
CONFIRMATION
On Friday evening, our Year Six candidates will receive the Sacrament of Confirmation. Confirmation, a Sacrament of initiation, establishes young adults as full-fledged members of the faith. During confirmation, the focus is on the Holy Spirit, who confirmed the apostles on Pentecost and gave them the courage to practice their faith. I would like to thank Mrs Gibbs, Father Wayne, and Sr Catherine for all their work in preparing our candidates. You are welcome to join us at 6pm in the Church to celebrate this Sacrament.
BOOK WEEK PARADE – Wednesday 30 August
Each year since 1945, the Children’s Book Council Australia has brought children and books together across Australia through CBCA Book Week. The theme for this year is “Read, Grow, Inspire ‘’. We will celebrate books and Australian children’s authors and illustrators through class activities, competitions, and of course, our fabulous book week parade on Wednesday 30 August.
The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare advise reading regularly with children from a young age stimulates patterns of brain development and strengthens parent-child relationships. This, in turn, builds language, literacy, and social-emotional skills. Raising Children, advises it is important to read to babies and young children to help your child get to know sounds, words, and language, and develop early literacy skills. It can help to promote brain development, imagination, and learning.
Parents are most welcome to join us for our dress up parade at 8.45am in the undercover area. Children are asked to bring along the book or a printout of the cover page to help our secret judges choose several award winners.
Students may wear their book week costumes all day or may wish to bring their sports uniform to change into after the parade.
PRINCIPAL FOCUS – Books and Big Kids
The following except taken from 10 Reasons You Should Read Along to Big Kids Too, explains that it’s important to read to, and with our kids, regardless of their age and ability:
Every parent knows that it’s good to read to kids when they’re little. It helps babies, toddlers, and pre-schoolers develop spoken language, recognise letters and words, and get ready for kindergarten. But it’s beneficial to read to kids even after they can read on their own. Research shows that continued reading aloud after age 5 (and well beyond) improves reading and listening skills and academic performance (and is also loads of fun!).
Here are 10 key reasons to keep reading aloud to older kids:
· It builds vocabulary. Kids who are read to encounter more words — and learn how to recognize and pronounce them — than they would by just being spoken to. And studies show that having a large vocabulary can help kids perform better in school.
· It improves comprehension. When kids are engaged and invested in the story, they understand it more thoroughly. You can check in as you go to see whether your kid understands what’s going on and ask what they think will happen next, what they think of the characters, and so on.
· It’s wonderful for bonding. Positive experiences and warm memories of hearing stories from a loved one can inspire a lifelong love of reading.
· It provides positive modelling. Kids learn through observation and modelling. Reading aloud lets them hear what language sounds like. You can also model how to analyse a story as you read and how to figure out the meaning of a word using context clues.
· It improves listening skills. Reading aloud nurtures appreciation of rich language and helps train kids’ ears for understanding instruction in school. According to educator Jim Trelease, author of The Read-Aloud Handbook, “A child’s reading level doesn’t catch up to his listening level until eighth grade.”
· It’s a way to discover the classics. Kids may be put off by the challenging language of Shakespeare or the old-fashioned settings of Jane Austen in school, but in a cosy setting at home, you can help the text come alive as you take on different characters’ voices and fill in historical context.
· It helps with discussing difficult issues. Kids may tune out if you lecture them about what to do and what not to do. But if you read a story that shows characters grappling with serious conflicts and the consequences of their actions — or facing bullying, racism, religious or ethnic bias, or gender discrimination — it’s a way into talking about complex, topical matters.
· It’s a way to Introduce different genres. Reading aloud lets parents introduce kids to different types of books and stories, helping kids learn which kinds they’d like to choose for themselves. Reading a variety of material boosts all kinds of learning. Try poetry, satire, manga, and autobiographies.
· It’s a portal into your kids’ interests. Reading books on subjects or in genres kids love (sci-fi, fantasy, mysteries, thrillers, graphic novels, Norse mythology, Minecraft, whatever!) gives you something to share and discuss, while also putting you on a level playing field — rather than you always being the teacher who knows more than they do.
· It sparks curiosity and a thirst for learning. Nonfiction books make great read-aloud, too. For older kids and teens, try books or articles by journalists covering current or recent events and world issues. And there are lots of popular histories that are so engaging they read like nail-biting fiction.
CELEBRATING FATHER’S DAY
Students will have the opportunity to purchase a gift for Father's Day from our Father's Day Stalls on Tuesday 29 August and Wednesday 30 August from 8am – 8.25am, in the undercover area. Information on these stalls can be seen in the flyer below.
Next Thursday 31 August, all dads and father figures are welcome to join us at school from 7.30- 8.45am for coffee and croissants, followed by a liturgy at 9am in the Church, to celebrate Father's Day. A big thank you to the P & F for organising this event and to the Pre-primary students for leading us in prayer.
We wish all our father’s, Grandfathers and father figures, a wonderful Father’s Day on the 3 September.
May God bless your week.

