October 25th: Weekly Update
Garnet Valley Middle School Community,
We would like to thank all of our students and faculty who participated in this week's Red Ribbon Week themed days! A special thank you to our Heath and PE department and Student Council for making this a great success.
Next week the final week of Quarter One. Please take some time to review Schoology and Alma as there is still time left to make a positive impact on grades. In this newsletter we also include information regarding our upcoming conferences. If you are interested in signing up for a conference, the window officially opens on November 8th. Please note that conferences are not mandatory as we encourage communication throughout the school year.
In closing, we hope everyone who is at the GVHS football game and/or attending the homecoming festivities tomorrow has a safe and enjoyable time. Go Jags!

School Information
GVMS Library - Young Adult Books
At GVMS, we are committed to fostering a love of reading by offering a broad selection of books to meet the diverse needs and interests of our middle school students. We also understand that families may have preferences when it comes to the types of literature their children read, particularly regarding Young Adult (YA) books. With this in mind, we’d like to share an option that allows you to guide your child's reading experience while ensuring they continue to explore literature that suits their reading level and maturity.
If you prefer that your child not read Young Adult literature, please submit a YA Book OPT OUT permission form linked here. If you have multiple children, you can add them to the same form.
Our library offers a wide variety of books to cater to all students' needs, recognizing that while parents may feel a certain book may not be suitable for their child, it might be the perfect fit for another. We encourage families to discuss the books their children are reading and explore book ratings and reviews at Titlewave.
If you are comfortable with your child checking out books from the YA section, no action is needed. However, if you'd prefer to opt out, your child's ELA teacher and GVMS librarian will guide them in selecting alternative books.
Thank you for your support in helping us meet the reading needs of all students!
GVMS After School Clubs
The GVMS After School Activity Program offers a multitude of clubs that meet the varied interests of our students. If you have any questions regarding club details, please contact the sponsor at the email listed in this brochure. Thank you for showing an interest in in our clubs and after school activities!

Military Family Data Collection
If your child's parent or guardian is an active duty member of the U.S. Armed Forces during the 2024-2025 school year, please fill out this form, even if you’ve done so in previous years. We are required to report this information annually to the Pennsylvania Department of Education to meet federal data reporting requirements under the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA).
Reminder: Information on Excused & Unexcused Latenesses
We strongly believe that punctual arrival to school each morning is critical to our student’s success.
Five parent notes denoting illness or emergency will be accepted throughout the semester, and the lates will be marked as excused. After 5 excused lates, additional lates will be regarded as unexcused unless a legal doctor's excuse is provided. Oversleeping, car trouble, and missing the bus are not excused reasons for lateness (even if accompanied by a parent note).
Students who accumulate more than four unexcused latenesses per semester will be called to the office and school actions will be taken, which may include detentions and a home and school team meeting to establish an action plan for improvement.
If your student is coming in late or leaving early due to a doctor/ortho visit, please ask the office for a return to school note and send it in with your student to the main office when they return, so their attendance file can be updated.
Reconfiguration of Our Counselor Department
As a reminder, our counselors are now grade-based. Below, you will find the counselor assigned to each class cohort:
6th Grade: Mr. Matt Bradshaw
7th Grade: Mrs. Marisa Mahon
8th Grade: Ms. Wendy Xanthopoulos
School Counselor: Mrs. Christy Francart
Although Mrs. Francart isn't assigned a specific grade, she will focus on delivering targeted, short-term, small-group interventions throughout the school year. This will allow us to expand and improve upon the various MTSS supports we offer our students.
We sincerely appreciate your trust and support as we implement these positive changes. Our commitment to your child’s well-being remains our top priority. We are confident that this reconfiguration will lead to stronger relationships and better support for all.
