EXPLORERS 1ST GRADE IN THE MAKERSPACE
The first graders worked at a variety of stations using a range of creative materials. It was near cleanup time so only a few photos were captured.
TRIUMPH 6TH GRADERS - IMPROVING THEIR SENSE OF RHYTHM AND TIMING
Ms. Maher asked her students to practice a rhythmic timing game with some similarities to hop scotch. Two pairs of students, connected by ropes, jumped and landed with their legs apart or together in time to music. Then, individual students tried to step between the pairs of people without getting caught by the ropes as they came together. This exercise will be used in many of Ms. Maher's classroom groups over the next few weeks.
DISCOVERY 5TH GRADE WORKED ON READING SKILLS
Ms. Murphy's students read aloud in large and small groups about the Catholic Reformation, a time of great religious and social upheaval in the 1500s.
ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Athletes receiving this honor have demonstrated sportsmanship, team commitment, and a positive attitude.

EVENTS, OPPORTUNITIES OR INFORMATION
FREE TREES FOR ST. ALBANS RESIDENTS
St. Albans residents are eligible for trees to plant in their yard through Community Canopy, an Arbor Day Foundation program.
Residents register for up to two free trees at vtcommunityforestry.org/trees. The online sign-up process guides participants to the best locations to plant trees to help cool their homes, reduce energy usage, and save money. Residents can also sign-up by phone by calling the Arbor Day Foundation at 855-234-3801.
The trees must be reserved in advance and will be available for pick-up on Saturday, June 1, 10am-12pm at the St. Albans City School (29 Bellows Street).
The tree giveaway is being coordinated by the St. Albans City School and the Vermont Urban & Community Forestry Program, a partnership between the Vermont Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation and University of Vermont Extension.

WALKING WEDNESDAYS EVERY WEEK IN MAY
In May we hold Walking Wednesdays every week. We do this because the weather is typically pleasant in May. With the arrival of spring and warmer weather, students and staff are generally more willing to walk to school. Bikers are welcome too as long as there is adequate separation between walkers and bikers. It is best if bikers ride independently or with a family member to school. All walkers and bikers on Walking Wednesdays can collect a pencil and sticker before they enter school.
Remember bikers who record 10 rides in or around St. Albans by September 1st can submit a form to the St. Albans Free Library to be eligible for a drawing of some bicycle-related prizes. Rides to school count. Forms are in the School lobby or can printed out from this link.

FOR FAMILIES - IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT CITY SCHOOL'S RESTRUCTURING PLAN
This coming school year we will be moving away from the learning community structure currently in use and into smaller grade bands (mostly two grade band loops).