STAFF PROFESSIONAL LEARNING DAY
On Friday 18 August, staff participated in a professional learning day titled “Strengths based Wellbeing”. Staff worked on developing awareness of the VIA Strengths and how we can draw out the strengths of students, particularly in line with our Highway Heroes social-emotional learning program. The CEWA Strategic Wellbeing Framework was also discussed during the day. In line with our Strategic Plan 2022-2026 (Outcome 3.2), staff and student wellbeing is prioritised and becoming more embedded at St Thomas’.
INTERIM REPORTS
On Monday 18 September, Kindergarten to Year Six students will have interim reports available. The interim reports for Term Three use the same format as Term One’s interim reports, and provide a ‘point-in-time’ marker at the halfway point of Semester Two. Teachers make a professional judgement on whether a student is at, above or below the expected progression toward the end of year achievement in Religion, English and Mathematics learning areas. Social and personal indicators are also reported.
Whilst at the end of Term One, teachers and parents met to discuss student progress and their start to the academic year, for Term Three, teachers will note on the report whether they feel a parent-teacher meeting is necessary. If teachers request a meeting, they will contact parents to arrange a suitable time. If teachers feel a meeting is not required, this indicates students are progressing as expected, and no meeting will be scheduled. If you have any queries regarding this process, please speak with myself or your child’s teacher.

On Friday, 25 August, some of our Year 6 students will receive the Sacrament of Confirmation.
So what is Confirmation? Confirmation is a Catholic Sacrament of mature Christian commitment and a deepening of baptismal gifts. It is one of the three Sacraments of Initiation for Catholics. It is most often associated with the gifts of the Holy Spirit. It is called Confirmation because it confirms and strengthens baptismal grace. The Sacrament gives a special strength to witness to the Christian faith.

Mini Vinnies’ Heartwarming Initiative for St Vincent de Paul
The St Thomas’ Mini Vinnies have orchestrated a heartwarming initiative that is bringing the whole school together. With their commitment to kindness and community, these young leaders have organised a school-wide collection of new and unopened personal care items, in the hope to make a big impact on those in our wider community who are in need.
Each year level has been assigned a specific personal care item to contribute, please see the attached poster. To facilitate this effort, a dedicated basket will be placed in each classroom. As we come together to support their cause, we’re excited to see just how much of an impact we can make as a united school community. Toiletry bags are also being collected, these can be used, but must be in good condition.
All of the donations will be collected on Week 9 Monday 11th September.
Thank you for your support.

