Character Monthly Focus: Empathy
- For the month of April at Coolidge Elementary, we're celebrating empathy ! Empathy is the ability to imagine what it is like to be in someone else's shoes.
Principal Points
Dear Coolidge Families:
Here we are at the door of our Spring Break! March has truly flown by. Our students have had more opportunities to enjoy being outside at recess with the comfort of the sunshine and warmer temperatures.
As we close out March is Reading Month, our teachers continue to be grateful for our many mystery readers. I had the pleasure of being a reader in Mrs. Widner's room. Even on St. Patrick's Day, I couldn't trick the students. Additonally, our students have read and logged over 85,000 minutes of reading.Thank you Coolidge families for your committment to literacy.
Our Book Bingo and Book Swap ended our week with our students going home with a new book. Thank you to our PTA and the following staff for supporting this event : Mrs. Brees, Mrs Dixon, Mrs. Mikonczyk, Mrs. McCluskey and Mrs. Rand.
When we return from Spring Break, our PBIS behavior focus will be on using the classroom and hallway bathrooms responsibly, respectfully and safely. One of our biggest issue with our bathrooms is throwing the used paper towel on the floor instead of the wastebasket.
Our Community with Character trait will be Empathy. Empathy is the ability to understand and share someone else's feelings, and to imagine what it's like to be in their shoes. It is about acknowledging and validating emotions, even if you don't agree with them.
We have exciting news , thanks to Ms. Bauer our Coolidge Facebook page is up and running. We look forward to sharing posts. Find us on Facebook :Coolidge Elementary School- LIvonia!
Lastly, whether you and your family our heading on vacation or staying home, I wish each of you a relaxing and restful Spring Break.
Best,
Mrs. Pierson

Coolidge Drop off and Pick up Procedures
The Loop (Highly Recommended) – The loop can be used for drop off or pick up. Students should remain in their cars until the car has come to a complete stop in the painted half circle area. Please do not let your child out of the car, or wave your child to your car, while you are in any other part of the loop area or driveway. Do not leave the loop area until the vehicle in front of you has left. Please remain alert and ready to move forward with traffic.
The Parking lot - The parking lot can be used for drop off or pick up. Your car should be parked in a parking spot and you will need to walk your child to and from the school doors utilizing only the crosswalk. OUr staff is there to assist you and your child. Your child should NEVER be in the parking lot without you at their side. The ONLY place that parking or sitting is permitted, is in a designated parking space. Parking anywhere else could prevent our buses from coming or going. (Using the loop is easier.)
The Crosswalk - The crosswalk is for our student to walk across the parking lot safely. Cars have been parking blocking the crosswalk. Please use our parking spots. Do not block the crosswalk!
PTA NEWS AND INFORMATION
March is Reading Month
Please remember to turn in any remaining reading logs by Monday 3/31 to have minutes read count towards week 3 prizes, classroom prizes and reading challenge prizes.
*If your student reads more than 240 minutes of animals for the week, please write their TOTAL on the bottom. Our read-a-thon ENDS on Friday 3/21.
Read-A-Thon 3/1 - 3/21
Our Read-A-Thon will begin on 3/1/25. Forms went home with students this past week with information on how to register as well as the weekly reading logs & reading challenge logs. We are encouraging all students to raise at least $10 with the schoolwide goal of $3000 (please refer to the flyer sent home or attached here for more information). Please be sure to turn in your weekly reading logs by the due dates listed at the bottom to be eligible for week 1 & week 2 prizes. ALL reading logs are due no later than 3/31 to be eligible for week 3, classroom (you may turn in week 1 and 2 late to receive credit towards the classroom prize but it will not count towards week 1 & week 2 prizes if late) & reading challenge prizes.
Prizes are only based on minutes read, not on money raised. Our prizes include:
1. Week 1, Week 2 and Week 3 Individual Prizes: the student who returns their reading log and has the most minutes read/week in each classroom will receive a FREE SPIRIT STICK of their choosing from our spirit store. In the case of a tie, names will go into a drawing and one student from that class will be chosen. We have ordered some new spirit sticks exclusively for this event and hope that will encourage students to increase their minutes read and turn in their logs.
2. Classroom Prizes: the classroom with the most minutes read in each grade level at the end of the read-a-thon will earn $40 worth of FREE INDOOR RECESS materials! Young fives will be grouped with kindergarten since there is only one class.
3. Reading Challenge Prizes: any student who completes at least 5 reading challenges and returns their reading log will have their name go into a drawing to win a free poster or book.
Art & Culture Fair
During this year's Art Show on Thursday April 24th, 5:30-7:00pm, we will celebrate our 2nd annual Culture Fair in the gymnasium. Coolidge families are invited to create a display to represent and celebrate their culture (or a culture that is of interest to them) by sharing information, photos, food, clothing, objects, or traditions. Be sure to bring an ingredient list for any food items to respect children or family members with allergies. This is a great opportunity to connect with elder family members, learn about cultural significance, and broaden horizons for the whole school community. The Culture Fair is organized in partnership with Mrs. Stark by the Coolidge PTA Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging Committee.
If you are interested in participating by creating a cultural display, please complete the form below and return it by April 18th, 2025. If financial assistance is needed to participate, reimbursement for supplies up to $25 per family is available (save your receipts).
