Note from the Principal
Intervention and Extension:
Our teams are meeting weekly to discuss the extension and intervention needs of our students. Through our Professional Learning Teams, we have formed groups that focus on intervening or extending student learning for 30 minutes, four times a week. On the fifth day, students receive a Social Emotional Learning lesson from the Second Step curriculum.
How to Help:
One way to support our teaching staff at Northview is by regularly checking student take-home folders for any work that needs to be completed or celebrated. We also encourage families to read with their children for at least 20 minutes daily. This can include children reading to a sibling, an adult reading to them, or a combination of both. Building access to books is essential for developing their language and literacy skills.
Northview State Report Card:
Our state report card is now available for the public to see. I am excited to report that Northview has Exceeded Expectations with a score of 78 for the 2023-2024 school year. This score is obtained through a weighted system of achievement, growth, target group outcomes, and on-track to graduation. If you would like to see further break down of the scoring please visit: Report Cards Home | Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction. While a test is a snapshot in time, it is an indicator that we are doing the right work here at Northview. I could not be more proud to be the principal of Northview Elementary School.
Below I have listed highlights and areas for continued growth.
Highlights:
- Our overall score is the same or better than 70% of k-5 schools in the state
- 70% of our students are advanced or proficient in the area of ELA
- 81% of our students are advanced or proficient in the area of Math
- Student individual growth has increased by 43% from last school year
Areas for continued growth:
- Increase the explicit teaching of ELA through research of curriculum and professional development for staff
- Continue our WIN (What I Need) time and develop more extension groups for children who are excelling in math or reading

Act 20 Literacy Tips - Phonics
Phonics is understanding the relationship between written letters and the sound(s) that they make. Phonics instruction helps children learn the alphabetic principle (the idea that written letters represent spoken sounds). This allows students to be able to decode (sound out) new words. Here are some ideas to help your child build phonics skills at home.

Veterans Day Assembly at Northview
Northview celebrated Veterans Day together on November 12th at a school wide assembly. Our 4th graders were highlighted with three student speakers. Each of the student speakers have a close Veteran or active service member in their life that was able to join the assembly to hear their child or grandchild speak. The entire 4th grade sang patriotic songs together led by Mrs. Stowers. The student body participated in turn and talks to discuss what they learned about Veteran's Day. The school and students showed respect and care for the holiday.
Exciting News: Our Art Room Just Got a Creative Boost!
We are thrilled to announce a fantastic addition to our elementary art room, a 3D printer donated by Green Industrial! This generous donation will open up a world of creativity and innovation for our young artists, enhancing their learning experiences in ways we can only imagine.
A Game-Changer for Creativity
The 3D printer will allow our students to bring their ideas to life. Imagine the excitement as they design and create unique sculptures, models, and even functional art pieces! This technology fosters creativity and introduces our students to important concepts in design and engineering.
Thank You to Our Donors!
We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to Green Industrial for their generous contribution. Your support empowers our students and enriches their educational journey. It is donations like yours that make a significant difference in our community and inspire our young artists to explore new possibilities.

Winter Weather Reminders- Recess Clothing
As the winter season approaches, I wanted to take a moment to share some important information regarding our school's policies and expectations for outdoor recess during inclement weather.
First and foremost, please ensure your child is dressed appropriately for the cold temperatures. When the weather feels below zero, we will have indoor recess to keep our students safe and comfortable. There is a list of clothing requirements below. Additionally, please provide a separate bag to send any wet clothes home in.
It's also crucial that you label all pieces of your child's winter clothing. Our lost and found tends to grow quite a bit during the winter months, and labeled items make it much easier to return them to their rightful owners.
Finally, here is a quick reference for the ideal clothing for outdoor recess based on temperature:
- 60+ degrees: No outdoor clothing needed
- 50-59 degrees: Spring-type jacket or sweatshirt, long pants
- 40-49 degrees: Jacket, long pants, close-toed shoes
- 1-39 degrees: Winter coat, gloves, hat, snow pants, boots
- Below zero: Indoor Recess
If a child arrives at school without the necessary items, such as a coat, hat, gloves, snow pants, or boots, we will do our best to provide them with what they need. However, our supply of extra winter gear is limited, and we may not always have the right size or item available.
In the event that your child is missing critical winter clothing, we will first try to find them something suitable from our lost and found or extra supplies. If we are unable to do so, we may need to call you to bring the necessary items to school. This is to ensure your child's safety and comfort during outdoor recess.
I understand that acquiring all the required winter gear can be a financial burden for some families. If you are in need of assistance, please don't hesitate to reach out to the school. We have resources available to help provide winter clothing for students who need it.
Thank you for your attention to these important winter weather details. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
Counseling Corner
Northview’s character trait for the month of November is Gratitude. Students will learn what it means to be thankful for all different aspects of our lives by practicing having an Attitude of Gratitude! Students are learning that staying in the present moment and focusing on gratitude practices is a great way to regulate our emotions and maintain a positive outlook on life and learning. Students have been enjoying participating in daily gratitude challenges!
Additionally, to help us develop our gratitude muscle, all students at Northview were invited to complete an optional activity that highlights the veterans in their life. We had numerous students return the worksheet and they are hanging up around our building. It’s been really fun seeing all of the pictures and the information has sparked some great conversation. Thank you to all you veterans out there! We are grateful for you!
2nd Grade Spotlight!
Second graders have had a busy fall! So far this year the students have stepped into the roles of big kid writers and readers. In the first writing unit, they composed small moment stories that mattered to them, and they are currently working on writing nonfiction expert chapter books. In reading, too, they went from reading mostly narrative work and are now studying the work of nonfiction authors. In math, they are mastering addition and subtraction strategies, continuing to work on problem solving, and enjoying new learning with coins. In phonics, the students are learning how to tackle challenging words while also learning how animals face challenges in nature. Everyday we continue to build and strengthen our classroom communities and practice Northview’s 3B’s: Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Safe.