Drama @ St Thomas'
As we reflect on the remarkable year that has unfolded thus far, our Drama department shines as a vibrant hub of creativity and growth. From the Kindy students through to the confident Year 6 students, our Drama journey has been nothing short of exhilarating in 2023.
In Kindergarten, the joy of learning intertwines seamlessly with the magic of drama. Engaging in an array of drama games, our young learners create characters and simple ideas to express themselves using both movement and voice. The allure of dress-ups and puppetry have added an extra layer of excitement.
Venturing into Pre-primary, the curtain rises on a world of exploration and creativity. Our students, with an impressive command of their bodies and voices, have brought simple plays to life with unwavering enthusiasm. Armed with newfound skills, they confidently face the audience and improvise using the themes of superheroes and bullying through imaginative drama activities, fostering both empathy and understanding.
In Year 1, our budding actors have turned the spotlight on stagecraft, honing their skills and embracing the art of storytelling. With a foundation in place, they're now taking their first steps into the realm of simple scripts.
Year 2 has taken centre stage in the enchanting world of musical theatre, where the timeless tale of "Annie" comes to life through their boundless enthusiasm.
A wave of intrigue washed over Year 3 as they embraced the mystery box challenge. With a taste for the unexpected, they've ventured into the fascinating terrain of character creation, using stereotypes as a dynamic tool.
Our Year 4 students delved into the art of puppetry, crafting intricate and thoughtful puppets and they now channel their energies into performing dramatic monologues – a challenge that they are meeting with enthusiasm!
Year 5 students recreated a cinematic scene for the theatrical stage. Yet, their artistic journey doesn't end there; they're currently penning their own plays based on their vision of the future.
Year 6, our seasoned dramatists, stand poised to conquer the grand stage of the Performing Arts festival in week 7. With unwavering dedication, they're fine-tuning their class play after dabbling with Shakespeare and “Poor Theatre”.
The Drama Club cast a spell of intrigue and laughter upon audiences with their production, "The Mystery of the Missing Medallion." While the spotlight shone on the actors, a symphony of behind-the-scenes heroes emerged – students who as stage and props managers, crew members, lighting and sound technicians, and even a film crew, orchestrated a flawless production.
The year 2023 heralded the arrival of Dance Club, a sensational addition to our artistic repertoire. Open to Years 2 and 3, this club has 23 sensational dancers that will grace the floors of the prestigious Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre. Alongside a multitude of
other talented Catholic School Students, our dancers are poised to leave an indelible mark on this grand event. Their dedication, hard work, and sheer passion are a testament to the spirit of St. Thomas', and we are confident they will represent our school with the utmost flair.
As we celebrate these remarkable achievements and anticipate the dazzling performances that lie ahead, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to the students, parents, and teachers who continue to fuel the fires of creativity within our Drama department. With every step forward, our young artists create a tapestry of imagination, emotion, and expression that enriches our school community and beyond.

Sustainability in the Early Years.
The Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) 2.0 features Sustainability as one of the 8 principles to underpin practice and is broadly defined to span the environmental, social, and economic dimensions which are intertwined.
Sustainability is a concept that has gained immense importance in recent years as the world grapples with environmental challenges and seeks to create a more harmonious relationship with the planet.
Early childhood education lays the foundation for lifelong learning and attitudes. By introducing sustainability concepts at a young age, children can develop a deep appreciation for the natural world and a sense of responsibility towards preserving it. Pre-kindergarten classrooms offer a nurturing environment for instilling these values.
Sustainability practices help children understand their role in protecting the environment, fostering a sense of stewardship and empathy for nature.
Sustainability practices help children understand their role in protecting the environment, fostering a sense of stewardship and empathy for nature.
Exploring sustainability issues encourages critical thinking as children ponder questions about how things are made, where they come from, and where they go after use.
Engaging in sustainable practices often involves finding creative solutions to everyday challenges, promoting problem-solving skills.
Learning about sustainability addresses cognitive, emotional, and social development, fostering well-rounded growth.
Children develop a sense of agency when they realize their actions can make a positive difference in the world.
Outdoor play is a fundamental aspect of early childhood education. It not only supports physical development but also provides opportunities for sensory exploration, creativity, and social interaction. Integrating sustainability into outdoor play enhances these benefits by connecting children with nature and their surroundings.
Outdoor spaces allow children to explore and interact with nature, observing plants, insects, and animals in their natural habitats.
Gardening where children can plant, care for, and harvest fruits, vegetables, or flowers, teaching them about the lifecycle of plants and the importance of nurturing.
Encourage children to create art using natural materials like leaves, sticks, and rocks, fostering creativity and an appreciation for the beauty of the environment.
Engage children in age-appropriate activities such as water conservation experiments, reusing materials for crafts, and exploring energy sources.
Choose children's books that emphasize environmental themes, sparking conversations about conservation and sustainability.
Parents play a vital role as role models, showcasing sustainable behaviours and explaining their significance.
Incorporating sustainability practices, especially within the context of outdoor play, in pre-kindergarten settings or in the home have far-reaching benefits. By nurturing a sense of wonder and respect for the environment from an early age, we equip children with the tools they need to become responsible and conscientious stewards of the planet. Integrating sustainability into children’s lives isn't just about teaching concepts;
