Grades 7 and 8: Community Service Opportunity
Bergen County Stigma-Free Sticker Contest!
LEAP Tank: Grade 8
As part of their final year in the LEAP program, 8th grade students were given an opportunity to demonstrate many of the skills they’ve learned throughout their time in LEAP, such as problem solving, creative thinking, and teamwork. These future entrepreneurs identified a need for a product or service, engaged in idea generation, conducted market research, developed a business plan, and wrote and rehearsed persuasive pitches. They concluded this experience by presenting the following original innovations and inventions to a panel of judges and audience members in a Shark Tank-inspired event:
- Babymoon: A Better Babysitting Service (Megan Collins and Sophie Lee)
- Bionic Bed: A Bed for Better Sleep (Peter Ognibene)
- Ribbit: A New Leap into Virtual Learning (Addison Hwang and Grace Zhou)
- Smart Keys: A Better Way to Learn Music (Tim Mahler and Cole Sheridan)
Thank you to Mrs. Del Rosso, Mr. Barrett, Mr. Rosolanko, and Mrs. Straubinger for serving as the judge panel!
Invengeering: Grades 5 and 6
Grade 5 and Grade 6 LEAP students attended the InVengineering Expo, as the culminating event of a semester-long unit about towers and engineering design. Students worked in teams to create a tower that met competition requirements and specifications with a limited supply of balsa wood. These towers were then destructively tested, and design efficiency was calculated based on the tower's weight and the force applied. The 5th grade team came in first place and the 6th grade team came in fifth place.
Great job to our participants:
- 5th grade: Owen Anderson, Lydia Kim, Jamie Kwon, Katelyn Pulickal, and Grady Zimmerman
- 6th grade: David Kim, Justin Lee, Lauren Lombino, Amily Miranda, and Isabelle Tran
Language Arts: Grade 5
HAVE YOU SEEN OUR MONSTERS?
Grade 5 Language Arts classes celebrated the completion of their "Monster in a Bottle Descriptive Writing Unit." In this unit, students learned how to organize and write a descriptive essay using figurative language and specific details. Students developed their essays through the writing process and celebrated by swapping their writing with another section. Classmates attempted to draw a sketch of the monsters using only the details in the writing pieces. Many sketches were not far off from the original and emphasized the importance of detailed description. If you can get your hands on these essays, try drawing one yourself!
READING INTO WINTER
The 5th graders in Ms. Fischer's and Mrs. Park’s classes wanted to share covers of some good books to cozy up with during these cold winter months! The bulletin board at the end of the 5th grade hallway displays some student-created reading recommendations.
STEM: Grade 6
Daniel and Olivia went to the finals, and Daniel was the winner of the tournament. Congratulations!

Grade 7 and 8 Upcoming Assemblies
Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s):
In collaboration with the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office, Charles DeWolf Middle School is pleased to announce that on January 17, 2023, the BCPO will present a "Cyber Safety" assembly to our 8th graders. This Internet Safety presentation for educators, parents, and students from the Bergen County Cyber Crimes Task Force is a dynamic, entertaining, and informative 360-degree discussion about Internet Safety (general), information control, social networking mistakes, sexting, and cyberbullying.
*There will also be a parent assembly from 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM later that evening. Please reach out to Mr. Lauriello (lauriello@nvnet.org) if you plan on attending.
On January 20, 2023, the BCPO will present an assembly called, "The Pathway to Addiction" to our 7th graders. The presentation educates students on the dangers of experimentation with prescription medication, specifically opiates, and how it corresponds directly with the increase in heroin use by young people. In addition, presenters will provide first-hand accounts and examples of heroin-related arrests, overdoses, and deaths throughout Bergen County. Students will leave with a practical, real-world education on the chilling effects heroin can have on their lives and the importance of good decision-making.
*Due to scheduling conflicts, we will not have a parent assembly for this topic, but we are looking for additional parent assemblies later in the year.
If you have any questions, please reach out to Principal Santa (santaj@nvnet.org) or Mr. Lauriello (lauriello@nvnet.org).
