NEWS & UPDATES
Attendance Matters
Westside Community Schools is focusing on student attendance district-wide. Prior to 2020, our schools were consistently near 96% average daily attendance. Since 2020, attendance rates drastically dropped. Our goal is to bring that average attendance rate back to 96% ... and we're seeing success! In August 2023 our attendance averages were 96.5% at elementary buildings, 96.2% at WMS, and 95.8% at WHS.
You'll notice at all of our schools this year we are reminding students and families that their regular attendance at school matters.
WE-SIDE UPDATES
We Are Westside… Fully Embracing the WE
Westside Community Schools launched the WE-SIDE Community Council in the summer of 2020. This stands for Welcoming Equity Support Inclusion and Dignity for Everyone. Our goal is to ensure that all of our students and staff feel welcomed and valued at Westside.
Westside Community Schools hosted a number of "WE-SIDE Community Walks" last year, including a South Omaha Walking Tour and visits to the Jewish Federation of Omaha, the Great Plains Black History Museum and Restoring Dignity. In addition, in partnership with the Institute for Holocaust Education and The Anne Frank Center at the University of South Carolina, Westside hosted the Anne Frank Exhibit at both Westside High School and Westside Middle School. And in April, we hosted the first WE-SIDE Multicultural Fair at WHS on Saturday, April 22, 2023.
For our first Community Walk of the 2023-24 school year, we participated in the Tri-Faith Initiative "United We Walk" event on September 10th, joining others from around the Omaha area to celebrate our city's rich diversity. Other currently scheduled WE-SIDE Community Walk events include a visit to the Samuel Bak Museum and Learning Center at UNO on February 1, 2024 and OneWorld Community Health Center (spring date TBD). And the WE-SIDE Multicultural Fair is scheduled for Saturday, May 11, 2024, at WHS.
