®️May SEL Trait - Problem Solving®️
Good afternoon Riverton families,
Last newsletter I gave a brief overview of the origins of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month celebrated annually in May. As a lifelong learner, I enjoy continuing to educate myself on the history of our world. Here are a few historical figures and events I learned about as I explored https://edsitement.org/teachers-guides/asian-american-and-pacific-islander-heritage-and-history-us :
Kintaro (Sessue) Hayakawa: was a Japanese-born actor who rose to become one of Hollywood’s most prominent and highly paid stars during the silent film era of the 1910s. Hayakawa was frequently cast in roles that portrayed him as either a villain or a forbidden romantic interest, reflecting the racial stereotypes prevalent in early Hollywood. Frustrated with these limited and often negative roles, Hayakawa took the unprecedented step of founding his own film production company, Haworth Pictures Corporation, in 1918. This made him the first person of Asian descent to own a Hollywood studio, through which he produced and starred in numerous films, earning millions and gaining greater creative control over his work.
AAPI Cultural Legacies: The Lunar New Year & Hawaiian Music are just two cultural legacies. The Lunar New Year is not celebrated by all Asian communities and the event can have a floating date based on the lunar calendar. Variations of this event are celebrated in China, Korea, Vietnam, and Tibet. Music has a significant role in Hawaiian culture. One musical genre, slack-key guitar is well known worldwide. These sounds and instruments can be heard worldwide.
Have you heard of Angel Island? Due to our proximity to the East Coast, we often connect immigration to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. However, on the West Coast, Angel Island was where a majority of immigrants crossing the Pacific arrived from 1910-1940. This island created isolation for families, separating men from women and children in the barracks. As a point of comparison from 1892 to 1954 over twelve million immigrants entered the United States through Ellis Island. From 1910 through 1940, one million immigrants entered the United States through Angel Island.
With gratitude,
Mr. Zagorski
